Isn’t toxic love addicting? I certainly think so. Without even realizing it, there have been a few times I have fallen in lust. There’s something about the familiarity of pain mixed with oxytocin, dopamine, and cortisol that makes toxicity so alluring…and hard to break away from. In my new single, “same old story,” I explore my previous romantic patterns and how one can easily romanticize the thrill and chaos associated with toxic “love.”

In his collection called "Mesnavi", Rumi wrote the following poem using his favorite wooden calligraphy pen:

beshnõ een nay chon shekayat meekonad
Listen to this reed-flute, how it complains
بِشنو این نَی چون شِکایَت می‌کُند

az jodāyeehā hekāyat meekonad
it tells stories of separation pains
از جُدایی‌ها حِکایَت می‌کُند

kaz neyestān tā marā beboreedé-and
since they cut me away from the reedbed
کَز نیستان تا مَرا بِبُریده‌اَند

dar nafeeram mard ō zan nāleedand
men and women have cried into my head
در نَفیرم مَرد و زَن نالیده‌اند

من به هر جمعیتی نالان شدم

jam'é badhālān ō khoshhālān shodam
with happy and sad I became a pair
جُفتِ بَدحالان و خوش‌حالان شدم

har kasee az zané khod shod yāré man
whoever thought they confided with me
هرکسی از ظَنِ خود شد یارِ من

az darooné man najost asrāré man
did not seek the secrets inside of me
از درون من نَجُست اَسرارِ من
