Born in Taiwan in 1948, in a tumultuous and revolutionary period in China, Lily Chao struggled in her early life. Her distinctive vocal talents were a way to raise herself and her family from poverty, as she recorded Chinese folk songs, and western style garage and surf rock music. 

Her conflicting feelings toward her chosen career and her chaotic personal life was well known, and her thinly veiled melancholy – while adding a certain depth to her performances – earned her the unkind nickname "Ice Queen" among Chinese music fans.
