Edward Collins
Dr. Collins is a historian of early modern Portugal and Spain, and received his doctorate at NUI Galway in 2010 under the supervision of Professor Nicholas Canny. His research focuses on early modern Iberian navigation and nautical science, with particular emphasis on Portuguese and Spanish influences on the development of nautical science in early modern Europe. He has published a number of journal articles and book chapters on these themes, and is currently in the process of completing his manuscript based on his doctoral and postdoctoral research.

Ellen Dooley received her Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, where she specialized in seventeenth and early eighteenth-century Spanish painting and print. Dr Dooley's dissertation focused on the relationships among the city of Seville's elite patrons and its community of artists. Her broader research interests include the circulation of artist prints in Spain and the Americas, the trans-Atlantic art trade, the history of the Catholic church as patron of art, and the impact of the pestilence on artistic production in Spain. She currently works as the Assistant Curator of Latin American art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

(KEPU) Ellen Dooley: The Spanish Inquisition and the religious image in Spain & America, 1478–1700

Ricardo Padrón is an Associate Professor of Spanish at the University of Virginia. His interests include the literature and culture of the early modern Hispanic world, particularly the various expressions of the Hispanic imperial imagination.

Ricardo Padrón is an Associate Professor of Spanish at the University of Virginia. He holds a BA in Political and Social Thought from the University of Virginia, an MA in Divinity from the University of Chicago, and an MA and Ph.D. in Romance Languages from Harvard University. His first book, The Spacious Word: Cartography, Literature and Empire in Early Modern Spain, was published in 2004 by the University of Chicago Press. Inspired by the work in contemporary critical geography, the book examines both maps and literary works from sixteenth-century Spain in the light of the changing conceptualizations of space and rationalizations of empire. His current work focusses on Spanish interest in Pacific and Asia in the wake of the Encounter with the Americas. He has also published on the poetry of Garcilaso de la Vega, Fernando de Herrera, and Luis de Góngora, as well as on the mapping of imaginary worlds throughout the modern period. His work has been supported by the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Spanish Program for Cultural Cooperation with United States Universities, and the University of Virginia’s School of Arts and Sciences.

Allison Bigelow is assistant professor of colonial Latin American literature in the Department of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese and affiliate faculty in Latin American Studies at the University of Virginia. From 2012 until 2014, she was a National Endowment for the Humanities postdoctoral fellow at the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture at the College of William & Mary. Her current book project, Cultural Touchstones: Mining, Refining, and the Languages of Empire in the Early Americas, reflects her diverse research expertise, from her doctorate in English, to her postdoctoral fellowship at a history institute, and the fact that she is now part of the faculty of Romance Languages.

(KEPU) Allison Bigelow: The Science of Colonial Silver: Mining & Metallurgy in Early Americas

Dr. Vivien Kogut Lessa de Sá is Teaching Associate in Portuguese Studies at the University of Cambridge. Her main interests are comparative studies in Brazilian, Portuguese and English literatures, and in early modern travel writing, especially in connection to the New World. 

Her book, The Admirable Adventures and Strange Fortunes of Anthony Knivet: an English Pirate in Brazil, published in 2015 by Cambridge University Press, is the first critical edition of one of the earliest descriptions of Brazil written by an Englishman. She had previously published a translation of Knivet’s account in Brazil (As Incríveis Aventuras e Estranhos Infortúnios de Anthony Knivet, Zahar Editores, 2007). She has published articles on early modern travel to Brazil and on Shakespearean Studies, besides three collections of poetry in Brazil and Argentina.

(KEPU) Vivien Kogut Lessa de Sá: Early Colonial Brazil, English Piracy, and Anthony Knivet

Professor Onésimo T. Almeida was born in S. Miguel, in the Azores. He graduated from the Portuguese Catholic University, Lisbon, in 1972. He received his MA (1977) and PhD (1980), both in Philosophy, at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, where he has been teaching Portuguese Cultural and Intellectual History since 1975. He also teaches interdisciplinary courses in the Renaissance and Early Modern Studies, and in the Wayland Collegium for Liberal Learning, at Brown. He was Department Chair for more than a decade. 

Author of more than two dozen books of essays as well as of creative writing, he has more than a hundred articles in collective books and journals. He is director of Gávea-Brown Publications, and editor of Gávea-Brown - A Bilingual Journal of Portuguese-American Letters and Studies. He is co-editor of Pessoa Plural (a journal dedicated to the study of Fernando Pessoa), as well as of the e-Journal of Portuguese History, all of them published at Brown. Elected member of the Academia Internacional de Cultura Portuguesa and of the Academia da Marinha, both of Lisbon, he recently received a Doctorate Honoris Causa from the University of Aveiro.

