It Hurts / disquiet0479

As per instructions I took a recording of a car driving past, rain on cobblestones and me live scanning a FM radio band on my field kit. I screwed around with the playback speed of the samples and fed parts of the audio into Rings and Beads. I had a relaxing jam in the conservatory watching birds flit across the bird feeders and feeling the sub bass rattle of a bus speeding down the main road.

Tune In Tune Out (disquiet0479)

In response to the recent disquiet junto challenge: Truck radio train.
I used two samples from freesound:

The Assignment: Locate three sound sources and make something with them.

Step 1: Locate online (freesound.org 3, for example) or record by yourself the following three sounds: a vehicle driving speedily, static between radio stations, and rain.

Step 2: Make an original piece of music using those three sounds. Do what you want with them, but only use those three sounds.

Background: “Wherever we are, what we hear is mostly noise. When we ignore it, it disturbs us. When we listen to it, we find it fascinating,” John Cage said in his 1937 lecture, “The Future of Music: Credo.” He continued: “The sound of a truck at fifty miles per hour. Static between the stations. Rain. We want to capture and control these sounds, to use them, not as sound effects, but as musical instruments.” In this week’s Disquiet Junto project, we take the proposition literally.

Nocturnal bird (Disquiet 0479)

Disquiet Junto Project 0479: Truck Radio Rain. Locate three sound sources and make something with them.

The rain is from last year's summer, the car and tram noises (no trucks today, sorry) from todays stroll in the sun and the radio was recorded with an cheap (digital) old world receiver (via headphone output, which nearly drove me mad). A "melody" can be heared, which is me manually switching LW 279, 278, 277 … and back, which was kind of melodious (maybe more like a filter sweep). I wanted to add some websdr recordings from number stations but it did'nt work out. – Arrangement in a generative Live setup. The original was much longer, but (maybe after all that disturbing noise from the radios) I thought it's better below 3 minutes, because I'm not convinced. I feel like I need some new age pads now…

Rain Tram Radio [disquiet0479]

american truck driver listening to radio ministry in the rain [disquiet0479]

My process:
Entirely made from the samples of a truck on the highway, radio static, and rain.

- Imported the samples into Ableton, chopped up transients, dragged my favourite chunks into "sampler and simpler" and set the in and out duration of the clips to create an instrument from the samples.

- The drums are mostly truck sounds and rain–– tiny clips transposed and EQd (chopped up and dragged into drum rack clip slots, arranged by their likeness to snare, kick, HH etc)

- Drums were drawn in brick by brick, The Synth instruments created by dragging into simpler were also drawn in, then I changed the envelope pitches as well to make the sound have a falling winding down effect.

- I included the radio static samples as a whole clip pitched up over time, creating some chaos :D  
- lots of EQ filtering
