About SPAZA:
Conceived in the Mushroom Hour lab, SPAZA is a band with no permanent personnel, with each line-up assembled for the express purpose of recording completely improvised or workshopped material. For this, the initial salvo, SPAZA was put together from a group of musicians with individual and collective links to Johannesburg’s jazz, afro funk and experimental electro scenes, namely Siya Makuzeni (vocals, trombone & FX), Nosisi Nokukhanya Ngakane (vocals & FX), Waldo Luc Alexander (electric violin & FX pedals), Gontse Jnsq Makhene (percussion & vocals), Ariel Zamonsky (upright bass) and João Renato Orecchia Zúñiga (synthesizers & electronics).

48 heures avant sa sortie, le premier album d’un tourneboulant binôme sud-africain se dévoile en partie sur Le Grigri. Dernière trouvaille du label qui a fait découvrir Sibusile Xaba ou Thabang Tabane au monde entier, Dumama + Kechou s’imposent comme les nouveaux prophètes de la “Nomadic Future Folk”.

Il y a des oeuvres comme ça qui n’ont pas besoin de beaucoup de temps pour vous accrocher. Buffering Juju appartient à cette catégorie: dès la première écoute, on a senti qu’on tenait là un grand disque aussi moderne qu’intemporel. Il faut dire qu’on partait en terrain quasi conquis. Car ce premier album de la paire Dumama (Gugulethu Duma) et Kechou (Kerim Melik Becker), on le doit au label de Johannesburg, Mushroom Hour Half Hour. Celui-là même qui a fait connaître au monde entier deux nouveaux hérauts de la folk-jazz sud-africaine, deux voix magnétiques, deux habitués des ondes du Grigri, Sibusile Xaba et Thabang Tabane. 

Alliance entre une chanteuse-joueuse d’uhadi et un multi-instrumentiste capable de jongler entre guitare, synthés, guembri ou darbouka, Dumama + Kechou a imaginé son premier album comme une véritable histoire au long cours, celle d’une femme qui sort de prison. Sur sa route, de nombreux souvenirs lui reviennent, des rencontres se font, des transformations se mijotent. Sorte de parcours initiatique, onirique et fantastique, Buffering Juju impressionne par sa folk futuriste qui marie à merveille les instruments traditionnels xhosa et des textures proches du hip-hop. 

Pour Le Grigri et rien que pour Le Grigri, le duo a accepté de révéler, 48 heures avant sa sortie officielle, l’un des plus beaux extraits de ce disque fascinant. Sur “Wessi Walking Mama”, on retrouve un autre pilier de l’avant-garde sud-africaine, Siya Makuzeni du groupe Spaza. L’un des nombreux invités d’un disque bien habité dans tous les sens du terme puisqu’on y retrouve aussi la très free et spiritual clarinettiste de Chicago, Angel Bat Dawid. Pour le reste de ce bijou made in South Africa, il faudra patienter jusqu’au 20 mars. D’ici là, vous pourrez écouter “Wessi Walking Mama” environ 480 fois - oui, on a calculé, on est confinés.