In spite of establishing itself as a leader of scientific endeavour in the 15th and 16th centuries – in particular in navigation and nautical science – the role of Portugal in the development of modern science has generally been overlooked in favour of a more Anglo- and Franco-centric narrative. 

Professor Almeida argues that we must nonetheless look at the writings by Portuguese navigators and travellers of the 15th and 16th centuries in order to understand how the 17th century scientific revolution took a few centuries to develop. The writings of the trials and errors of these navigators and scholars (most of them not very well known outside the Portuguese-speaking world) reveal how those travels contributed to the slow transformation of the medieval worldview into the modern.

(KEPU) Onésimo T. Almeida: Portugal and the Dawn of Modernity, 1419-1620

Professor Jorge Cañizares-Esguerra is the Alice Drysdale Sheffield Professor of History at the University of Texas at Austin. A native of Ecuador, he grew up in Mexico and Colombia, and received his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

He has previously taught at Illinois State University and SUNY-Buffalo. He has also been a visiting professor at several universities outside the United States, in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile, and England.

He has won numerous national fellowships given by the Social Science Research Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities (at the John Carter Brown Library), the Andrew Mellon (at the Huntington Library), the Charles Warren Center for Studies of American History (at Harvard), the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, among others.

He is the author of more than 60 journal articles and book chapters, and is the author and editor of several books, including How to Write the History of the New World, which was cited among the best books of the year (2001) by The Economist; Puritan Conquistadors; Nature, Empire, and Nation; The Atlantic in Global History, 1500-2000 (co-edited, with Erik Seeman), and The Black Urban Atlantic in the Age of the Slave Trade (co-edited with Jim Sidbury and Matt Childs).

He is currently finishing a collection of essays tentatively entitled On Prophets and Hybrid Empires, and his ongoing book project is entitled Bible and Empire: The Old Testament in the Spanish Monarchy, from Columbus to the Wars of Independence.

(KEPU) Jorge Cañizares-Esguerra: Old Testament Culture in Spanish Monarchy in 16th & 17th centuries

Dr. Zoltán Biedermann is senior lecturer in Luso Brazilian Studies and Head of Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies at the University College London School of European Languages, Culture and Society. He is the author of a number of works, including The Portuguese in Sri Lanka and South India (2014) and The Historical Atlas of the Persian Gulf (2006). He is also currently completing "Connected Empires: Sri Lanka, Portugal and the Making of Habsburg Imperialism in Asia, 1500-1600", for which he received an AHRC grant.

He has been involved in several collaborative research projects, including "Letras de Frailes: escritas franciscanas en el imperio portugués" at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, "O Governo dos Outros” at the University of Lisbon, "Comentarios de Don García de Silva y Figueroa" at the New University of Lisbon and "MEDIAN" at the French National Research Agency in Paris. He was the recipient of the Ronald Tress Prize for Research Excellence (2012) and has been recently elected a corresponding member of the Academy of the Portuguese Marine. He is a co-editor of the "Maritime Asia" book series at the German publisher Harrassowitz.

(KEPU) Zoltán Biedermann: A Negotiating Empire: Portuguese Diplomacy in Asia and Global Renaissance

Flora Cassen is Assistant Professor of History and Van der Horst Fellow in Jewish History and Culture at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. A native of Antwerp, in Belgium, she received her PhD in History and Judaic Studies from New York University in 2007. Her research has been supported by fellowships and grants from the Belgian Academy of Rome, the Medieval Academy of America, the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture, and the Vidal Sassoon Center for the Study of Anti-Semitism. 

Her forthcoming book with the University of Cambridge Press, Marking the Jews in Renaissance Italy: Politics, Religion, and the Power of Symbols, examines the roots of anti-Judaism through a study of discriminatory marks that the Jews were compelled to wear in 15th - and 16th C Italy. Her current project studies Italian Jews who were spies for the king of Spain. It examines how early modern intelligence networks functioned and probes questions of Jewish identity in a time of uprootedness and competing loyalties.

(KEPU) Flora Cassen: Philip II of Spain and His Italian Jewish Spy

Tamar Herzog is Monroe Gutman Professor of Latin American Affairs at Harvard University, Radcliffe Alumnae Professor, and an Affiliated Faculty Member at the Harvard Law School.

