A new piece by the Viola Torros, the ongoing research project by composer-performers Catherine Lamb and Johnny Chang, which seeks to realise and arrange the compositions of a pre-medieval composer, Viola Torros. A real pleasure to release this work following their stunning double CD on Another Timbre in late 2018.

Viola T. was an anonymous composer who worked outside of the religious and academic establishments of her time. In her own practice, she documented her works in a minimally effective way, just enough to communicate with her fellow collaborators but barely enough to preserve a legacy for later generations of enthusiasts of her music.

The concept of ‘research’ referred to by the Viola Torros Project involves studies of various relevant musical styles of the pre-medieval period (arabic, byzantine and indian modes), and investigating possible evolution of melodic and harmonic developments as V. T. might have discovered. Choosing one aspect of such a musical style to focus upon, details are discovered and presented in an arrangement for two violas, often with additional augmentations.

I love anthills - as a kid I loved watching the ants work, schleping building materials and prey home to the habitat. Nowadays I love listening to them. This is my first recording using the LOM Audio Geofon in a combination with an Aquarian Audio H2a. I had my DIY "needle" (4mm threaded rod about 30 cm/12" long)attached to the Geofon so I could go under the anthill - the hydrophone was placed on top of the hill... you can see the placement of each on the photo.
The combination works great, lots of low end from the Geofon - the hydrophone picks up the highs... I'm really happy with the results.
Recorded with Sound Devices MixPre 3II 32 bit float - In post I normalized to -1dB and took out the high end on the Geofon track.

"I first played with Derek Bailey in a quartet with Christine Jeffries (voice) & Jonny Dyani on bass. Thereafter we played mainly as a duo. I had frequented the Little Theatre Club since the late 1960s & was a member of FREE SPACE along with Trevor & the second generation of improvisers, but have no recollection of this gig…...!

The AMAZING BAND was Mal Dean’s creation, & I was privileged to be amongst the last personnel & play on the last recordings prior to & after Mal’s demise. Sadly Mick Brannen is also not around to enjoy the release of The Last Amazing Band recordings."
