The mixtape archeology continues...

I used to get a lot of stick from my mate Lack Of Afro for the way I recorded mixes before dropping this one; I used to hit record on the PC, then mix, make a mistake, rewind and mix again until finished. At the end I'd sit down in front of the PC and spend hours cutting out the sloppy bits, add extra production, remix stuff and so on.

Mr Afro was not happy with this at all. "Give me an hour straight funk mix, no tricks, just skills", he'd say everytime I gave him a new mixtape.

This live recording from 2006 is the result. It was used to promote our weekly 'Root Down' funk/soul/hiphop night, but this is the first time it's been available since we took our website down in 2007 :)

Heavy Stylus: An explosive amalgamation of Jamaican roots, hip hop beats, heavy soul breaks and blaxploitation ghetto-funk.

I’ve been rocking funk/soul/beats/hiphop/roots for around 20 years in various bars and clubs across the South West, and have supported a wide range of acts and artists such including Jelly Jazz, Boca 45, Andy Smith, Quantic, Craig Charles, DJ Food, Bonobo, Gilles Peterson, Ugly Duckling and DJ Format.

Although I started as a vinyl-only DJ in Bristol, these days I use a pair of battle-scarred Pioneer CDJs as my weapons of choice. I’m currently a resident (of 11 years) at the Angel Bar on Queen Street, and in the past have held Exeter-based residencies at The Monkey Suit, Timepiece, Dr. Inks and Verve (now Urban Underground), as well as DJing regularly for Hold it Down.
