Resident Advisor is wrapping up 2024 with an episode dedicated solely to vinyl culture, from dubplate production to record store culture, all-vinyl DJing and running labels that release records. 

In the first part of this episode, which was recorded live at Wire Festival, panelists and vinyl DJs Mary Yuzovskaya, Clarisa Kimskii and Devoye Folkes discuss the benefits and drawbacks of playing records in the digital era. According to the panelists, playing vinyl could be seen as a skill analogous to driving stick shift: while it's not always necessary, it gives new artists a better understanding of a DJ set's underlying machinery. They also talk about how a DJ's identity used to be intertwined with their personal collection of records, and how the digital paradigm shift presents today's DJs with infinite choices. 

The Exchange's second half takes listeners behind the scenes, investigating the challenges and opportunities inherent in running a business based on vinyl sales. Live from Wall to Wall Festival at RSO, HHV Records, Bandcamp Berlin, Objects Manufacturing and Elevate Record Store speak to the overhead investment, production time and ecological considerations they take into account in their day-to-day operations. They also shed light on the statistics behind the enormous sales of vinyl records in the past few years and the breakdown of which artists are making money from digital versus physical music sales and why. His San Francisco apartment is a vinyl jungle, a testament to his dedication to the craft. Introduced to us through our friend and past collaborator John Kimble, we stumbled upon his five-year archive of 60+ mixes on SoundCloud—an instant sign that he was a perfect fit for Spellbound.

Now, he's back for the 6th edition of our Bloop set, delivering an all-vinyl session that showcases his signature style. Expect rolling grooves, hypnotic vocals, and infectious rhythms that make it impossible to stand still. A deep dive into Patrick’s world of sound, where every record is chosen with intention. Originally from LA, John grew up in the underground warehouse party scene in Seattle in the early 90's. A drummer and an avid fan of all things musical with early influences by the rhythm sections of classic rock, hip hop, ska, industrial, avant garde, the west coast dance music sounds of Jeno, Garth and the Wicked crew. Drawing inspiration from the early Uk tech house pioneers and a member of LA's The Coastal Commision and ex vinyl peddler from Beat non Stop,  John Kimble started playing and collecting records in 1994 and remains faithful to the  craft of long seamless mixes to create a unique sound and a hypnotic listening experience.

Gryphn’s Dj career started in London during the first electro  wave of the early 80’s , playing in underground clubs while also hosting his own weekly , Club Boy .Also responsible for compiling weekly underground dance floor charts for New Musical Express , a weekly international music publication.He later moved into a more avant-garde mixing at the birth of the Industrial scene at  the notorious Iron Orchid club, while also being head of promotions  at Recommended Records.At the birth of House music he finally found a long time home as it summarised his entire history of deep listening.To this day Gryphn has not stop playing vinyl . Often searching out vinyl only releases , white labels , unknown artist releases.He is a true digger and an interesting selector.
