Max Murray - Zweite Versuch Über Homo Sacer for alto flute, bass clarinet and percussion

Moonsay is a 20-minute musical composition created for a performance with five musicians and amplified clothes racks, in connection with a data analysis of systematic anti-migrant crimes in Germany.

Its premiere takes place as part of the performance “What If – What If – Between Archive and Departure” – a performative installation exploring the tensions between migrant memory culture and the search for utopian alternatives. The work will be presented at the Museum am Rothenbaum – Cultures and Arts of the World (MARKK) in Hamburg, as part of the Fluctoplasma Festival 2025, under the theme “Vision beyond the West.”

Photographer and composer Hang Su interweaves documentary images of arson attacks against migrant communities – archived in the project “Brandmuster” by Joel Schülin – with lunar photographs by Kurdish astrophotographer Darya Kawa.

In the interplay between construction and decay, intimate stories unfold – through sound performances, rituals, and diasporic myths. The moon functions as a visual memory of places where racialized and migrant bodies were exposed to threat, while simultaneously becoming a symbol of home, remembrance, and regenerative power.

Everyday objects such as clothes racks are transformed into sonic material, re-appropriated by five performers. In this way, a fragile yet resistant soundscape emerges—one that breaks with Western traditions and opens a space for critical reflection.

Bethany Younge is an American composer currently residing in Chicago, Illinois. She has received a Masters degree in Composition from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague in The Netherlands and a Bachelors degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Composition (along with a minor in TIMARA-Technology in Music And Related Arts). She has studied composition closely with Richard Barrett, Martijn Padding, Yannis Kyriakides, Peter Adriaansz, Lewis Nielson, and Seung-Ah Oh and attended master classes conducted by esteemed composers such as Helmut Lachenmann, David Lang, Rebecca Saunders, Richard Ayers, Helena Tulve, Gordon Mumma, Rand Steiger, Trevor Wishart, Kiaja Saariaho, and Chaya Czernowin.
