Taken from the Torn debut LP for Samurai Music - Borderline [SMDELP08]

Moscow based Ivan Karasev aka Torn inked his Samurai affiliation in 2017 with his first-ever solo vinyl release on Shiro, a sub-label for highlighting new artists. 

In the 5 years that have passed since this release, the Torn name has progressed into a widescreen sonic project leaving an indelible mark not only on DnB but also reaching into the outer edges of the underground Techno scene. 

As well as his monster debut EP (Internal - SMDE10) on the main Samurai label in 2018, Torn became one of the few artists to garner a release on Homemade Weapons' imprint Weaponry in 2019, a year which also saw him release an EP of Grey Area style Techno on Horo and a collab EP in the same style with Sam KDC and Korse as Vermisst, also on Horo. 

Since these releases, Torn has teamed up with fellow Russian artist Roho for an EP of percussive floor shakers in 2021 on Samurai Music (Fatum - SMDE19) and several self-released projects direct to his growing base of devoted Torn heads. In the background, the last few years Ivan has been diligently refining and experimenting with constructions for his debut LP for the Samurai Music label.

Borderline fulfils the promise of Ivans musical ascendancy in our sub-scene netherworld between DnB and Techno. Gut-punch kicks entwine with dense atmospheric layers, gnawing mid-riffs, and impeccably honed percussive propulsion. The cake is iced meticulously with guest collabs from Samurai Music top tier affiliates Homemade Weapons, Last Life, label head Presha and a tempo switch up to close the LP with the help of dungeon master Sam KDC and close cohort Korse.

Borderline plants a confident, empowered, flag on the electronic music landscape with Torn's name on it.

An elusive, anonymous producer whose veil has allowed him to build an impressive sonic identity unhindered by preconceptions, Roho has amassed a loyal following with his contributions to various Samurai compilations, his essential debut EP (Alter Ego) for Homemade Weapons ‘Weaponry’ label and the Fatum EP alongside Torn.

Long in the works, his Samurai debut solo EP - Elemental - is another peak in his ascendance. Kicking the door in with arguably his biggest track to date - the title track Elemental, the energy level is ratcheted up to overload with a procession of searing amens, pummelling kicks and pulsing mid surges. This track has been causing maximum damage in clubs and is really a time capsule display of the half-step/breaks combination that has come to be synonymous with the Samurai sound. ‘The Primal Instinct’ leans back slightly to sway and swing the edits as it rolls, while ‘Storm’ goes for the jugular again with a robust march into a winding amen lash. Torn appears to collaborate on the EP closer ‘Phase Unwrapping’ and as always, these two like minds create something special - a distortion and fast-paced kick attack with adept fills and rolling percussion.

"8 months ago, I released my first EP with YUKU.

Nomäa was intended to be hard-hitting, and was experienced as a daily outlet, both live and digital. Däarm continues an inner journey with new influences, deep and cathartic bass that will bring you back to your primal instincts.

I'm always carried by Afro/Arabic influenced percussion, it's my own style and it's going to follow me for a while. This kind of rhythm inspires me a lot, there's no doubt about it: it's like feeling each instrument through all the bodies, which are just moving.

A more ambient and low-key feel for Däarm came to me.
Nomäa was an opportunity to evolve and develop my drums. After that, it was natural for me to return to this more "melodic" side, more musical in a way. Some synths appear and I'm happy that this other part of me has emerged and merged with the percussive/groovy side of my tracks.
The bass is also more present. I wanted this time, that people make faces when listening to this new EP, the ones we make when it's too heavy inside and that it shows on the face (cfr "Vuil").

I had the idea to separate "Donker Dag" in two parts: the first one in Nomäa, and the second one here. During a live show I had transitioned Donker Dag with an old track "Az5". This transition seemed so obvious to me that I decided to make a second version, and I like the idea of two EP's finally being intertwined.

With Däarm we are still walking along this line, other new things just came on it."

