Here is the introductory mini-guide (or as they say ‘special’) to the film music of the iconic Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu (武満 徹, 1930-1996).

Takemitsu’s soundtracks are as plentiful as his vast catalogue of orchestral and chamber music, so many hours would be required to make it justice. Instead of being exhaustive, chronological or stylistically homogenous this audio-primer is focused on showcasing Takemitsu’s gift of compositional versatility. Be it jazz, Japanese traditional music, postserialism, symphonic grandeur or drone music I tried to include all of this composer’s aesthetical facets.

In order to render this eclecticism in a coherent way I’ve chosen the method of ‘audio-tapestry’ or sound collage.  Extensive details on the particular works that have been selected as well as very long tracklist are featured at the link below. I hope this mini-guide will spark some listener’s interest for a deeper exploration on their own time.
