Starman 2025 (excerpt)

"Fantasy in A" is a selected piece in a call for Vox Novus 60x60 Pianoforte Mix (2012).

Along with the FAZ-A1~A8 piano sounds, directly recorded my sigh & pencil sounds were edited and all factors moved only in A pitch. In order to realize the main rhythm, I splitted & re-arrayed the FAZ-piano stereo samples (provided by (Chicago Pianoforte Foundation) according to the tempo & duration of this samples (short-noped- Ped). After that, the editted FAZ-fnailsonStrings3 appears likes the bridge between the past and now.

In A (2012)

As reading creatures, we ingest words, and we are made of words. Especially, we may be explorers advancing through its pages, as well as the worms which devour the words and phrases in each page. In this context, this piece represents the invisible quest in wandering adrift which readers may virtually confronts inside the poetic short verses in Han Kang’s fiction 『The White Book』. Striving to create a surreal sonic world in which the real life and imaginary death coexist, this piece audibly considers the chain of metaphors that have described readers and their relationships to hidden text-that-is-the-world. In particular, this is an aural representation of a resonant space that evokes certain memories, ambiguous emotions, the contagiousness of fear based on the hidden tacit gestures in『The White Book』.

This work 'Mirage' focuses on the acoustic realization of fragmentary images of mirage on the bleak desert. Chasing the traces of virtual aural journey, a portion of sounds gradually converge into the variation form of Gayageum (Korean traditional string instrument) through the panning.

Hidden agenda (2011)

The twentieth century gave us to ability to dislocate sounds in time as well as in space. Especially invention of digital processing skills facilitated ‘Schizophonia’ which means separation between an original sound and its electroacoustical reproduction named by R.Murray Schaffer. In this context, this piece ‘Habits of 0&1’ reflects the Schizophonia in order to represent the invisible digital relationship including conversations in our isolated daily life. By means of delay feedback and panning effect, tiny grains of sound components describes the auditory realization of fragmentary ‘communications’ with conversations which are separated and disconnected each other easily, like ‘0 and 1(off & on)’. Its basic idea was inspired by Georges Aperghis’s piece “Retrouvailles” which contains various metaphors for communication through the two men’s body action and voice performance. This work reminded me of ‘pingpong’ game between two people with small talk and jokes. Depending on development of pingpong ball sound transformation, this piece has narrative arcs which are linked in a mixed form of fragmented components and played with the ground voice modulated by using Audiosculpt. In the process of finding ‘breakthrough’ of conversations, the first and the last parts of this piece form symmetrical structure with respect to stationery sounds.

This piece ‘Snapshots’ represents the very short impression and feelings at the moment, just like taking 'Snapshots'. Especially focusing on his friend's mouth, voice, intonation and conversations, he directly recorded the most of the sounds (Metronome, Female voice, recorder & triangle instrument etc.) and C-sound programming. Through the synthesis and frequency modulation with audiosculpt & audacity, he tried to describe totally soulscape.

'Tag' for acousmatic represents the scattered pieces of memories just like tag on cyberspace. In daily routine, stuffed times and memories are stamped on our mind as individual 'tag' which consists of some words. However, it means the sort of stigma when we remind someone unconsciously, at the same time. In consequence, the whole process leads to crack between human relationships with misunderstanding from 'Tag'. This piece focuses on the gesture of moving sounds symbolize the direction of memories. Especially, the materials consisting of synthesized sounds and field recordings in this piece are mainly exposed in droned and fragmented format. As the work progresses, such sonic materials are gradually transformed by means of filtering, time stretch and panning effect editing. The vocal part of this piece is characterized by drone voices symbolizing the hidden emotions and desires of human beings. Such drone voices are composed of Korean traditional vocal style which expresses feelings of lost.

Tag (2014)

The viral word in media shapes our sense of the world, of the scale and color and character of our problems. It functions as the parasitic organism which frames and affects how we think. Sometimes, it is transmitted as splendid hallucination invading our nervous system. This work 'Enigma’ highlights the perceptional context in which the stream of self- consciousness is intoxicated with the viral word induced-hallucinations.

Sound Story Creator

Hoyong Lee (b.Seoul, South Korea) is a composer, sound artist and writer. His pieces have been invited and presented in numerous world-renowned music festivals and international conferences in many countries.  He is an Award of Distinction Winner in Matera Intermedia Festival (MA/IN Festival 2016, Italy). He received a Master of Music degree majoring in composition for electroacoustic and instrumental music in Hanyang University. Prior to that, he studied Korean Languages & Literature with Culture Contents at Hanyang University (BA 2010).  With a liberal arts background from undergraduate studies, his experimental sonic practice has explored various ways of storytelling techniques on digital platforms with human voice and electroacoustic environment. His works are mostly based on the creative narrative structure blurring boundaries between noise, pitch and various tones of sounds under natural/electroacoustic environment.  He also gained recognitions as the first place winner in X-RAY FM Radio (Portland, USA) Storytelling Contest Prize in Portland, as an experimental sound storytelling. Executing diverse intermedia projects, he published his compositional autobiography book "소리, 세상을 담다(Sound the world)”, and he has been collaborated with Gwangju national science museum in Art-Science Festival since 2021 as a composer and contents planner. His intention is always to raise consciousness by using the media and audio. Especially he is interested in the increasingly blurry boundaries between word, songs, and poetry such as any kinds of languages and art forms including voice expression of oral storytelling. His creative art world was introduced in KBS 1 FM Radio (97.3Mhz in Seoul) interview programs.
