On Sunday early dawn to early evening, I explored two warehouse raves that started on Saturday night. I planned to stop by three raves but I only could do two.

Romanian Minimal (rominimal) producer, Petre Inspirescu's DJ set at Resolute at the ex Party Expo was mellow and dancy, some what less k-hole vibe than his own track, Racakadoom. Resolute’s sound system was warm and not too loud so it was less damaging for the hearing also it was just a better quality. (It rly doesn’t have to loud to have a good party) I enjoyed how the four corner sound system hugged around the dirty dusty graffitti filled dance floor. The sun light from the window above the dj deck felt like heaven, like Dune's sandy sun rise.

AKA Sol at Apollo pleasantly surprised me with  their confident, cocky and arrogant attitude, isolating bass then bringing the base back, and mixing, ugh they were the hot thang that made people dance at Apollo. It was incredibly cathartic to see them glow, and djing, dancing pretty intensely on the DJ deck. I also loved visiting the spot that I've never been before, it's such a hidden gem from the street. The drizzling grey sky was perfectly bright for the concrete front yard.

It was a pure joy to dance with other the dancers on the dance floor at both dance parties. Jaxx, Arron, Eleou and many more whom I didn't get to exchange names yet but beautiful souls, whom some of them might have been rolling and I might have been contact high as well.

Dancing for 8 hours was strenuous for my knees and I started to get extremely hungry around 5pm so even though I wanted to continue to dance and check Peter Fonda's party, at one point, looked at the people in the bright grey concrete front yard, with fresh air, I couldn't say good bye to the party people and walked away after thanking the door person and the security.

My mixes tend to be an homage to the dancefloors I've experienced in the days/months leading up to recording. I think most DJs can relate to this. Whether I'm dancing or playing (or both!), I'm endlessly inspired by the energetic, cosmic flow of the room. I attempted to capture the rollercoaster of emotions attributed to the floors and dancers I've recently encountered. It's a callback to these incredibly present moments. Also, always eat your fruits and vegetables. :)

Good morning, good evening, good new year. Moods is starting 2019 with Anne Lacy, an archangelic operator of NYC's techno scene. Lacy's mix is a ki to the ki—or, the music they blast on the aux cord in the Uber on the way to the party.

Lacy grew up primarily in the Bay Area—which immediately helps parallel and tie their dedication to hip hop, R&B, and rap. "All of the classics were in constant rotation around me - on the radio, in my friends cars, at the mall, at school dances - I was fully immersed in it," they note. "In my teens, my sister and I started taking hip-hop classes in Oakland taught by a dude who was choreographing and dancing for Aaliyah and Usher at the time. His classes opened a lot of doors to this music for me, as well."

Taking "Hot Boyz" by Missy Elliot, for example, helps ground Lacy's love for the queen. "[It's] a huge one for me. I mean, any track produced by Timbaland at that time was. I’m not sure the first time I heard this track for sure, but I assume it was either in my older sister’s (Sarah) bedroom or in her car. Sarah was such a huge part of my musical discoveries and learnings. They were constantly taking me on adventures into San Francisco in her car—a massive CD book filled to the brim with mix CDs of this shit always in toe. Missy was doing something not a lot of womxn were getting shine for at that time, and I was perpetually in awe of it."

A shift to punk and across the country to Chicago (then to NYC) led Lacy on their path to noise, house, then techno. "I spent a good chunk of my 20s doing vocals in two different bands, which is where I eventually found noise music. I was living in spaces throwing shows, which eventually was a mishmash of punk music and noise music. Noise was definitely my segue to grungier-sounding techno.

"But by proxy of living in Chicago, my first love in dance music was for house music, and from house I found a home in techno years later. My roots in hip hop, rap, and R&B definitely drew me to the percussive and rhythmic elements of house music. It felt familiar and warm."

And last words? "We’re in this scene together—not separately. Make space, learn from one another, admit and apologize for your wrongdoings, grow, and share all that you’ve got. Less ego, more community. Less hypocrisy, more action."

LASTLY

Lacy's mix is paired with Sarah Lucas—a foundational queer British artist who's been working since the 80s. I saw her work at the New Museum during her retrospective and it blew me away—not only does she deal with gender, she breaks it. 

This detail of a car seat she's fitted perfectly with cigarette butts fits perfectly with Lacy's concept of the mix being the tunes you listen to as you ki to the ki. I think it's a perfect fit.

Greem is a NY-based artist who creates dance floor oriented techno/house sets. Born in Seoul, South Korea, Greem’s DJ sets focus on tension and release, whimsical noises, machine sound, heavy kicks, simmering atmosphere, rumbling sub, hypnotic minimal-melody, and repetitive simple bass lines. As a dancer, screamer, singer, DJ, collaborator, producer, Greem delivers sound that makes people move their butts, speak to their hearts, minds and souls.
