Boy, so cool! Can't hold it - did you write songs for the new Martin L. Gore album?!?! Fresh with a good bite! Though I missed the track 6 mnth ago somehow, I listen it now and count it came before his Mandrill (which I like so very much). And today MG releases Howler. One day they will give a name for this touching, creative genre of IDM Electronica fusion that Justin, Martin, and I should say, our man @belial-pelegrim also preach. And you gents will be pioneers of it. This is good sht! Fresh and very good! <3

This song was written by Steve on the acoustic guitar. He passed it along to Ken, who added a sturdy rhythm acoustic guitar, as well as his always solid, dynamic drums to it. In short order, Ken got the rest of the Eclectic Collective together on it, starting with Josh, who added his five string fretless bass to complete the rhythm section. Next up was JJ, who's keys, both organ and piano, can be heard livening the whole thing up. Then came Tez with his fiery ripping guitar fills.

We were all blown away, though, when Stephen added his equally ripping guitar fills as responses to Tez's parts. It really sounds like the two maestros are having a conversation. Not to be outdone, Chris sprinkled some of his magical guitar to fill in the spaces, mostly at the beginning.

Of course, we needed a competent producer to pull the whole thing together for us, especially with all the different voices in the stew. That person was Stephen, who was able to wrangle all of us and make it sound coherent, like the expert producer he is.

We all really enjoy working on Steve's songs, although it's been a few months since we did one together. It's been proven many times before that if,you start out with something good, and you end up with some thing great. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed making it.

So… I was pondering my current mindset, and I noticed it sounded something like: “Holy flaming shitballs of impending fiery doom!! Is this it? Are these the end-times? And are they just more pea-brained and tedious than Hollywood promised? Please stop the planet. I’d like to get off here.”

A lot has unfolded in just the last six months. I'm pretty sure Australia burned down. The world has become embroiled in a pandemic (And the US is firmly ranked #1, so… MAGA?). Major earthquakes have been reported in Mexico, and the states surrounding Yellowstone (isn’t that super). Umm.... Murder Hornets (because Huggy Hornets didn't seem appropriate to this year's theme).  Humans have once again proven they will always stand up for equality, and opportunity… despite any antiquated and fear-based structure that stands in their way (who could have imagined?). Current leadership has finally confirmed the value of those human lives (considering inflation, it wasn't as high as I'd hoped). Oh, and bleach is now a health drink (although you’re gonna want a mixer).

It was probably around day twenty seven, hiding under the stairs in the basement, that I had to stop and ask myself, “I wonder if the Sun’s still there, or if it got fed up with our crap, and left.” (Good news folks. It’s still there. It’s also shockingly green and beautiful outside, so the pollution may have actually gotten fed up, and left.)

So for this one, I’m going full Star Trek analogy, because it’s one I’m sure almost everyone will remember… The concept of ’Shields Up’. 

Even in the earliest episodes, whether the attack was imminent or hidden, ’Shields Up!’ was always the first command. It’s purely a defensive move, and it’s fascinating to study the cinematically-defined rules created to support that idea. Sure, the ship becomes impervious to attacks. But its landing bays are also closed off from receiving allied resources during that time. Most intriguingly, the shield can only be maintained for so long. It is always draining the ship’s resources. So essentially, the shield is unbiased as to who or what it keeps out, and the ship’s resources drain rapidly with each passing moment. It is a very temporary situation, meant to be used sparingly.

In this analogy, I suspect our egos are the ship (I’ll let you decide if your ego is also the captain), and our fear and anger are our shields. And in similar fashion, nothing good can get in when those shields are up. And they are a constant drain on our energy reserves. Everything about the nature of anger and fear suggests we can’t sustain that level of energy output indefinitely. And yet we insist on keeping those shields up.

Going turbo-nerd now, what if this is the equivalent of the Kobayashi Maru (a no-win scenario). What if we are intended to creatively think our way out of this situation, and the answer doesn’t lie in using fear or anger. What if being open to the negative is as important as being open to the positive. And learning to flow with the negative leads to a more well rounded crew, better capable of handling challenges in the future.

Maybe, just maybe, we are meant to have the shields down right now. Maybe we’re meant to be experiencing the brunt of this, full force; in order to come out the other side that much more capable, and that much more respectful of the experience. Either way, I know when my shields are up, I feel physically drained; and when my shields are down, I can feel myself being rejuvenated. And I really believe something profound is happening there. Just something to geek out over.

MESSAGE TO MY SC FRIENDS: I regret to admit, the Soundcloud bugs have grown too tedious for me… and it’s now effecting my mood and my creative energy. But there are a lot of you out there still putting forth the effort; and I realized (on my 5th write-up attempt)… I need to stop complaining about the details, and just accept that the tool is no longer working for me in the capacity I wanted it to (and that I greatly admire those of you who have the wisdom/patience to look past that).

Honestly, one of the main reasons I chose SC was the ability to connect with you, and support and celebrate your new songs as well. I can’t do that effectively anymore. And speaking from the heart (with a definite bias coming from my autistic wiring)… it feels insincere and wrong to me, to keep uploading my music here, if I can’t support your music as well. 

So long story short, as much as this sucks, I decided to cancel my subscription (which ends on June 29th). The way the world is going, my time (and money) need to go toward things that promote happiness. Clearly… buggy software does not. o.o

If SC miraculously gets these bugs sorted out by then, I will happily reactivate my subscription. If they don’t, the solo works will need to be deleted a few days before June 29th, to ensure there is room for all the collabs (I don’t want my collab partners to suffer any losses, because of my choice). 

Before that happens, I urge you to grab free downloads of anything you want. Please help yourselves to copy/pastes of any liner notes you enjoyed as well. And I will also mention, all my current and future works will still be found on Bandcamp (original liner notes included in each song description). Those are truly the best versions of the songs anyway (finalized for the albums), and they will remain free to download there as well.