A legal scholar and historian by training, her work engages with early modern European history, colonial Latin American history, imperial history, Atlantic history, and Legal history. It centres on the relationship between Spain, Portugal, Portuguese and Spanish America and the ways by which Iberian societies changed as a result of their involvement in a colonial project.

Among her publications are Frontiers of Possession: Spain and Portugal in Europe and the Americas (2015), Upholding Justice: State, Law and the Penal System in Quito (2004), and Defining Nations: Immigrants and Citizens in Early Modern Spain and Spanish America (2003). Forthcoming from Harvard University Press is her A Short History of European Law: The Last Two and a Half Millennia.

She is the recipient of several scholarships and awards, including, most recently, the James A. Rawley Prize for best book in Atlantic History, awarded by the American Historical Association in 2016 for her most recent work, Frontiers of Possession. She was also named Walter Channing Cabot Fellow in 2016, also in recognition of her most recent work.

Pedro Cardim is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, and Researcher and Board Member at the Portuguese Centre for Global History (CHAM) at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, or New University of Lisbon.

His work focuses on the political and administrative history of Portugal between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, with particular emphasis on the political status of Portuguese territories, territorial expansion in the 16th and 17th centuries in Europe and overseas, political-administrative communication under the authority of the Portuguese Crown, and comparisons between Portuguese and Spanish colonization in America.

He is author and editor of a number of works, including: Portugal unido y separado, published in 2014, D. Afonso VI, co-authored with Ângela Barreto Xavier, published in 2006, and Polycentric Monarchies, co-edited with Tamar Herzog, José Javier Ruíz Ibáñez and Gaetano Sabatini, published in 2012.

From 2012 to 2016, he was Coordinator of the research project Bahia 16-19 - Salvador da Bahia: American, European, and African forging of a colonial capital city, funded by Marie Curie Actions (European Commission) under the International Research Staff Exchange Scheme.

Throughout the early modern period, Portugal and Spain underwent many profound changes, both at the political, religious, economic, and social level. They dramatically expanded their political horizons and became the heads of two global empires. Additionally, both Spain and Portugal developed their own political and administrative apparatuses, as well as their own identity markers (religion, language, literature, etc.).

In parallel, however, the exchanges between all parts of the Iberian Peninsula remained very intense, and the same could be said about the interaction between Spaniards and Portuguese. After the incorporation of Portugal into the Spanish Monarchy, this interaction became even more intense, generating contradictory reactions: stronger sentiments of belonging to the Hispanic world; an increasing fear of loss of Portuguese identity, which would persist until the end of Iberian Union in 1640.

(KEPU) Pedro Cardim - The Idea of Hispania: Portugal and Spanish Monarchy in 16th & 17th Centuries

Professor Mundy is Chair and Professor of Art History at Fordham University in New York.  She specializes in Latin American art with emphasis on indigenous art and cartography in the 16th century. 

Her first book, The Mapping of New Spain: Indigenous Cartography and the Maps of the Relaciones Geográficas (1996) was winner of the 1996 Nebenzahl Prize in the History of Cartography.  

In 2012, she co-edited a volume with Mary E. Miller, Painting a Map of Sixteenth-Century Mexico City: Land, Writing and Native Rule (Yale/Beinecke Library, 2012), which sheds light on a rare map of Mexico City, and includes the most extensive scientific analysis of any New World manuscript to date. 

Her latest book, The Death of Aztec Tenochtitlan, the Life of Mexico City (2015), centers on Tenochtitlan-Mexico City and its transformation from the sacred capital of the Aztecs into the center of Spain's overseas empire. It was winner of the 2015 Arvey award from the Association of Latin American Art for the year's best book on Latin American art history, and received the Latin American Studies Association Colonial section book award. It has recently received the 2017 Bryce Wood Book Award from the Latin American Studies Association.

Professor Mundy's interest in digital humanities has resulted in a pioneering work, Vistas: Visual Culture in Spanish America, 1520-1820, that was co-authored with Dana Leibsohn and funded by an N.E.H. digital development and demonstration grant, which is now accessible online www.fordham.edu/vistas.

Aaron Alejandro Olivas is assistant professor of History at Texas A&M International University (Laredo, TX).

His research focuses on the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Iberian Atlantic World, specifically trans-imperial relations between elites of Spanish America, France, and the French Antilles. He has published a number of articles and essays on the topic. His current book project examines colonial responses to the transition from Habsburg to Bourbon rule in the Spanish Empire.

