Handstitched* is happy to announce a new split-artist EP (hs53) is by two consistent artists and friends of Handstitched* - Darren Harper & Ümlaut, both well-known and respected within musical spheres and both have released music on an amazing array of well-respected labels over the years.

Darren Harper - "Generational Drift - A seasonal reflection in four movements" wanders through a tactile and circular movement of explorations and minimalistic patterns of generative structures, each arrangement allows itself to occupy its own space within the theme, and variations evolve with harmonious and unrestricted woven textures, subtly offering an openness and tranquillity. "Generational Drift" is a long-form piece that is a sonic tapestry of evolving beauty and internal perceptions.

Ümlaut - "The Celestial Sphere" in contrast to Darren Harpers' work is fractured, short-formed pieces adjoining each other with a disjointed tension, sometimes off-kilter but always focused with a thought-provoking structure. Ümlaut navigates his way through contrasting and conflicting elements and carries the listener through a maze of articulations and random jazz-infused electronic segments, choosing to avoiding traditional form and creating something uniquely dynamic and engaging, all wrapped-up inside a sonic cosmos.

Issued on dual-format, limited edition tape and mini double CD featuring individually hand-bound and hand-cut collage CD wallets made from vintage materials and papers, a special print edition of five x ten designs for the [tape] O-cards to house the c45 cassettes. Each CD copy is hand-numbered and packed inside glassine bags, tape copies are packed inside a clear eco bag.

Almost 5 years to the day since his Bricolage debut, "Imitation of Faith", the prolific Belial Pelegrim returns with his latest musical escapade, "The Astronaut's Last Polaroid", and t's a very special one indeed.

This album tells the story of Jack Hawthorne. A 68 year old former NASA astronaut that is now grappling with the onset of Alzheimer's disease. Once celebrated for his groundbreaking lunar missions, Jack now finds himself lost in the uncharted territory of his fading mind.

Alzheimer's disease is a subject that is no doubt close to the hearts of a lot of people and it's a subject that Belial has carefully mapped out with the utmost respect.

The music itself is 15 tracks of lucid and harmonic experimental soundscapes that set a transient stage for what feels like a dark yet beautiful dream. There's a tinge of anxiety laced throughout as you would expect with such a theme but it never becomes foreboding. It's more like giant swirls of memories and relics of the past that drift in and out of view.

Belial expertly maps out the journey through hypnagogic tones that resonate with the heart and mind. Fleeting glimpses of rhythmic patterns, flashes of brooding strings and sprinkles of melodic dust. Taking us on a trip through not only Jack's consciousness but also our own. The depth and emotion that burrows its way into each track is of grandiose proportions. At times it feels like we're witnessing a one man orchestra as we traverse through various realms of classical, glitch. ambient and electronica. A reverie of sonic tapestry.

"The Astronaut's Last Polaroid" serves as a woozy yet visceral reminder that time is not always on our side when it comes to memory but also that the mind is a beautiful place regardless.

A decade is a long pause… how the world has changed since…

Longtime friends and collaborators, iconic ambient composer William Basinski and sound artist/composer Richard Chartier return to LINE with 'Aurora Terminalis', their first new work together since 2015’s ‘Divertissement’ LP (Important Records, US).

From an unexpected sudden burst of sound jaggedly spiraling outward, the tumult fades and shockwaves slide into lulling haze of a melody. Background nuance—nearly imperceptible—and foreground romanticism ripple near each others’ edges. Then, rhythmic and liquid, an erratic drifting over a clouded void... an 'un-still' life... a slow tracing.

'Aurora Terminalis'… a fading gauzy signal for a finality.

Basinski and Chartier have previously released two collaborative works on LINE; Aurora Liminalis (2013) and Untitled 1-3 (2008, an expanded reissue of 'Untitled' originally on Spekk, Japan, 2004), as well as the archival Bandcamp exclusive 'Something from the Pink House' a live improvisation recorded in 2004.

William Basinski's archival album 'The Clocktower at the Beach (1979)' was released on LINE in 2023.

We begin this small tour around 1995. I am not able to sleep. With no immediate prospect of ending this bad infinity, I create a tower from my pillows and fashion my blankets into a cave. Soon enough I fall asleep; the structuring of this formerly empty and directionless time had pushed me towards its conclusion.

Now 2019, I acquire a Revox reel-to-reel tape machine. I record many hours of improvisations, sending sounds from my Max MSP patch directly onto tape loops. Covering up the erase head with some cardboard, I enjoy listening to melodies gradually fade away as new layers are burned on top. The sounds I use are constantly plundered and re-plundered from past work of mine, forever composting my own musical memories. I like how the tape adds an extra layer of haze to the already distant fragments.

