I’d love to know your thought processes whilst writing this, I don’t understand it musically (i.e. I couldn’t play along to it very well, it’s far too advanced for me) and yet I connect with it strongly on an emotional level. Wonderful music.

Too Much Like Work

The Capital Jazz Project playing a piece I wrote inspired by a painting by Franz Kline called Mahoning.CJP is Joe Gilman - Piano, Henry Robinett - Guitar, Mike McMullen Tenor sax, Kerry Kashiwagi Bass and Rick Lotter on drums. Special guess Darius Babazadeh also on Tenor sax and bowed cymbal. It was recorded at my new recording studio, Studio Bohemia. It's a wave file so please be patient for it to download. It's not a final mix and it was basically not much more than a rehearsal. Recorded with Metric Halo ULN-8s.

Here’s a little laid back song from yesteryear - another 'blast from the past.' The reason I’ve kept it archived is because I think the lyrics have potential to be interpreted as a simple stripped back, acoustic guitar/vocal track some day. It was recorded by myself in my small student flat with the aid of only one microphone and one sampler in 2003.

The Plutonium Project - The Bottle (Everything Bundle Pro - Rock Session)

Axe-Fx III Firmware 12.08 features the best guitar pitch shifter I've ever experienced. It is insanely fast, which also makes it very tight.

Here's a quick clip to show my idea for a "Groove Shifter" effect where the shifted notes are offset in time to create weird syncopated polyrhythmic melodies. Using a dotted 8th delay technique to turn 8th notes into 16th notes is basically a cliché (a la "Another Brick in the Wall Part II" et al). Here, the pitch shift adds a cool twist. One expression pedal controls Input Gain of an extra Delay. Another controls Input Gain on a Plex Reverb. I improvised the guitar part to a drum loop and then layered synth bass and hihats. I'll try to develop this idea into something more structured.

It's a testament to this new shifter that you can't tell which notes are played and which are created by the effect!

Grooveshifter! Axe-Fx III 12.08 Pitch Block

FOR MILES - I wrote this in the winter of 1981 in my loft on West 30th Street in New York. I was feeling bad about the way things had gone with me and Miles earlier that year and I wanted to write something special for him that I thought might patch things up between us. Unfortunately he never got to play it ... or even heard it. The melody at bar 17 is a bit reminiscent of the bridge of "Milestones". Here Randy Brecker is in the role of Miles - complete with Harmon mute - and does a beautiful job.

For Miles

I'm a jazz guitarist, composer and recordist. I also taught jazz at the University Of The Pacific and Consumnes River College. I own a recording studios - Henry's Place a tracking facility out of my home. My band is The Henry Robinett Group, which has been in existence in one form or another since 1985. We released 5 CDs.  The latest, "I Have Known Mountains" is the 5th in the series but without the group. I also play with The Capital Jazz Project.  In addition I'm active in producing various artists across the stylistic spectrum. 

I've taken a lot of my inspiration from my late cousin,  jazz great Charles Mingus. I lived and studied with him briefly in the mid-late 70s.

On this site I will put things up, all unfinished works in progress, unless I indicate otherwise, to either show what I'm working on or to give an overview.  We're working on a couple of CDs.  There's a wide variety of material, so I don't know whether it will become two or three different CDs, straight ahead jazz, my more accessible material or what. Many of the pieces here I have no plans to release on a CD. But it's good to get some feedback or just a feel for what folks are listening to. 

On another note, as I'm sure there's enough music here to upset everybody. Part of the pleasure of being a guitarist who plays jazz is being exposed to a wide variety of music in the popular idiom.  And frankly I love all genres. Part of my uniqueness, if there is any,  is being willing and able to play at most styles.  I don't consider my more "accessible" elements selling out, because I really like them, and I still play everything in my own style, rather than trying to cop anyone else either compositionally or guitaristically. What's more what personally drives me crazy is the narrow minded, musical fascism; almost a form of musical bigotry, that an artist has to stay within the confines defined as X or that anything but X is invalid as an art form worthy of ones attention.  The timbre of guitar and music has changed over the years. I like to explore it all. 

I believe part of an artists responsibility to is write what he hears and play what he imagines, if he likes it, regardless of other peoples considerations or pressure, one way or the other. If I only did straight ahead jazz or only did funk or only rock, I'd be dishonest.
