Indietronica artist Rodney Cromwell from Catford releases his new single ‘Opus Three’ via Happy Robots on 3rd February. It’s a floor-filling synth-driven dance number about disconnected lovers trying to conjure optimism as the world stands the brink of apocalypse.

Conceived as a love-letter to a lost synthesizer, ‘Opus Three’ is at it’s heart the simplest of dance numbers; a full-fat 120bpm beat, layered with a chunky Moog Opus 3 synth line, is overlaid with percussion and the primitive buzzing tones of a 1960’s pocket stylophone. Inspired by the haunting and surreal novel ‘Ice’ by Anna Kavan, the song is about two lovers on the brink of apocalypse, separated by distance, lost in time, trying to find positivity in a world where there is little. “Don’t let it be, catastrophe” repeats the chorus, trying to conjure optimism from somewhere.

The B-side ‘Perception Management’ is an atmospheric dystopian synth instrumental that might be described as as ‘post-truth pop’. The maxi single includes an extended dance mix produced by Rich Bennett with remixes from Dublin synthpop artist Circuit 3 and Happy Robots’ latest signing folktronica act, Field Glass.

‘Opus Three’ is taken from the forthcoming ‘Memory Box' album. The LP is a mixture of synthpop, hauntology, dreampop and European coldwave and releases on 18th March.  Using analogue synths, drum machines with minimal computer sequencing the LP conjures an organic, dream-like world, inspired as much by Alice in Wonderland and Franz Kafka as by its sonic influences such as Kraftwerk, The Cure, Polyrock and Stereolab, creating a distinctive and compelling world.

​Rodney Cromwell's debut LP 'Age of Anxiety' (2015) and 'Rodney's English Disco' EP (2018) garnered Rodney Cromwell coverage in amongst others Electronic Sound, NME, Huffington Post, Paste, Record Collector, BBC6 Music and RNE3 in Spain, for whom he recorded a live session. The debut album featured in scores of Best of Lists including Electronic Sound and The Electricity Club who named him ‘Most Promising New Act’. He has played lives shows with acts like Pram, Death & Vanilla, M!R!M, Rowetta and Steve Davis. In 2020, he performed as part of Damo Suzuki of Can’s backing band.

‘Memory Box,’ the lead single from the album, premiered in Post-Punk.com and was voted by fans into the Dandelion Radio Official Festive 50.  It has received coverage across the globe including national radio play in Japan, Finland and Spain and multiple spins on BBC 6 Music in the UK.

Alice Hubble has announced her new album Hexentanzplatz will be released on September 10th, 2021 via London-based electronic-pop label Happy Robots. Described as the work of ‘one lady at home with her enormous collection of synthesisers’, Alice Hubble mixes melancholic pop, layered vintage synths and elegant vocals, reminiscent of Ladytron, Jane Weaver and Goldfrapp. Her debut album Polarlichter was released in September 2019 to much critical acclaim. 

Lead single ‘My Dear Friend’ was inspired by the discovery of a collection of love letters written by Hubble’s mother to her father around the time that they first met. “My mother passed away when I was in my teens and these letters gave me a real insight into who she was as a person, her ‘newly in love’ giddiness jumping off the page,” she says. 

Her new album Hexentanzplatz, named after the German mountain steeped in magic and legend, translates literally to mean Witches’ Dance Floor. An apt title for an album that dances its way through themes of illusion, love, feminism and protest whilst maintaining glistening, 80’s synth-pop sensibilities. Whilst Hubble was driving around the Harz Mountains last summer, the song ‘Beautiful Madness’ by Michael Patrick Kelly was on regular radio rotation. She repeatedly misheard the lyrics, thinking Kelly was singing “Oh what a beautiful mountain”, a sentiment which had much more resonance given their surroundings. The misheard line made Hubble smile and became the basis of her new record’s title track. “Being an eternal optimist I felt the need to write something in 2020 that was full of hope and positivity,” she says. 

Hexentanzplatz will be available on vinyl, CD and digital on September 10th via Happy Robots and Alice Hubble is set to take her immersive live show on the road this Autumn.

New to Happy Robots! We are thrilled to share with you the first release by Field Glass.

for fans of: Four Tet, Caribou, múm, AIR, Slowdive, folktronica.

Working together for the first time, brothers Dan and Jacob Mayfield are Field Glass. 'Gardens' is the debut release, taken from their incoming album ‘Kin’ which will be released on 27th May. Using a variety of acoustic instruments, such as a Victorian travelling organ and a dulcitone, together with analogue electronics, they have composed a series of lush instrumental pieces, recorded with their friend Mike Collins at Big Jelly Studios, a beautiful deconsecrated chapel in Ramsgate.

'Gardens' is a stunning encapsulation of their sound; upbeat and emotive, you can almost smell the summer air and feel the swaying flowers, conjured by their lush folkadelic sound.   

Field Glass’s music touches on electronica, shoegaze and ambient, blending instruments and found sounds into short minimalist tracks. In 2015 they founded the Hannah Peel and Jarvis Cocker endorsed, School of Noise, a workshop for children and young people exploring music and the science of sound, this inspired them to rediscover their own excitement for making music and to experiment with sonic possibilities.