Now early 2024, I am in a small community in the Australian outback. I constantly refresh my browser to see the water height at Diljin Hill, to work out whether the river would flood us 12 hours later. As the flood waters rise and we get cut off from the outside, I can’t help but conceive of another sense of time, of grand time.

An eternal rhythm constructed not by humans, but by the land and the skies above it.

A slowly shifting present that doesn’t necessarily offer deprivation, but rather more of the less. A sense of what is, rather than what could be.

An eternal time that doesn’t require a neat sign-off from a conversation.

But why must I rely on the computer to see our fate? Might it not be better to just look eastward and see if clouds are gathering above the catchment?

And in any case, why must I obsess over travelling 12 hours into the future?

In early 2020, as the world goes into a restless slumber, I start to conceive of this album. As did the floodwater, a natural force precipitates a lasting present. Gradually I plow through recordings from the year before in order to find material. My original plan is to make a long, single piece of slowly developing music, that might help bridge the listener across the empty span of a night. Gradually I start to favour smaller vignettes, each separate from the universe, with no clear antecedent or consequence. You can find signs of both on this album.

Does this change of plan weaken the ability to induce sleep?
Or is that what dreaming is?
The construction of some sort of overarching sensibility, or even meaning, from our mishmash of fleeing presences in our age of being?

I write this now from yet another time and place. I am trying my best to make sense of some notes I wrote about 8 months ago, which were themselves derived from a book by a well-known contemporary Korean/German philosopher. Perhaps, dear reader, you picked up this reference throughout my little ramble?

As they tend to do, my musical tastes and interests have changed considerably since I began this album. Yet I have enjoyed returning to it when it suited my mood. While tired or lacking energy it has been a warm blanket to guide me. As I look out my window now, the sky is grey and the wind is blowing leaves off the trees. Perhaps this might have formally been a trigger to open up this project folder.

There are still traces of this album in my newer work. It sits as a dream to my more current work; a lingering warmth while the moonlight has already died.

I am gradually getting better at falling asleep as well.

What’s that rustling outside my window?
Or is it a faded memory whispering to me?

It has been a long time since we last released a compilation – our previous one was back in 2020. For the 100th release of our label, we felt it was the perfect occasion to celebrate in great company! We invited many musicians who have collaborated with Dronarivm in the past to create joint tracks with an artist of their choice. The result is 24 uniquely diverse tracks that showcase the vast musical spectrum of the genre we generally call "Ambient."

We are proud to present Illuminations III, a compilation created as a heartfelt thank-you to everyone who has supported us over the years. This includes musicians, listeners, visual artists, photographers, designers, podcasters, reviewers, and everyone who has helped us grow and move forward.

Illuminations III features over two hours of outstanding music from leading ambient producers, and just like any true gift, it's completely free to download. Of course, if you wish, you can contribute any amount you find appropriate. All proceeds will go toward supporting and further developing our projects.

For those who prefer a physical format, the album is also available as a print-on-demand double CDr.

The spirit of this album is introspection, the ability to stop everything around for a few seconds and reflect.

The absence of a common good as humanity. I believe that the proliferation of neoliberal governments and supranational corporations has brought a suffocating work logic, where productivity is god and workers are sacrificed to this deity, leading to the hyper-individualization of the person, where others are seen as outsiders to be defeated.

We are no longer part of something larger but have become an end in ourselves.

I see the widespread apathy toward the suffering of others as a consequence of the exaltation of the self over the communal. Thinking about others, being empathetic, requires time — time I cannot dedicate if all I think about is myself.

Today, the social mandate is to reach an unattainable potential, creating a constant state of frustration in individuals.

This idea of "being your own brand" turns us into just another item on the market shelf, where our social relationships lose sight of belonging, empathy, and the common good.

Institutions no longer represent us; everything is regulated by this post-modern and neoliberal logic.

To dedicate time to others, without expecting anything in return, is an act of resistance today.

previews. Francisco Sonur - Random acts of kindness | ROHS!

Composed with shortwave, long wave and UHF and VLF field recordings in Burdujeni Sat, near Suceava, Romania during artistic residency at Zidul de Hartie. Special shout out to Dan Prodan, for the ancestral house and the apples. This excerpt is drawn from an iteration of the composition concept realized on the cusp of the Harvest Moon of 2025 in Poznan with additional spontaneous spectral audio and synthesizer which amounts to one full 69 minute piece which will be released by Akashic Records on Bandcamp some time next week after it is divided into smaller tracks. Enjoy the warp of our planet's space time continuum in the fun-house mirror of the ionosphere as bounced back through radio waves.
