Microscope Dwellers

One of the most pleasant and rewarding Sleep Music performances of any festival yet, I had the pleasure of being invited to Kepotopival. The Nest floor, lovingly designed by fjeden-Kollektiv was the perfect surroundings for a grounding closure of the first day of festival.

As with all Sleep Music, this recording is intended to induce the altered state of consciousness known as Hypnagogia. This ist best achieved by enjoyed lying down and listening right before or during the process of falling asleep. The volume should be moderate, not much louder than the voice of a person.

Live@Kepotopival '23 - Sleep Music Performance

On a mild autumn evening, I was invited to perform in the small and charming Lutheranian Church outside Klaipeda, Lithuania. Perhaps it was the special venue, the beautiful baltic landscape or the focused and attentive audience but the set turned out very special to me. As always, the music is best enjoyed at a moderate volume and while lying down, right at the edge of falling asleep.

As a part of my Bachelor's Thesis I'm developing a tool to make Sleep Music, catered around generating music in very long timeframes and telling a story through space and room more than through melody. The Lucidity Journals are weekly upload of a recorded improvisation with that system, both documenting its progress and representing my investigation into Sleep Music and long forms.

As my music is called sleep music, it is often assumed it's intent would be to fall asleep to. That is only half true however, as the desired state of mind is Hypnagogia, an in-between realm at the edge of sleep. In pushing against a boundary we find out who we truly are and Hypnagogia is no exception. The consciousness can be studied and understood further at the point of dissolution and fragmentation. With a careful balance of holding and refracting the attention, my music attempts to assist in this process, holding the mind in a state of flux.

The fourth installment of my sleep music series. A journey to strange places and inside the sounding object itself, ever morphing and shifting on the edge of consciousness. As with all sleep music, the ideal listening situation is before or while falling asleep played back with a quiet volume. This allows the mind to stay in the Hypnagogic state, at the border of sleep longer than usual, inducing vivid imagery, nonlinear dreams and a access to the unconscious.

After a long delay, the 5th installment is here. As it is deep winter in Germany right now, this is the winter edition, with lots of bits and slices from the sonic winter landscape. But as everything that is contains its own negation, some remembrance of summer can be found for those who listen closely.

Heinrich Lenz is a musician, sound artist and facilitator living in Köln, Germany. His main focus is the creation of music and events for Hypnagogic States, also known as Sleep Concerts. He also produces Ambient and works with sounds and installation. His music is neither fully electronic nor completely physical; as much a story to be told as a canvas for the listeners thoughts and dreams to be projected on.