The album 'Kin' will be released on limited edition clear vinyl lathe cut LP and on all major digital platforms, distributed by Cargo Records. The LP will be available to pre-order from the Happy Robots Bandcamp from the 6th May.

Out on 22nd July, the new Mood Taeg album ‘Anaphora Versions’ is released which presents a series of remixes and re-workings by the band and their collaborators of tracks from their sold out 2022 LP ‘Anaphora’.

 

For fans of: Harmonia, Stereolab, Neu!, Kraftwerk,  Street-sounds Electro, Adam Curtis.

 

Mood Taeg (pronounced Mood Tag) is a three-piece Scottish/German musical project split between two studios and two continents, with members’ tdk and K’ko operating out of Düsseldorf and Lowell Freeman based in Shanghai.

They have been described as neo-Krautrock but outside of their kosmische roots, they also cite John Carpenter, Philip Glass, Mastermind Herbie, Isao Tomita, and LFO, as influences. The band self-produce  between their Shanghai and Düsseldorf studios and are part of the wider Mood Taeg Kollektiv which includes musicians, graffiti artists, DJs, photographers, painters, and video artists.

For ‘Anaphora Versions’, Mood Taeg have combined their own re-imaginings of album tracks with those by musicians from tdk and Lowell’s hometown of Dundee and K’ko’s hometown of Düsseldorf. In doing so, they continue their approach of being part of a wider collective of artists rather than just a 3-piece band, an approach which allows for fascinating new takes on their music.

 

Album opener, ‘Happiness Fragment’ sees tdk and K’ko take a poppier path with their DanKe version. Following that, scratch DJ and Scottish graffiti artist Vera turns ‘Konkord’ into a beat heavy study of  head-nodding bliss, whilst Lowell Freeman transposes ‘Pilomotor Reflex’ from its motorik roots to nostalgic electronica. ‘Ohrwurm’ sees the Düsseldorf artist Liefergasse add a Germanic twist, followed by Jan the Man and his dystopian public service announcement version of ‘Diskonkordanz’. For the Electric Boogaloo version of ‘Pilomotor Reflex’, Lowell dusts off his Roland TR-808 and revisits his Street Sounds Electro roots for inspiration. The Alien Cormorant delivers a rockier take on ‘Diskonkordanz’ that finishes with a flourish reminiscent of Sonic Youth’s Teenage Riot. The album closer is the radio version of Squirrels Dancing Among Elephants.

 

In addition to the 9 listed tracks, the CD version features two exclusive hidden tracks, the Shanghai radio mixes of ‘Happiness Fragment’ and ‘Pilomotor Reflex’. The album cover features work by Düsseldorf photographer and ‘Kollektiv’ member Faible.

 

Mood Taeg’s two albums on Happy Robots 'Exophora' and ‘Anaphora’ received acclaim from the likes of Prog, Electronic Sound Magazine, The Dorf, Last Day Deaf, The Electricity Club, Freq Joyzine, Shindig! and more with radio play on BBC Scotland and BBC 6 Music including play from Steve Lamacq, Gideon Coe, Cery Matthews and Stuart Maconie's Freak Zone.

The recent album by Roman Angelos "Music for Underwater Supermarkets" released in 2022 by Happy Robots, paints a sonic dreamscape where the mundane act of grocery shopping meets the future. “Music for Underwater Supermarkets” continues and extends Roman's obsession with library and soundtrack music of the past, fusing that aesthetic with childhood memories of being pushed around in shopping carts and visiting strip malls. Vibraphones chime alongside woodwinds and vintage synthesizers, creating an immersive sound that feels exotic and smooth.

This new single "The Aimless Aquanaut" picks up and develops one of the lush ambient breaks featured in "Music For Underwater Supermarkets". Roman Angelos’ extended version draws upon the influence of Steve Reich and kosmische music, bringing the listener into a state of suspended meditation. It is both meditative and reflective, and could as easily soundtrack one of the more contemplative moments in an episode of 'Stranger Things' as well as soundtrack your next visit to a spa retreat.

The Riptide and Rumble remix by producer/engineer Scott Solter is a preview of his upcoming full remix album of “Music For Underwater Supermarkets”. Solter weaves in darker ambience, with hints of early industrial, while still maintaining the aquatic feeling of the song, making for something soothing and spine-tingling. Solter’s full remix album “Supermarkets, Underwater” will be available in Spring 2023 on Happy Robots Records

We are thrilled that HOLOGRAM TEEN has returned to Happy Robots with her new single; a full six years and two albums since her last full release for the label.

Hologram Teen is the solo project (and anagram) of former STEREOLAB keyboardist Morgane Lhote.

Her colourful playful electronic instrumentals are heavily influenced by horror soundtracks, Italian disco and hip-hop.

