Weirdo

I strained my wrist playing guitar while practicing a new piece I hope to post in a month or two. For us guitarists, holding a large stretch (in this case a 5 fret stretch on the third fret) for periods of time can cause problems! (Guitar players nodding their heads right now 😊). Anyhoo, I can’t play my guitar at the moment, so I decided to freshen up a short piece I had on SC from a few years ago. It’s very simple, a musical meditation, towards peace; the dove of peace carries this message, through many cultures and religions. Peace is needed now, more than ever. Hope you may spend 2 minutes with me to meditate. 
PS. Wasn't able to master this with clarity, so headphones/earphones best.

In recent years I have the habit of converting poems into songs and here is one of them which is based on “Alone” by Edgar Allan Poe.  It was said that this poem was never published in his lifetime.  I think I first shared this song here about four years ago.  In this version, I enhanced the backing music and did the vocals all over again.

Autumn Tint of Gold

Hey…. So I put down the slide guitar the other day, and picked up the mandolin after a slide solo wasn’t working. Then did this little song. A rather surreal look at the metaphysics of stars as they relate to us. Occasionally, we are at a loss to make sense of this life. I find perspective in observing the night sky, among other things, even if for only a brief moment. Hanging out with others helps too. So does playing music. I usually laugh at myself in those moments and realize just how fascinating life can be. I mentioned this story before, but in a different context. I have been ‘caretaking’ a fire ant colony for over twenty years. The common sense of today’s world would seek to destroy the colony, as labeling them as ‘nuisance pests’ comes with a dire consequence for the ants. Fire ants bite only to get a grip and then sting (from the abdomen) and inject a toxic alkaloid venom called solenopsin. Anyway, the colony had been in my neighbor’s yard decades ago, and I did my best to encourage him not to destroy the colony. But after seeing a friend of his riding over the colony with a riding lawn mower, I knew the colony was doomed if it stayed there. Then one day, while emptying the kitchen compost bucket into the compost pile, I saw a long trail of fire ants coming from my neighbor’s yard into mine. They had begun to build a mound near a brush pile in the back. So the ants have been here for 5 years or so. Sure, they may strip an aspen sapling bare, or try and sneak into my vegetable garden, but for the most part, they have been good neighbors. They have come out of their mound now that it is a little warmer. I was cleaning up the gardens in the back, and noticed hundreds of them working on their mound. I looked yesterday and I saw this one ant carrying a large twig, way bigger than him, on top of the mound. As he walked, the twig was waving back and forth like a sword raised in the air. I laughed (to myself) and realized it had been a while since I had done so. This song is about all those little things in life, like that, that bring us back…. Hope you like it. The Eclectic Collective – composition

This song began with Josh coming up with the fonky-ass bass line and sharing it with everyone else. First up to bat was Ken, of course, who really matched the idea I had for the bass perfectly and gave it some flavor, too. Once we had a rhythm section solidified, Tez jumped in with the Kruangbin inspired arpeggios, and really gave the whole thing the flavor that it ended up with. Scotty followed soon after with his melodic/rhythmic leads that match his awesome vocal melodies. Next up was Stephen, who laid in the fiery solo towards the end, as well as some really trippy e-bowed guitar throughout. Then JJ came along and lit it up with his electric piano and synth. Finally, Chris came forward and added the distinct, exciting guitar intro. 
  Of course, we needed someone to produce and mix it, so we asked Tez to handle this one, which he did with his usual high wizardly magic. It is very gratifying to all of us to have Chris back in the mix on this one, as well as some upcoming releases, as well. This was the first time any of us has collaborated with Scotty, and we are thrilled that we finally got a chance. He's a creative, driven, and very agreeable musical partner, who's willing to work with us until we all get it right. We all hope this is just the first of many with him involved. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed making it.

