This lecture discusses the 20th century poet, novelist, and philosopher, Rainer Maria Rilke's work Letters to a Young Poet, and examines in particular his diagnoses of superficiality and sterility coming from a reliance upon conventions and a conventional way of life.  This can be an issue even for those who aim to avoid or escape conventions, as they fall into yet another set of conventions.