Initially from Paris, Morgane moved to London when she was 20, spent nearly 20 years in New York city before moving to LA where she concentrated on her solo material. Her most recent album ‘Day-Glo Chaos’ released on Ransom Note Records was an unashamed nostalgic musical love letter to the 1980’s mixing cinematic strings, French Pop, video game soundtracks, a dash of drum and bass and vocoder vocals.

Her new single for Happy Robots is a double A-side.

A side “The Restless Cyclops” layered with synth strings, electric piano and bell sounds, is impossible to pigeonhole, it’s full spectrum pop-music that we can only describe as ‘restless disco’. And flip over the disc to the AA side ‘Hologram Twang!’ and Morgane introduces flourishes from another genre she loves; country music. Atmospheric washes combine with synth chimes and electronic slide-guitar. This could almost be the soundtrack to the opening of the pearly gates for another country legend, to be at eternal peace from perpetual heartache.

Rodney Cromwell returns just weeks after the release of his last single ‘The Winter Palace’ with a new song released for the Christmas season. ‘Cold Christmas’ was written for the annual ‘A Very Cherry Christmas’ compilation from Cherryade Records, and is released on its own right as a digital single on 9th December via Happy Robots.

This is no Cliff Richard Christmas hit though. A relentless krautrock beat propels a driving synth bass line, layered with Cromwell’s signature ARP synth strings and a thumping bass guitar. It is the most knowingly gothic song that Cromwell has released to date. 
  
As the UK descends into another round of austerity, the lyrics of ‘Cold Christmas’ are like ‘Eleanor Rigby’ turbo-charged for 2022. “Julie wanted a Xmas tree, until she fell into poverty, the house is cold and the lights are off, and now she’s getting a nasty cough”. 

‘Cold Christmas’ was recorded in Cromwell’s home studio in Catford, London and was produced by Dom Cresswell at Studio AUW in Kent.  

Since the release of his debut 'Age of Anxiety' album, Rodney Cromwell has been featured by the likes of NME, Electronic Sound, Huffington Post, Paste, Shindig!, Louder Than War, The Big Takeover, Magic RPM and the Bandcamp homepage. He’s had national radio play in Japan, Finland, Germany and multiple spins on RTE in Ireland, on BBC 6 Music in the UK and RNE3 in Spain for whom he recorded a live session.

The Rodney Cromwell live set is a joyful mixed-media extravaganza, incorporating analogue synths, video visuals and live instrumentation, interjected by Rodney’s 'offbeat wit'' (NME). His debut festival appearance at Indietracks was described as 'like a spiritual experience". He has shared stages with acts including A Flock of Seagulls, Pram, Death & Vanilla, Marsheaux, Rowetta, M!R!M, Damo Suzuki and Steve Davis. In 2022 he recorded a live session for Electronic Sound and in the autumn played a series of dates with Blancmange.

Following up on his LP “Music For Underwater Supermarkets”, Roman Angelos now presents “Supermarkets, Underwater,” a fully reimagined remix of the original album from producer/engineer Scott Solter. Solter flips the script,  taking the bouncy and upbeat material of the original album and creating a darker and more ambient landscape.  Weaving in noise and shifting electronic percussion, Solter creates an entirely new record. Listeners dive deeper into unknown waters, no longer shopping alongside the friendly fish. 

Lead track “Swimming Through The Aisles (Teeming Mix)” uses the same irregular time signature and feel of the original, but adds in tremoloed vibraphones, reverse guitars, and electronic drums, giving the music a new feel of exploration.

On "Abyssal Plain (Backmasking Mix)", Solter uses tape manipulation and loops, audio filters, and damaged devices to take one small section of the song and enlarge it into its own unique world.

Roman Angelos is the project of Brooklyn producer Rich Bennett. Roman was invented as a vehicle for Bennett to explore his obsession with library recordings of the 60's and 70s, muzak and exotica. Bennett has also been involved in a diverse group of musical projects, including the newly reunited outsider/60s proto-punk group The Shaggs, dream-pop band Mahogany, and Brazilian funk group Limoncello.

Happy Robots Records are excited to follow up the ‘Exophora' album and Versions EP from Mood Taeg with a new double A side 7” lathe cut single featuring, on one side, a radio edit of album track Corpora and, on the other, a brand new track, Konkord.

Mood Taeg (pronounced mood tag) is a Scottish/German musical project split between Düsseldorf and Shanghai.

Mood Taeg create music that incorporates the motorik drumming of Klaus Dinger and Jaki Liebezeit; the melodic sensibilities of Neu! and Kraftwerk; and the experimentation of Can, Cluster and Harmonia to produce instrumental compositions that are contemporary and, at the same time, fit exactly within the lineage of their influences.
Mood Taeg see their music as uncompromising but totally accessible. They don’t believe the form dictates the art. For them, the art dictates the form. Thus, songs can be 10 minutes long with passages built on motorik grooves punctuated with vocal samples featuring anything from the poetry of Christopher Logue to the writings of Oliver Sachs. Mood Taeg record all of their music at their home studio, Lowell’s Garden. They are also part of the wider mood taeg kollektiv which includes musicians, graffiti artists, DJs, photographers, painters, and video artists.
