SIGNAL SESSIONS 004: DJ Alone Again

I've been trying to make a habit of drawing poems from my deck of 108 divination cards, posting images and, reciting them. Today I pulled #54 Zubeneschamali.

The poem reads:

No bloodletting, neo-nothing
maize-reading marrow child.
Mistake no arthritic matriarch
of crows, purveying several
generations, for verdict. Not
justice: to shadow, scorpionic
with enmity, but the epiphany
to retire the onyx helmet cumin
bowl, writing passages daily.
It is by the ponic materiality
of their utterance, one comes
to embody power, horrendous
-ly mobilized dollop muscle.
Grim memoir burning in her left
hand, the woman has lit the fire.
Smoke, a mouth, her bricolage,
reframes the hypaethral night.

These poems take inspiration from finding a black mamba skin in Ngamiland, Botswana in 2009. "Self-Portrait as Queen of Adders" was published in Beloit Poetry Journal, and "Black Mamba Molt" appears in Rhino.

you’ve sighted me among red lechwe
lunging over waterlogged weeds, my snarl
a curl slurring psalms of a mokoro sunday.

I am that claw or that hook in that mouth,
that fullrot hole, that venomous root.
I am metal in the sole

of your Durashock boot, a body toggling
after an asp’s mass of fiends—heathen
me, lurching low in the lichlands,

slaloming for meat—I am the flintlock,
the long fang, harpooning through air,
the snare kept and coiled

on the battlefront, a hoplite in scalemail,
this merciless gab, both ghost raid
and drone war, this star-garnet crown,

this whipcord in longhand is me as a snake
the charmer, the wrangler, the rat—those too
are me. And the slipknot. And the bullet—

Black Mamba Molt

You, flat peeled sacrament,
shucked off shackle of skin, you
are clasping ragged days
against knee-length swaths
of creeping bristle grass
 
Ghost of the ambivalent field,
I’ve found you, underside
dust-flecked and flaking,
olive husk gone sallow, spangled
and lucent in the sun’s undoing
 
Skin? No, call you home,
scaled sheath, opened end,
call you mouth, mouth agape,
the scatters. You jilted rind,
mother of lead, I hold you,
dendrotoxic in a life hence,
and do my little dance
which looks like this:

This poem "...because i don't seek inclusion", was initially published in the now-defunct BOAAT magazine. It was translated by Kenneth Cumba for inclusion in "Puerto Rico en mi Corazón" a series of broadsides, printed to raise funds following Hurricane Maria. These poems were later anthologized in print and republished online with Anomalous Press.

The idea of citizenship is just
another wall that divides us.

I’m speculating futures.

I loot a salutation to a white christ
of its contraband and found

"...because I don't seek inclusion" (trans. Kenneth Cumba)

I wrote this poem following the ratification of H.R. 4900 PROMESA, a devastating colonial bill imposed by U.S. Congress upon Puerto Rico that installs an unelected board of global financiers in control of the island's governmental machinations, ushering in a new era of colonial rule.

I "blacked out" the voluminous bill, writing over it, to ultimately compose this (palimp)sestina, repeating the most prevalent words that appear across the document. An older version of this poem was selected by Carmen Jimenez and published on the Academy of American Poetry's Poem-a-Day series in late 2018. 

I imagined perform this text as a curse, calling for the law's abolition, liberation and reparations for Puerto Rico (after over a century of colonial rule) and all victims of U.S. imperialism.

The text reads:

P̶R̶O̶M̶E̶S̶A̶

And in each for such as fall to board
reduced to liquid dispute over sight
the term means and the term means
territory the term me- island budget,
its sole discretion reports instrument
pursuant to paragraph or subsection
 
session the public powers by section
data in the sunshine code; the board

with respect to Puerto Rico its budget
with respect to the budget the meaning