War of the Spanish Succession

The Habsburg dynasty in Spain, which oversaw an unprecedented rise of Spanish power and hegemony in Europe and overseas in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, reached a dramatic end in 1700. The last Habsburg ruler, Charles II, died on November 1st, All Saints’ Day, of that year, without a direct descendant. This precipitated a political crisis, which led to a war of succession involving virtually every major western European power. The conflict, which we know as the War of the Spanish Succession, ended with the accession of a French Bourbon prince, Philip of Anjou, grandson of Louis XIV of France. Philip of Anjou, who became known as Philip V of Spain, was the first of the Spanish Bourbon monarchs. This dynastic shift had profound implications in Spain, Europe and the Americas. 

While the War of the Spanish Succession has generally been analysed from a European perspective, there were in fact other elements, which allude to several crucial points regarding the War outside of Europe. First, that the war in its Atlantic World context was essentially a commercial conflict fought by the French against the English and the Dutch for control of global trade networks. Secondly, that the succession of a Bourbon prince to the Spanish throne had facilitated French merchants in superseding their Anglo-Dutch competitors in terms of access to the highly profitable Spanish-American market. And, finally, that the triumph of French economic influence over the viceroyalties of New Spain and Peru was in effect solidified by political alliances created between Louis XIV’s court and Spanish colonial elites.

(KEPU) Aaron Alejandro Olivas - Iberian Atlantic and the War of the Spanish Succession, 1700-1715

Amelia Almorza Hidalgo is a postdoctoral researcher at the Universidad Pablo de Olavide in Seville. She is part of a Project funded by the European Research Commission: An ARTery of EMPIRE. Conquest, Commerce, Crisis, Culture and the Panamaian Junction (1513 – 1671), which is directed by Professor Bethany Aram, at Pablo de Olavide.

Dr Almorza received her PhD in History from the European University Institute in Florence in 2011. Her doctoral research focused on the analysis of the emigration of women and families to the Viceroyalty of Peru in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, particularly in relation to the processes of social mobility of the colony. 

Her research has been published in a number of articles and essays, and she is a member of several national research groups, as well as an international network of consumer studies.

Her current research forms part of a larger project, which applies historical, archaeological and archaeometric methodologies to evidence of encounters between peoples and goods from Europe, America, Africa and Asia that took place on the Isthmus of Panama during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Spanish emigration to the New World was one of the most significant waves of relocation in human history, in terms of numbers and the impact on the American landscape and its people. While the earliest settlers tended to comprise young male recruits as part of groups on conquest and settlement expeditions, the composition of Spanish emigration to America seems to have changed by the mid-sixteenth century. Emigrants now tended to come from non-elite urban groups, comprising artisans and small-tradesmen. 

One of the key features of Spanish emigration to America in this period is the significant presence of women. In the podcast Dr Collins and Dr Almorza discuss Spanish women on transatlantic voyages in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

'The Struggle for the South Atlantic: The Armada of the Strait of Magellan, 1581-1584' with Carla Rahn Phillips.

Carla Rahn Phillips is Union Pacific Professor Emerita in Comparative Early Modern History at the University of Minnesota. Following retirement after 44 years at the University of Minnesota, she moved to central Texas, where she is an adjunct member of the History Department at the University of Texas, Austin. She is also associated with the San Diego Maritime Museum and the University of California, San Diego.

Throughout her career, her research has focused on the economic, social, and maritime history of Spain in the early modern period. She has published a significant number of books, articles and book chapters, including Six Galleons for the King of Spain: Imperial Defense in the Early Seventeenth Century, published in 1986, The Worlds of Christopher Columbus, co-authored with Professor William D. Phillips, and The Treasure of the San José: Death at Sea in the War of the Spanish Succession. She has also translated a number of works into English, including Pablo Emilio Pérez-Mallaina’s Spain's Men of the Sea: The Daily Life of Crews on the Indies Fleets in the Sixteenth Century, as well as her latest work, The Struggle for the South Atlantic: The Armada of the Strait, 1581-1584, published for the Hakluyt Society in 2016.

The Spanish Armada sailed for the Straits of Magellan under Don Diego Flores de Valdés in 1581, and came at a crucial juncture in global politics. Philip II of Spain had assumed the crown of Portugal and its overseas empire, and Francis Drake’s daring peacetime raids had challenged the dominance of Spain and Portugal in the Americas. The armada was intended to ensure the loyalty of Portuguese Brazil; bolster its defences against hostile native peoples, and English and French pirates and interlopers; and fortify and settle the Strait of Magellan to prevent further incursions into the Pacific.

