Jason Richardson is a Leeton-based musician and poet who’s collaborated with Naviar many times over the last few years: in 2014 his music was part of the sound installation we made for the State of Origin exhibition in London. In 2017, Jason and Marco from Naviar curated together the exhibition Crossing Streams in Narrandera. In 2021, Marco interviewed Jason as part of our series of online events, Naviar Virtual. discerning ear - Naviarhaiku 562

The Assignment: Bury a secret sound until it is no longer identifiable.

This project was proposed by Mahlen Morris.

Step 1: Record a 30-second chunk of sound from a single source. This may or may not involve a microphone. This recording shall be referred to as The Sound.

Step 2: Manipulate the Sound extensively. Stretch, break, torture, soothe, remove, heighten The Sound. Reveal subtleties of The Sound you didn’t notice when you recorded it.

Step 3: Layer the results of Step 2 in a way that pleases you. Revel in it.

Step 4: Reveal to no one the original source of The Sound. Ever. In the description when posting your finished track, you can say what you did to The Sound, but do not even hint at the source.

Step 5: Keep and carry that secret. Not all must be revealed.

Darren Bourne’s surreal poem came to life while he was making AI video experiments based on Salvador Dalí’s Metamorphosis of Narcissus.

"According to expert Jane Reichhold, the hai of haiku means “joke, or fun, or unusual”, which is part of the inspiration behind the name halF unusuaL, the experimental electronic music project of Darren Bourne, who also writes haiku and has been published by the British Haiku Society."

Goofy Driver

ここには一度きたことがある
地底に広がる大工場
溶けた鉄を砂型にそそぐ
コークスで真っ黒の男女
砂型の湯口が崩れ
燐のにおいが立ち込める
火炎がうねり
火の粉が爆ぜるキューポラ
おまえは深淵の縁に立ち
地底に呼びかける
「ヤッホー」
その影がトンネルの壁に映り
影絵のようにうつくしい

I feel like that I had once come to this place.
A big foundry in the bottom of the abyss.
Men and women dirty with cokes pours the melted iron into the sand molds.
The sprues of the sand molds collapse.
The smell of phosphorus spreads.
The cupola furnace emits fire.
Sparks leap.
She stands at the edge of the abyss and looks down at the bottom.
She calls to the factory persons working in the bottom. "yoo-hoo!".
Her shadow falls on the wall of the tunnel.
It is beautiful like a shadow picture.
