As they prepare to release the project on 7" for the first time, we're extremely honoured to get our hands on a never-before-heard mixtape by the master himself. Made some time between mid-1999 and early 2000, it's a fly-on-the-wall showing of what Jay Dee had blaring out of his speakers while on the sofa or by the MPC.

If you’re familiar with the Boogie/Funk scene, you’ve definitely came across the name “Nick Martinelli” in the credits somewhere; whether as a producer (solo or with his acolyte David Todd), as arranger, writer, mixing board or remix duties. He has contributed some of the most notable song within the genre, songs such as Loose Ends “Hangin’ On A String”, Fat Larry’s Band “Act Like You Know”, or 52nd Street “Tell Me How It Feels”, but his catalog’s range is quite exhaustive, diverse and lots of his catalogue is kind of “slept-on”. We’re talking about a superstar producer, who has hits on both the U.S. and U.K. charts, and at the same time has an abundance of underground boogie/disco classic anthems. 

With that in mind, I wanted to pay homage to him, so I decided to do a tribute mix with some of my records that had the name Nick Martinelli on them. (I could easily do 3 more).

FMO Funk is a weekly mix series hosted by @Kirollus celebrating the sound of boogie and 80's funk.

We're very pleased to have Austin, Texas born and raised DJ & producer Danbone for this week's show. Dan is best known for his work with the modern funk label Austin Boogie Crew (ABC) and more recently  as founder of Funky Crates, a platform that hosts live vinyl sets from different DJs around the globe.

Danbone runs Austin’s edition of the @austinboogiecrew's night, 'The Boogie' with fellow members Chicken George and Chorizo Funk and alongside modern funk & boogie he incorporates jazz fusion, Brazilian jazz, reggae and even some Library/AOR sounds into his mixes. His appreciation for jazz funk is very evident here with plenty of early 80's fusion as well as fresh new releases from 2020.
