Category 4 is a monthly broadcast concept from Michael Brunner [ @four4 ] for Great Circles Radio.

Each episode is broken into four segments, which are connected in some fashion, but routinely unique in many others. This allows for the drawing of comparisons between otherwise disparate concepts, while simultaneously creating enough creative restrictions to focus the musical selections.

The 21st episode comes to us from Philly-native synthesizer weirdo and DJ, Phil Yeah [ @philyeah ].

We invite our listeners to guess these categories during the show.
As an added incentive for participation, the first person to guess the categories during the broadcast will be eligible to win a prize. Each month brings new categories and prizes.

Category 4 w/ Phil Yeah - Episode 21: Collaborators

Allen Saei aka Aubrey is an essential pioneer from the UK scene. Being very present in the electronic music world for around 30 years already, Aubrey has released a ton of music and remixes in respected labels such as Metroplex, Sistrum, Basic Moves and of course ones of his own labels, Solid Groove.  Solid Groove Records has 30 vinyl releases over thirteen years and tracks were licensed by Derrick May, Terry Francis, Pete Tong, Adam X and Carl Cox. As well as Solid Groove, Aubrey ran four other labels - Textures, Dark, DOT, and Cheap Knob Gags.

This Techno mix will be printed on CD copies and sent to Latitude Records in Berlin for free distribution in the next few weeks.

Moiré is perhaps one of the most criminally underrated producers of recent times - yeah we said it. 

Around 2013 his music began to bubble within certain circles - weird, mutant off piste bass inspired music with nods to the likes of Basic Channel, tape culture and beyond. It was at times Dubby, at times Housey and at the same time never necessarily fit into any one place in particular. 

He was championed and supported by the likes of Actress and released EP's for Ninja Tune, Werk Discs, Rush Hour and many other prominent record labels.

However, in part to his mysterious persona, Moiré didn't go on to the rapturous heights expected of a musician so clearly and blatantly talented. Not one to 'play the game' so to speak Moiré was happy to let his music speak for himself without the bravado or 'bullsh*t' which often comes with an industry which revels in hype.

Instead, quietly behind the scenes, he continued to hone his craft releasing a number of records and albums on the likes of Ghostly International, Hypercolour and Spectral Sound.

His most recent release came in the form of a new album for Avenue 66 - an exploratory journey through IDM inspired sounds based upon analog modulation and circuit loops - hence the title 'Circuits'.

It was an ambitious project for a producer keen to challenge his own limitations in his use and approach to hardware and instrumentation.

The result? A killer assortment of pensive, thought provoking electronic sounds that's all too easy to get lost in.

Anyway, we invited Moiré to record a mixtape for us, we should have really asked before.