Previous accounts of the Armada of the Strait have largely reflected the writings of Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa, governor-designate for the planned colony at the Strait, who blamed all the misfortunes of the enterprise on Diego Flores de Valdés, but Professor Phillips’s recent edition of Pedro de Rada’s account present a very different version of the expedition, which challenge long-standing conclusions regarding the place of Sarmiento and Flores in Spanish history and the accomplishments of a long-forgotten armada sent into the terrifying waters of the South Atlantic.

'Moriscos, Enslaved Children, and Litigating for Liberty in sixteenth-century Spain' with Dr Stephanie Cavanaugh.

Dr. Stephanie Cavanaugh is a historian of the early modern Spanish empire focusing on conversion, religious cultures, and the social and legal histories of sixteenth-century Castile. She earned her PhD in History at the University of Toronto in 2016. She is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Early Modern Conversions project at McGill University in Montréal. She has recently been appointed as the Sir John Elliot Junior Research Fellow in Spanish History at Oxford University. 

Her article “Litigating for Liberty: enslaved Morisco children in sixteenth-century Valladolid” was published in the Winter 2017 edition of Renaissance Quarterly. Her book project, currently under revision, is 'The Morisco Problem and the Politics of Conversion in Early Modern Spain'. She analyzes the gendered dimensions of Morisco legal agency in her article “In defense of community: Morisca women in sixteenth-century Valladolid,” which will appear in the forthcoming edited collection Women and Community in medieval and early modern Iberia (University of Nebraska Press).

(KEPU) Stephanie Cavanaugh - Moriscos, Enslaved Children & Litigating Liberty in 16th century Spain

Petition and Response: Spanish America and the Council of the Indies in the 16th Century with Dr Adrian Masters (UT Austin).

Adrian Masters is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Texas at Austin's Institute for Historical Studies. He defended his dissertation in May 2018 at UT Austin's Department of History under the supervision of Professor Jorge Cañizares-Esguerra. 

His research focuses on 16th-century Spanish imperial bureaucracy, racial formations, and state knowledge. He is currently co-authoring a book with Jorge Cañizares-Esguerra, entitled The Radical Spanish Empire (under contract with Harvard University Press). He is also working on his own book, tentatively entitled Empire of Petitioners: Creating the Law in the 1500s Spanish Empire, and he has a forthcoming article in the August edition of the Hispanic American Historical Review, called "A Thousand Invisible Architects: Vassals, the Petition and Response System, and the Creation of Spanish Imperial Caste Legislation."

In this podcast Adrian and series host Edward Collins discuss the petition and response system that has been central to Adrian's work on Spanish imperial bureaucracy, part of what he calls a ‘responsive regime’ – that is, a largely passive state that relied almost entirely on reports and requests of a huge range of subjects. This arrangement enabled the participation of almost anyone in the imperial system from the bottom up, and constructed the profoundly productive bureaucratic and social mechanics of the Spanish Empire, which incubated phenomena we associate with modernity today.

Mestizaje and the Frontiers of Race and Caste in Colonial Mexico with Professor Ben Vinson III (Case Western Reserve).

Professor Ben Vinson III is Provost and Executive Vice President at Case Western Reserve University at Cleveland, Ohio. He is also a Professor of History at Case Western’s Department of History. 

Professor Vinson is a historian of Latin America whose scholarship focuses on colonial Mexico, with particular emphasis on race and the African presence in Mexico. He is the author and editor of a number of works, including Bearing Arms for His Majesty: The Free‐Colored Militia in Colonial Mexico (published in 2001), Flight: The Life of Virgil Richardson, A Tuskegee Airman in Mexico (published in 2004), Black Mexico: Race and Society from Colonial to Modern Times, co‐edited with Matthew Restall and published in 2009, and Africans to Colonial Spanish America, co‐edited with Sherwin K. Bryant and Rachel O’Toole, and published in 2012.

His most recent work, Before Mestizaje: Lobos, Moriscos, Coyotes and the Frontiers of Race and Caste in Colonial Mexico (Cambridge University Press) is the subject of episode 18 of History Hub's podcast series – ‘Kingdom, Empire and Plus Ultra: conversations on the history of Portugal and Spain, 1415-1898'.

