The Twenty 20s are a six-piece 50's inspired, surf-lounge-new-wave-exotica-americana band, they are plucked from Melbourne's most inventive, swingin' and quirky musical avenues and they are the hot pick of Blues& Roots, Swing, Americana, Classical, Big Band and Zydeco music. This album has atmospheric originals, surprising covers and a small selection of historical American classic songs - and cameo appearances from well known and loved cats from the Melbourne scene. A record for falling in love.

Recorded all in the one room, over one year, in busy Belmar Studios in Altona - by band leader, bassist and composer Steve Purcell (Boof!, The Pearly Shells) mixed by Steve Purcell and Nicky Bomba (Bomba, John Butler Trio) and mastered by David Briggs (Little River Band).

For most of the ‘50s American actress Ava Gardner was called “The most beautiful woman in the world”. In 1959, aged 36 she was hired to come to Melbourne, Australia to star in “On The Beach”, a film about a nuclear war. Ava was famously quoted as saying “They picked the perfect place to make a film about the end of the world”. But she never actually said this, it was invented by a reporter, from a Sydney newspaper!

Ava’s battles with the Australian press, and the pestering of the Melbourne public, combined with the extreme heat, dust and flies at the end of a long Aussie drought, made her stay a real trial which she bore with professional discipline. Then in the last two weeks of filming she let her guard down in the company of a group of Melbourne jazz musicians that she had befriended, and the real Ava emerged, hard drinking, a wild party girl, a great broad! She grew especially close to her film double Grace Maxwell and a young Jazz singer Joe Lane. And then…her former husband, Frank Sinatra arrived, ostensibly to do some shows but intent on winning her back. Suddenly Melbourne found itself the backdrop to high drama and high times featuring world stars and show biz greats.

“AVA (at the end of the world)” is about what happened in those two amazing weeks.

The 2017 EP : Azure-Te (Paris Blues).. this selection of songs from the 40's and 50's paint a vignette of Hetty's experience and feelings as she moved from her Melbourne home to begin a new adventure in Paris. Recorded with James Sherlock (on both rhythm and lead guitars) you'll hear the pretty and often requested French song 'Tout Doucement' as well as Hetty's ode to caffeine 'Coffee Time' (dedicated to Melbourne of course) and her favourite Tadd Dameron ballad 'If You Could See Me Now'. 

Only 300 copies have been pressed and printed, they're perfect as a gift or to add to your music collection. Hetty will be selling these EPs during her Australian tour between 27 October - 13 December. Show are listed on her Facebook page.

"In January 2017, I moved by myself from Melbourne Australia to Paris France. I can’t tell you one particular reason why, but I can tell you I was ready, and it felt right. Moving to Paris was, and is, one of the most rewarding and challenging things I’ve ever done.

I love to sing standards, and I chose these beautiful songs to represent the myriad emotions I felt before, during and after my arrival. I flew away from the people and the things I love to try something new, and as I tumbled into France, brave, joyful, hopeful and unprepared, I broke my heart and fell in love again a million times. Sometimes great distance allows us to see clearly, and sometimes absence does make the heart grow fonder.

Many of these songs are for friends who were kind to me, friends who have inspired me, and friends I miss when I’m either in France or Australia. So, it’s fitting to think of this album as a love song, to two cities, to new and old friends, and to being brave.

This album took a somewhat meandering path along the boulevards of Paris before it reached its final destination. Now that it’s here, I hope you enjoy it." Hetty Kate x

Recently relocating to Paris, Hetty is often credited with an ‘effortless’ vocal style. One of Australia’s busiest jazz vocalists, Hetty sings with her own bands as well as touring with Australian jazz legend James Morrison for over four years. 

In the last decade she has toured in Asia, Europe and North America and joined the Melbourne, Tasmanian, Hong Kong, Auckland, Christchurch and Sydney Symphony Orchestras for James Morrison’s popular show ‘The A to Z of Jazz’. Personal highlights include performing at the Sydney Opera House and joining the Amazing Keystone Big Band (FR) for their West Side Story concert, as Maria.

Equally at home delivering a poetic ballad as fronting a hot swing band, Hetty’s lyrical delivery, natural sound and impeccable timing truly set her apart from her contemporaries.
