i would've liked to spend a bit more time on this one and smooth out some rough spots. but it does what it needs to do. vacation is about 2/3 over; reflecting on that, on how i spend my time, how i've spent my life.

"sub letting"

i brought my seldom-used melodica along on my trip thinking that it might come in handy, living without a keyboard for a month (besides the small and rather flimsy midi controller i also brought) and as an option for "creative" weeklybeats-making in the absence of my home setup. so here it is.

the place i've been living for this past month is on the corner of a busy street, in a rainy city. it's an old house and the outside noise can be heard clearly from inside. i wanted to capture this place. so i set my phone near the door to record the sounds of traffic on the wet street, and paced around the room improvising on the melodica. a few days later when i sat down to work with the audio i decided to actually not edit anything out and leave the whole thing as is - plus a bunch of delay fx and some additional layers here and there. i could do a lot more mixing and editing on this, but i already spent more time on it than i would have expected to. i might tinker with it some more in the future, but this is finished enough for a wb submission.

the piece wanders, trying to find its way, finds a bit of stability in the recurring chord progression, and then confidently ends with a proper "beat" i made earlier this week using the midi controller + daw. i've hit my stride here, but sadly it is time to go.

this trip was meant to be life-affirming, and it has been. i am going to miss this place and i don't want to leave. grateful for the special people i've met here ;)

the evening breeze caressed the trees...

wrapping up may with a meditative ambient track. this is the third and hopefully final version of this track i started earlier this year. i'd put it away for awhile and then come back, etc. 

the whole thing is made from a single building block, a short chunk of audio. i won't say what i've done to it but it is a multi stage process (mixture of aleatoric and controlled processes) and there are many layers interacting with each other. 

i have an album's worth of similar tracks made over the past few years, and have vaguely intended to release them this year under my official name, but that hasn't happened yet. so in the meantime you can have this one :)

additional notes on hhuwoa artwork:

a friend asked me if the image i used for this track is a.i. generated, because it has that sort of fantastical lighting you see in a lot of a.i. generated images. the answer is no, it is a photo taken with my phone from a real live natural landscape. and more importantly: no, i do not use a.i. generated images whatsoever and it is my personal opinion that a.i. "art" is not art, and that a.i. has no place in the world of art. i would rather see the clumsiest, most amateur human artwork than an a.i. generated image. humans make art; art is one of the things that make us human. by designing a.i. to make our art for us we are going in the wrong direction. i will never use a.i. generated images in any of my material, not only as a matter of principle but also because i find it visually offensive. for the artwork that accompanies my tracks, i use any of the following: my own digital art made with very simple tools, drawings, modified screenshots of corrupted video files, or photos.

because we are now at the stage where a viewer might not be able to distinguish between human-made art and a.i. generated imagery, i felt it was necessary to make this statement, as it is something i feel very strongly about.

ok, that's probably enough of these. this is a reprise/alternate (opposite?) version of "bustin' out" plus coda, thus completing the "june suite" that developed out of that track. i know there's one more upload date in june, so i might come up with a way to make it a 5-parter. but it is feeling complete as 4 tracks, i think with "tune-up" and "smoke gets in your eyes" in reverse order. i have to say this was a lot of fun because i am using a different system than usual and cracking myself up with these chaotic drum tracks - hope the humour is obvious(?) 

probably done with the jazz standards/great american songbook naming convention schtick for now too lol. maybe one more. we'll see.

photo was taken during the june 2021 heat dome here in western canada. sympathy to those out east who have been enduring one this month.

while my goal is to stay true to the "rules" of weekly beats, and submit only finished tracks, in some cases i may upload slightly tweaked/improved versions of tracks here. i will make note where this has been done.

i do not use a.i. whatsoever for my art and never will. i feel strongly that a.i. has no place in the world of art.