Before Mestizaje is an examination of race and caste in colonial Mexico, and opens new dimensions on the history of these issues in Latin America by examining what Vinson refers to as ‘extreme’ caste groups in Mexico. Through examining the lives and experiences of these groups and others, the work seeks a deeper understanding between the idea of Mestizaje and the colonial caste system, by arguing that if we are to understand the concept of Mestizaje, we must understand earlier forms of racial mixture, hybridity, and elasticity that served as its precursor in the Spanish colonial world.

(KEPU) Ben Vinson - Mestizaje and the Frontiers of Race and Caste in Colonial Mexico

Palmira Fontes da Costa is Assistant Professor in Historiography, History of Science and Bioethics at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCT).

Her main research interests are the history of medicine and natural history, science, medicine and the Portuguese Empire and the history of the medical book in the early modern period. Originally a biochemist by training, Professor Costa received a Ph.D in the History of Science from the University of Cambridge in 2000, working on The Experience of the Singular at the Royal Society of London in the Eighteenth Century.

Professor Costa is a Member of the Interuniversity Centre of History of Science and Technology (CIUHCT), a centre that brings together historians of science, technology and medicine from the two major universities in Lisbon, the University of Lisbon and the New University of Lisbon, or NOVA. She is also an Associate Member of the Portuguese Centre for Global History (CHAM) at NOVA. She is the author of a number of books and articles, including The Singular and the Making of Knowledge at the Royal Society of London in the Eighteenth Century, published in 2009, and the editor a number of works, including Percursos na Historia do Livro Médico 1450-1800 or Trajectories on the History of the Medical Book, 1450-1800, co-edited with Adelino Cardoso and published in 2011, and Medicine, Trade and Empire: Garcia de Orta’s Colloquies on the Simples and Drugs of India (1563) in Context, published in 2015.

On the 12th March 1534, Garcia de Orta left Lisbon for India, taking with him his brief experience as a lecturer in Natural Philosophy at the University of Lisbon, a medical education at the universities of Salamanca and Alcalá de Henares as well as some years of medical practice in Portugal. At the time of Orta’s departure, Portugal had seen the growth of its empire in the East. His departure also occurred shortly after the establishment of the Inquisition in Portugal in 1531, an event that would prove fateful for for Orta due to his Jewish ancestry.

It was in Goa, the capital of the Portuguese empire of the East, that Orta developed most of his activities, establishing a successful medical and commercial practice in materia medica and precious stones. He also acted as the physician of governors and viceroys and, for some time, as Chief Physician of the Military Hospital of Goa. Orta’s lifelong project to accumulate knowledge on Eastern materia medica later materialized in his pioneering book, the Colóquios dos simples e drogas da India, or the Colloquies on the simples and drugs of India, published in 1563, primarily a medical and botanical book. But while publication of the Colloquies can be seen as the high point in Orta’s life, it also marks a downward personal trajectory for him marked by poor health and monetary difficulties. He died in 1568, and  year after his death, his family was persecuted severely and his sister Catarina, who by now was also living in Goa, was condemned and burned alive on charges of Judaism. Under torture, members of Orta’s family admitted that he had been a crypto Jew which led to his posthumous auto de fé in 1580. As a result, the remains of Orta’s body were exhumed and publicly burned.

Dr. François Soyer is a Senior Lecturer in Late Medieval and Early Modern History at the University of New England (Armidale, NSW, Australia). From January 2012 until early 2016, he was a Partner Investigator with the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions at the University of Adelaide and then an Associate Professor in Late Medieval and Early Modern History at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom between 2015 and 2018. 

He has published a number of books and articles, including The Persecution of the Jews and Muslims of Portugal: King Manuel I and the End of Religious Tolerance (1496-7), published in 2007, Popularizing Anti-Semitism in Early Modern Spain and its Empire. Francisco de Torrejoncillo and the Centinela contra Judíos (1674), published in 2014, and most recently, Antisemitic Conspiracy Theories in the Early Modern Iberian World: Narratives of Fear and Hatred, published in 2019. 

He is currently working on the origins, development and impact of the Antisemitic Ritual Murder and Blood Libel legends in Spain, focusing especially on the Blood Libel cases of San Dominguito de Val and the Holy Child of La Guardia.

In episode 20 of History Hub's podcast series – ‘Kingdom, Empire and Plus Ultra: conversations on the history of Portugal and Spain, 1415-1898' Dr. Soyer discusses antisemitism in medieval and early modern Iberia, specifically some forged documents that purported to be communications between Jews in Spain and Constantinople with series host Dr Edward Collins.