‘Mercenary’ is a 170bpm halftime stepper. Painting a picture of the dystopian cityscape, future Gotham vibes, via ominous sound design, distant alarms, choppy breaks, choral trance melodics and raging bass lines.

‘Access Point’ takes a more emotive route with this nostalgia-fuelled UKG burner. Yearnful & heavenly melodics breathe around skippy & swung rhythms, hard-hitting drums, all over a deep, foreboding sub bassline.

"My creativity is constantly ebbing and flowing. I go through months of experimentation, learning new tools, banging my head up against the wall with endless versions of tunes I’m just not happy with. And then, if I’m lucky, I hit a patch of several tunes coming together quickly. This EP was exactly that: three tunes that came together completely unexpectedly in a relatively short period of time. All of the new techniques finally melded with my mindset after a long stint of frustration and unproductiveness. No v27c, no overthinking it, just pure vibes and pieces falling into place. I had so much fun making these and I wish I knew the secret sauce for hitting that sweet spot in the studio regularly. I guess you just gotta power through the muck until the inspiration ambushes you and enjoy it while it lasts."

Counting from one to ten is one of the first things we learn when we try to speak a new language. It's also a universal language we use in our beats. Numbers are the inspiration source of this album, and its roots are in the inherent rhythmical existence of numbers in music. There is a numerical theme in all the tracks. "Hi friends! It’s Igor. I’m writing this text from Kyiv, Ukraine. 2022 was the hardest year in my life due to the war in Ukraine and due to circumstances in my personal life.

I collected 7 tracks for ‘Differences’ EP. It’s the logical continuation of my previous release on YUKU - "Ranges". This release is about love, family, friends, parting & relationships. It’s about priceless things which we often do not notice, about losing valuable people forever.

It combines sentimental mood and energetic vibes that interchange each other. My personal favorite track ‘Illyah’ was written in December 2022 and it’s dedicated to my friend who was killed by russian troops. He was a musician. Sometimes we met at my studio, we spoke about music, worked together on a few projects together. And then it happened - one day we worked and laughed together and the other day he is gone. Forever.

I hope we can start appreciating the familiar things around us a little more. The air, dear people, family. Those things that makes you happy, that make your life more meaningful.

The cover for this release was created by my friend Mitya Fenechkin and it fully encapsulates the feelings and emotions I was experiencing at the time of writing these tracks.

Hidden Element — Differences

Hidden Element is electronic act from Kyiv, Ukraine. By blending elements of breakbeat, techno and ambient, producer Igor Kirilenko creates forward-thinking music with shifty rhythms, cinematic samples and deep textures. Inspired by classic sci-fi movies, it’s a perfect soundtrack both for crowded ecstatic club nights and solitary mind-wandering.

Igor began releasing tracks as Hidden Element in 2011, firstly as a duo with Nil Tarasov, and now as a solo project. Over the years he released music on various labels including Med School, Pinecone Moonshine, Alphacut, Silent Season, YUKU. 

Project’s track “I See The Light” (feat. Kiyomi Yamashita) was noted by DJ Mag as “Track of the Month”. Track “Reload, Replay” was played by Steve Lamacq on BBC1Xtra. Debut LP “Together” released on Absys Records in 2016 received a number of positive reviews and warm feedback from El Hornet (Pendulum), Ulrich Schnauss and other producers. 

Hidden Element also created official remixes for a variety of artists, from British drum’n’bass legend London Elektricity to Ukrainian pop-singer and Eurovision winner Jamala.

In 2020–2021 Hidden Element manifested a new ambitious chapter with EP trilogy “Comparisons” / “Kontinuum” / “Cycles”. Packed with intense contemporary breakbeat and seasoned with high class remixes from Throwing Snow, Andre Bratten, Prayer, Cocktail Party Effect, these EPs earned praise from Mixmag Japan, Mixmag UK, Mixmag Brazil, BARKS, Qetic, Inverted Audio etc. A bunch of tracks from the trilogy was also aired on BBC Radio 1 in numerous guest mixes.
