The commercialisation of sport through history (Ep7 - Sport and Ireland: A History)

Maddalena Marinari is Associate Professor in History at Gustavus College in Minnesota. Maddalena has published extensively on immigration restriction and immigrant mobilization. 

She is the author of Unwanted: Italian and Jewish Mobilization Against Restrictive Immigration Laws, 1882-1965, which came out in 2020 with University of North Carolina Press, and provides the foundation for much of the discussion in this episode since it focuses on US opposition to Italian and Jewish immigrants in the late 19th century and early 20th century and outlines how Italian and Jewish communities in the US responded. 

Something that also informed the discussion is a special issue of the Journal of American History from 2022 that Maddalena co-edited with Erika Lee on the Immigration Act of 1924, which saw the US introduce an immigration quota system that substantially restricted immigration until the mid-1960s. Maddelena also co-edited, with Maria Cristina Garcia and Madeline Hsu, A Nation of Immigrants Reconsidered: U.S. Society in an Age of Restriction, 1924-1965 and she has a second related co-edited anthology coming out in 2023 with Maria Cristina Garcia titled Whose America? U.S. Immigration Policy since 1980 with the University of Illinois Press. 

Maddelena is also one of the scholars behind the excellent #ImmigrationSyllabus, an online tool for anyone interested in understanding the history behind current debates on immigration in the US.

Maddalena Marinari - Unwanted: American restrictionism and Italian and Jewish immigrants, 1882-1924

Dr Irial Glynn is Assistant Professor at the School of History, University College Dublin. He was recently awarded a €2m ERC Consolidator Grant for his study, SOS, which will investigate the history of boat refugees since the 1940s, asking who hinders and who helps asylum seekers on their journeys, and why.

1923: Hitler’s Breakthrough Year’ - Holocaust Education Ireland November Pogrom Lecture

To mark the date of the November Pogrom, Dr. Mark Jones gave a lecture - ‘1923: Hitler’s Breakthrough Year’ - in association with Holocaust Education Ireland, Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin. The lecture took place on Tuesday 7 November in Trinity College Dublin.

1923 was Hitler’s breakthrough year. From the end of 1922 up to the infamous Beerhall Putsch in Munich during the night of 8-9 November, the Nazi Party grew from around 8,000 to over 50,000 members. In this lecture, historian Mark Jones examined the history of the year 1923 through the prism of antisemitic violence. 

In this talk you will learn about individual and collective acts of physical violence against Jews, the state-led deportation of Jews from Bavaria, and the role played by antisemitism in Hitler’s attempts to destroy German democracy a decade before he was appointed Chancellor of Germany in January 1933.

Mark Jones is Assistant Professor at University College Dublin. He was educated at Trinity College Dublin, the University of Tübingen and the University of Cambridge. He holds a PhD from the European University Institute in Florence and has held visiting fellowships at the Free University of Berlin and Bielefeld University. The author of 1923: The Forgotten Crisis in the Year of Hitler’s Coup, he is among the leading English-language historians of modern Germany and a recognized authority on the history of the Weimar Republic.

The event was part of Dr Sarah Comyn's Irish Research Council MINERALS Laureate project and associated seminar series on Methodologies concerning Extractivism.

Dr Siobhán Ní Bhriain graduated from UCD Medicine in 1991. Dr Ní Bhriain trained in Medicine and Psychiatry in the UK and Ireland. She worked as a Research Fellow in the Mercer’s Institute for Research on Ageing before completing her Higher Specialist Training in Old Age and General Adult Psychiatry.

She has worked in Tallaght University Hospital/CHO 7 as Consultant in Psychiatry of Later Life since 2006 and was Clinical Director at the Tallaght and St. James’s Mental Health Services for many years.

She took up the post of NCAGL for Mental Health in January 2019 and moved to the role of National Clinical Lead for Integrated Care, Clinical Design and Innovation in February 2020. The move coincided with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and Siobhán led the development of the ‘HSE Operational Pathways of Care for Covid-19’ for the Chief Clinical Officer. She chairs the Covid Clinical Advisory Group to the CCO, as well as participating in many other Covid and non-Covid related working groups, including the National Public Health Emergency Team.

The UCD Centre for the History of Medicine in Ireland (CHOMI) based in the UCD School of History, is an interdisciplinary research centre dedicated to the study of the medical humanities. Established in 2006, the Centre seeks to promote the study of the social and cultural history of medicine. Its research and other activities are supported by a range of funding bodies.

Mary Daly - The curse of the Hospitals Sweepstake. A hospital service not a health service

Joe Mulhall is the Director of research at HOPE not hate, the UK's largest anti-fascism organisation and an expert on far-right extremism. He has a PhD on the history of fascism and his books include Drums in the Distance: Journeys in the Global Far Right; British Fascism After the Holocaust and The International Alternative Right (Co-Author).

He writes regularly for the print media including for the Guardian, Independent and New Statesman and appears regularly on broadcast media including the BBC News at Ten, Radio 4’s Today programme, The Moral Maze and Channel 4 News, among others.

Surviving Liberation: Jewish Camp Survivors 1945-1948 HEI Annual Memorial Lecture 2025 by Anthony McElligott

In this week’s episode of “Recording the Revolution”, Conor and Harlan pluck their second tape from the archive and discuss Harlan’s illuminating interview with the printer of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, Christopher “Christy” Brady. Christopher Brady reminisces on his time spent in Liberty Hall, his conversations with James Connolly and the secrecy surrounding the printing of the Proclamation. Christopher Brady was interviewed on 26 March 1972.

In 1972, Harlan J Strauss, a young American PhD student, came to Ireland and interviewed veterans of the Irish independence struggle - men and women, at this point in their 70s and 80s, who shared their experiences, sometimes for the first time.

These audio recordings sat in Harlan’s attic in Washington, DC for decades, unpublished and unheard. In 2022, Harlan brought them to Dublin and deposited them at the National Folklore Collection at UCD. This podcast explores the things those people said and how those who lived through the Irish revolution saw it fifty years after the fact.

Harlan’s tapes offer often unparalleled insights into both the experiences and perceptions of revolutionaries reflecting back on their youth. Now, 50 years later, Conor and Harlan have teamed up to delve into these interviews and get an insight into the mind of an Irish revolutionary.

Christopher Brady. Episode 2 of Recording the Revolution - The Harlan Strauss Tapes

In this week’s episode of “Recording the Revolution”, Conor and Harlan are taking a look at Harlan's interview with James M Dillon, the former leader of Fine Gael from 1959 to 1965 and son of the Home Rule MP John Dillon. James Dillon sheds light on what life was like during the Irish Revolutionary period and talks about his time spent in the Dail from the 1930s onwards. James Dillon was interviewed by Harlan on 17 March 1973.

Maire Comerford. Episode 4 of Recording the Revolution - The Harlan Strauss Tapes

In the final episode of “Recording the Revolution”, Conor and Harlan return back to the archive and pluck their final tape, which is Harlan's interview with Irish politician and managing director of the Abbey Theatre, Ernest Blythe. Ernest Blythe reflects on his early years in the IRB, the role he played in the Free State’s execution of Anti-treaty IRA members and his views on the partition of Ireland. Ernest Blythe was interviewed on 13 March 1972.
