Pink Martini’s fourth studio album – Splendor In The Grass – encapsulates the band’s history and spirit of global collaboration and inclusivity. Comprised of nine original songs and four covers (with songs in English, Neapolitan, Italian, French and Spanish), Splendor In The Grass was recorded in the band’s hometown of Portland, Oregon and produced by bandleader/pianist Thomas Lauderdale and longtime collaborator and muse Alex Marashian—a college cohort of Lauderdale and vocalist China Forbes.

Nearly 75 minutes of music featuring a kaleidoscope of Pink Martini favorites studded with a bevy of unreleased gems, this album is a eye-opening exploration of Pink Martini’s 16-plus year history. This 21 track ‘best of’ album includes Pink Martini’s most acclaimed numbers alongside eight previously unreleased songs in a deluxe packaging that includes a 48 page photo book of rare Polaroids taken by bandleader Thomas M. Lauderdale. The album spans the band’s 16-plus year career and features appearances by Saori Yuki, Hiroshi Wada, Michael Feinstein, Georges Moustaki and Director Gus Van Sant making his recording debut.

Widely considered to be the “Barbara Streisand of Japan”, Saori Yuki released her debut album in Japan in 1969 and has gone on to make over 30 albums in her 42 year-career. Yuki discovered Pink Martini after the band covered her song “Taya Tan” for their 2007 album Hey Eugene! Most recently, Yuki sang a verse of “White Christmas” in Japanese for the band’s hit 2010 holiday album Joy To The World.

In honor of the year of her debut release, Saori Yuki partnered with Pink Martini and producer Thomas M. Lauderdale to create a loving tribute to the music released in 1969. Featuring Japanese pop hits alongside internationally recognized tunes like Jorge Ben’s “Mas que nada” and “Puff the Magic Dragon”, “1969″ is a brilliant collaboration, with Thomas M. Lauderdale’s magical arrangements, Pink Martini’s stellar musicianship, and Saori Yuki’s soaring vocals.
