Since 2019, Hermeth has been unleashing a reckless, acid-soaked blend of ghetto tech, electro, and breakbeat that’s impossible to ignore.

Rooted in club culture but never tied to one scene, his sound thrives on distortion, chaos, and pure dancefloor energy. Born in Geneva, sharpened in the DIY trenches, and fueled by a love of 303s, he’s become a key name in Switzerland’s Brainwaves collective. His sets are wild, unplanned journeys; his production, raw and instinctive.

We caught up with him to talk creative process, hardware obsessions, the state of Swiss nightlife, and why ghetto tech still hits like nothing else.

Hidden Element, a talented young duo from Ukraine, partners up with drummer Liquid Break to deliver their debut on Translation, "The Lifeforms EP." "We Have Our Own Atmosphere (W.H.O.O.A.)" starts things off on a serene, melodic vibe with bouncing bass and crisp, rolling drums courtesy of Liquid Break. "Hot Pants" is a bass stormer of swirling mids, thunderous 808s, and a twist of juke and footwork influence. The energy soars to new heights with the future jungle sounds of "Watch Me" featuring the return of Liquid Break on drums. To close things up, Hidden Element delve into the deep and meditative side of the 140 BPM spectrum with "Musiq," blending beautifully modulated synth patterns with subtle hints of reggae and hip hop.

Roy Ayers met Fela Kuti in Nigeria in 1979. They collaborated on a two-song project called "Music of Many Colors", leaning heavily into the ideas of pan-Africanism and Afro-futurism. It was a truly awesome and historic coming together of two legendary musical geniuses.

The project came at a rare moment of optimism in Nigerian politics: the dictatorship had ended and Nigeria’s first democratic elections were held. This helps explain why the LP represents a clear shift from Fela's traditional use of music as a weapon, and rather puts forth a message of positivity and optimism. In the track "2000 Blacks Got To Be Free," they make a bold and optimistic prediction that the world would improve significantly for Black people by the year 2000. The track begins with the vocals of Ayers, as he sets the tone for the project: “We’re hoping that by the year 2000; we know that by the year 2000, that’s even better, everybody will be knowledgeable.”

Four decades have passed since Fela Kuti and Roy Ayers put forth this optimistic vision, and, this very day, masses of protestors are denouncing police brutality and demanding racial justice for Black people. Dishearteningly, we are far off from Roy and Fela's prediction in 1980. It can be demoralizing to compare the future that Fela and Roy envisioned with the reality that we’re living in today, in 2020.

Despite this hard truth, I don't believe this track was ever about accurately predicting the future. I think it was meant to teach us that positivity, unity, and togetherness is what will get us to a brighter future. In 2020, this message is relevant now more than ever, and, though we know the road will be long, Roy and Fela remind us that we must always look optimistically to the light at the end of the tunnel, however faint it may look from where we stand.

Fela Kuti and Roy Ayers - 2000 Blacks Got To Be Free (Nimbus Remix)

The mysterious afro-soul of The Shaolin Afronauts first echoed across the dance floors of Australia in early 2008. Heavily inspired by the sounds of 1970's West Africa, Ethiopia and the pioneering avant-garde jazz artists of the same period, the Shaolin Afronauts draw on the this highly innovative and sometimes volatile era in music, using it as inspiration to create music with the same fire and intensity. 

Though there is something refreshing and original about the Afronauts, their music could be described as somewhere in between the heavy Afrobeat of Fela Kuti and the Ethio-Jazz of Mulatu Astatke. 

This debut 12 inch single combines all these elements, Journey Through Time having a hypnotic, spiritual feel, whilst the B side Kibo is totally exclusive to this 12 inch single, and is an upbeat positive groove, both tracks only hinting at the delights the forthcoming album Flight Of The Ancients (FSRCD/LP085) will contain.



Journey Through Time

Hidden Element is electronic act from Kyiv, Ukraine. By blending elements of breakbeat, techno and ambient, producer Igor Kirilenko creates forward-thinking music with shifty rhythms, cinematic samples and deep textures. Inspired by classic sci-fi movies, it’s a perfect soundtrack both for crowded ecstatic club nights and solitary mind-wandering.

Igor began releasing tracks as Hidden Element in 2011, firstly as a duo with Nil Tarasov, and now as a solo project. Over the years he released music on various labels including Med School, Pinecone Moonshine, Alphacut, Silent Season, YUKU. 

Project’s track “I See The Light” (feat. Kiyomi Yamashita) was noted by DJ Mag as “Track of the Month”. Track “Reload, Replay” was played by Steve Lamacq on BBC1Xtra. Debut LP “Together” released on Absys Records in 2016 received a number of positive reviews and warm feedback from El Hornet (Pendulum), Ulrich Schnauss and other producers. 

Hidden Element also created official remixes for a variety of artists, from British drum’n’bass legend London Elektricity to Ukrainian pop-singer and Eurovision winner Jamala.

In 2020–2021 Hidden Element manifested a new ambitious chapter with EP trilogy “Comparisons” / “Kontinuum” / “Cycles”. Packed with intense contemporary breakbeat and seasoned with high class remixes from Throwing Snow, Andre Bratten, Prayer, Cocktail Party Effect, these EPs earned praise from Mixmag Japan, Mixmag UK, Mixmag Brazil, BARKS, Qetic, Inverted Audio etc. A bunch of tracks from the trilogy was also aired on BBC Radio 1 in numerous guest mixes.
