Disquiet Junto Project 0608: Nature-to-Text 
The Assignment: Using a speech-to-text tool, turn a field recording into instructions for a composition.

This project is perhaps more experimental than ordinary, simply because it may not work for everyone. Apologies in advance. As someone, I think Brian Eno, once said, “It’s only experimental music if there’s a chance it can fail.”

Step 1: When one uses speech-to-text tools, such as those now commonly included in word processing software, often those tools will mistakenly interpret ordinary, non-verbal sound as garbled words, or otherwise try to characterize the sound, such as with bracketed phrases like “[deep breath]” or “[background chatter].” One potential way to achieve the result is to upload the audio to YouTube and then apply automated captions. Check out your options. There is likely to be discussion of this topic on places where the Junto occurs, such as the llllllll.co BBS and the Junto Slack.

Step 2: Record some non-verbal audio, perhaps a field recording of the sound on the street, or down a hallway. It’s recommended to do the recording somewhere where there is likely to be variation.

Step 3: Submit a segment of the audio to a speech-to-text tool. Or perhaps multiple tools, to see the results.

Step 4: Assuming Step 3 yields a series of descriptions, then compose a piece of music that treats that sequence as a kind of score. That is, make music that achieves the result described by the speech-to-text tool’s results. Perhaps you could use someone else’s. Here, for example, is a sequence that I ended up with recently: “[ambient noise] [ambient noise] [indistinct chatter] [indistinct chatter] [background noise] [indistinct chatter] [ambient noise].”

OK, so this strays a little from the junto brief, but this is where things led!

My field recording ended up being a noodling around on a SW radio dial, avoiding actual voices as much as possible ... The  resulting recording went through (iZotope RX) speech-to-text, which created the crazy text copied below.  That text then became the basis for the (Google) AI 'vocal', which inspired the final track ... a kind of bendy AI rap ... The SW radio recording is still in there somewhere as well ...

Here's the transcription of what the speech-to-text 'heard' - follow along! The track goes through the complete text twice:

Prompted by the mention of Youtube, I looked at a few of my videos of a few years ago, concentrating on soundscapes & musique concrète. For most captions were unavailable but, quite strangely & randomly, one came up with the following word sequence: 'hai hai ya Aku nggak Tahu hai', which turned out to be in Malay &, not counting the repetitions of 'hai', means: 'Hi, I don't know' (according to Google Translate). Strangely again, when I revisited the video the captions had disappeared.
Anyway, I recorded this word sequence a few times & after applying numerous repetitions & effects, this track was the result.

Random Ignorance (disquiet0608)

I tried out various online tools to convert different field recordings into text and ended up using https://editor.flixier.com/transcribe/ - because it was the only one that worked on any of the recordings. I also tried audio > video > YouTube but YouTube failed to caption the videos.

I used an echoey recording of a recent visit to a cathedral which translated into nonsensical text (in German) but unfortunately no descriptions like [noise] or the like. I did not find a way to read a score or musical instruction into the text so I used text to speech - including the time stamps to translate the text back into audio. Because it is a rainy day, I turned this into a house track, sort of.

It’s too hot outside, and I’m lazy. So I let AI do all the work, extracting captions from a field recording, then feeding the captions back into an AI to make some music. 

I started with a short field recording while walking through Munich, Germany, and had MacWhisper (https://goodsnooze.gumroad.com/l/macwhisper) extract the captions. Here’s what it came up with: 

[Music] I think that's the most important thing that I've ever seen. That's everything. That makes me think it's too difficult. I'm in love with it.

Next step: Feeding the sentences into the TextToSample app (https://samplab.com/text-to-sample), an AI which can generate music from text prompts. The results were then stitched together - and that’s. 

What I really liked (and what mirrors my observations with AI in 2023 in general), is that both programs were completely overwhelmed with their tasks. Both results have nothing to do with the input - and that’s where things becomes interesting. As AI will mature, the technology will get streamlined and made less prone to errors, chance, and glitches. For me, now is the Golden Age of AI, as it’s clearly not working as it’s expected. I’m planning to make more samples with AI as long as they are „bad“, „faulty“, and „crappy“, and use these bits to let my creative juices flow.
