Faith In Strangers’ was written and produced between January 2013 and June 2014, and was edited and sequenced in late July this year. Making use of on an array of instruments, field recordings, found sounds and vocal treatments, it’s a largely analogue variant of hi-tech production styles arcing from the dissonant to the sublime. The first two tracks recorded during these early sessions bookend the release, the opener ‘Time Away’ featuring Euphonium played by Kim Holly Thorpe and last track ‘Missing’ a contribution by Stott’s occasional vocal collaborator Alison Skidmore who also appeared on 2012’s ‘Luxury Problems’. Between these two points ‘Faith In Strangers’ heads off from the sparse and infected ‘Violence’ to the broken, downcast pop of ‘On Oath’ and the motorik, driving melancholy of ‘Science & Industry’ - three vocal tracks built around that angular production style that imbues proceedings with both a pioneering spirit and a resonating sense of familiarity. Things take a sharp turn with ‘No Surrender’- a sparkling analogue jam making way for a tough, smudged rhythmic assault, while ‘How It Was’ refracts sweaty Warehouse signatures and ‘Damage’ finds the sweet spot between RZA’s classic ‘Ghost Dog’ and Terror Danjah at his most brutal. ‘Faith in Strangers’ is next and offers perhaps the most beautiful and open track here, its vocal hook and chiming melody bound to the rest of the album via the almost inaudible hum of Stott’s mixing desk. It provides a haze of warmth and nostalgia that ties the nine loose joints that make up the LP into the most memorable and oddly cohesive of Stott’s career to date, built and rendered in the spirit of those rare albums that straddle innovation and tradition through darkness and light.

How It Was

The white island is a mythical place, a magical haven amidst the adriatic sea. Blue waves move above the sands as they slowly come and go with the tide. A school of fish swims beneath the water amidst corals and underneath the warm rays of the sun. 

Paul Twin has captured the essence of melancholy and euphoria on this release for Nous'klaer Audio.

Null + Void -  Where I Wait (feat. Dave Gahan) Remixes Pt .3  Alva Noto / Úlfur Eldjárn 

Building on the remix project of Null + Void’s (@nullandvoidmusic) ‘Where I Wait’, the third part of the project invites the one and only Alva Noto (@alvanoto) to provide his magic to Kurt Uenala’s standout track from last year’s album.

Carsten Nicolai needs little introduction, but it is fair to say that his Alva Noto project has collapsed the boundaries between techno, noise and soundtracks over his long and illustrious career.

Here he dives into ‘Where I Wait’ with precision tools, producing a thick, atmospheric electro rhythmic bed for Dave Gahan’s iconic vocals. The track finds a deep groove and sticks to it - the analog richness of the synth pulses a result of his unending quest for sonic brilliance.

The Alva Noto remodel dub strips away much of the vocals, but leaves fragments in place, dubbed out and sparse.

Also included on this release is the Aristókrasía Version in collaboration with Iceland’s Úlfur Eldjárn (@ulfureldjarn) - previously surfaced towards the end of last year following the Cryosleep album, but here given a new lease of life in all its rich, neoclassical grandeur. Sweeping strings replace the electro pulses, and provide a totally new perspective on the track.

Endgame

Joris Biesmans returns to his own TVe imprint for another edition of perfectly oscillated, expertly executed machine funk of the highest order. ‘Ollantaytambo’ is a Peruvian hillside village known for its Inca-era heritage, and in it’s honour, the Berlin-based Belgian finds his own buried gold in the lead track. A subtle, elongated and hugely effective build-up leads to a brilliant entanglement of fantastically rubbery acid lines, twinkling, dream-like synths and hypnotic drums. Another Biesmans production with big-room potential, yet much more beyond.

On remix duties, Innervisions signing Aera drops the tempo to explore Biesmans’ production on a deeper, somewhat more spiritual level. Without ever sacrificing the natural groove of the original, he expands the landscape of the track to incorporate loose, live percussion, naturalistic samples and a subtropical atmosphere that’s difficult to describe. Finally, sounds stretch into further areas of musical and mind expansion on the tellingly titled ‘Ayahuasca Version’ of the track.

Deru’s last record, 1979, dealt with individual human emotions. His new project, Torn In Two, zooms out and deals with human existence as a whole. It finds feelings of frustration, dissociation and anger, but from a high vantage that affords perspective and allows the project to include acceptance, beauty and tranquility. 

Torn In Two includes a series of accompanying films that magnify the project’s themes, with effigies that absorb and reflect the human condition. They burn, they bleed, they hold their young, they get swallowed by the waves. Humans are absent. The world independent of us, without us. Humanity at a crossroads.

Safer Streets Team, Society of Sports Therapists and Sea Surface Temperature all called up this Premiere and they are all really annoyed, they are livid, in fact. They feel like their acronym has been stolen by Pink Skull, the trio who have released on Beachcoma, My Favourite Robot and Melomana. In fact they are so annoyed that they even write a strongly worded letter to their MPs, written in blood, exclaiming 'You Ruined SST For Me.' 
The Ransom Note's sister label Insult to Injury has exploded onto the scene with a series of EPs from label boss Tim Clerkin picking an excellent set of producers such as Anna Lann & Emmanuel Caurel and Dark Circles and now Pink Skull. 
F4n4pt is a dark smouldering kik laden analogue beast packed full of bassy Brutesque sounds, menacing breakdown and a killer drop which changes the feel of the track nicely. Straddling the line between experimental acid and straight up EBM, easily a highlight from the EP which also features a further two original tracks along with a Tim Clerkin remix. This really is faultless stuff.