Music for Danse Etoile Ballet (www.danseetoile.org) who will be performing Frida's Wings, a ballet based on the life and works of Frida Kahlo, June 2024 in Colorado.
Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter known for her many portraits, self portraits and works inspired by the nature and artifacts of Mexico.  Her paintings often had strong autobiographical elements and mixed realism with fantasy. She is also known for painting about her experience of chronic pain. In most of her self-portraits, she depicts her face as mask-like, but surrounded by visual cues which allow the viewer to decipher deeper meanings. Aztec mythology features heavily in Kahlo's paintings in symbols including skeletons and skulls.  In the painting, Dream of The Bed, painted in the year of 1940, Frida expressed her feeling and interception of death, which depicts a skeleton on the canopy of her bed (as she had in her real life). Her husband, Diego Rivera called the Juda, Frida's lover, but Frida said it's just an amusing reminder of people's mortality. Frida Kahlo spent much of her life in pain.  As As a teenager she suffered a horrific bus accident which left her unable to have children and meant she needed more than 30 operations on her spine. Eventually her withered leg had to be amputated and she died at 47. She said in her diary: “Feet, why do I need you, if I have wings to fly”

Greetings my friends, and welcome to the second installment of ‘Musical Adventures with Carlos Vivanco’. :D

Carlos (https://soundcloud.com/carlosvivanco-1, https://carlosvivanco1.bandcamp.com) and I have been friends for a few years now. We met here in SC, and made a solid connection in Eddie’s ‘Anything Goes’ chatroom back in 2017 (and we’ve continued that fine tradition for almost as long as I’ve been a part of the SC community). I’m happy to say, it’s been one of my greatest sources of creative energy, visiting with the fine musicians Eddie brought together; having the amazing opportunity to learn from them.

If you know Carlos, then you know his music is on another level. To me… hearing his creations is like experiencing music, art, math and spirituality; all coming together in perfect harmony. He is profoundly talented, and profoundly generous with those talents. And every time I finish a project with him, I feel like my musical mind has been expanded by another giant leap.

Now I know the majority of you are already very familiar and very practiced with music theory. But I’m still in the early stages of learning. I kinda have the major keys down (still haven’t figured out chords); I’m starting to learn more about the minor keys. And thanks to Carlos, I’m now venturing into time signatures beyond 3/4, 4/4 or 5/4 structure. Our first collaboration was 10/8. This one’s 7/8; it’s also in A Minor (A C D# E G). And I am excited beyond words to finally understand these subtleties a little better.

As a newcomer, what I really dig about music theory are the various different ways to count out a melody. In the case of this song (again, for those who might not already know this), Carlos taught me to think in terms of 1231212, with emphasis on the 1s. Since I tend to draw in my notes (DAW Legos) when working on something this complex, it was wonderfully surprising to realize I could place those notes on the 1s (or alternately, I could create counter melodies on the 2s and 3s), and then explore different sounding instruments. And when I found that ideal instrument, all the elements just snapped together like perfectly fitting jigsaw pieces. That is so cool!

Now I’m sure some of you music theory masters are getting a good chuckle over my enthusiasm, but I’m feeling a bit like a kid in a musical candy store right now. So I want to offer up a huge thanks to Carlos, for having the kindness and patience to work with me on these concepts. You are helping me expand my understanding, one creation at a time... and I am eternally grateful to you for giving me this opportunity. It’s always a pleasure working with you, my dear friend. :)

MESSAGE TO MY SC FRIENDS: I regret to admit, the Soundcloud bugs are such a frequent occurrence now, it’s impacting my mood and creative energy; and I need to stop using it. But there are a lot of you out there still putting forth the effort (and I greatly admire you for having the patience), so I also need to stop openly complaining about it.

So long story short, as much as this sucks, I decided to cancel my subscription (which ends on June 29th). If SC gets these bugs sorted out by then, I will happily reactivate my subscription. If they don’t, the solo works will need to be deleted a few days before June 29th, to ensure there is room for all the collabs (I don’t want my collab partners to suffer any losses, because of my choice). 

Before that happens, I urge you to grab free downloads of anything you want. Please help yourselves to copy/pastes of any liner notes you enjoyed as well. And I will also mention, all my current and future works will still be found on Bandcamp (original liner notes included in each song description). Those are truly the best versions of the songs anyway (finalized for the albums), and they will remain free to download there as well.
