The 39th International Computer Music Conference 2013 (Perth, Australia)

This work 'Mirage' focuses on the acoustic realization of fragmentary images of mirage on the bleak desert. Chasing the traces of virtual aural journey, a portion of sounds gradually converge into the variation form of Gayageum (Korean traditional string instrument) through the panning.

'Tag' for acousmatic represents the scattered pieces of memories just like tag on cyberspace. In daily routine, stuffed times and memories are stamped on our mind as individual 'tag' which consists of some words. However, it means the sort of stigma when we remind someone unconsciously, at the same time. In consequence, the whole process leads to crack between human relationships with misunderstanding from 'Tag'. This piece focuses on the gesture of moving sounds symbolize the direction of memories. Especially, the materials consisting of synthesized sounds and field recordings in this piece are mainly exposed in droned and fragmented format. As the work progresses, such sonic materials are gradually transformed by means of filtering, time stretch and panning effect editing. The vocal part of this piece is characterized by drone voices symbolizing the hidden emotions and desires of human beings. Such drone voices are composed of Korean traditional vocal style which expresses feelings of lost.

Sound Story Creator

Hoyong Lee (b.Seoul, South Korea) is a composer, sound artist and writer. His pieces have been invited and presented in numerous world-renowned music festivals and international conferences in many countries.  He is an Award of Distinction Winner in Matera Intermedia Festival (MA/IN Festival 2016, Italy). He received a Master of Music degree majoring in composition for electroacoustic and instrumental music in Hanyang University. Prior to that, he studied Korean Languages & Literature with Culture Contents at Hanyang University (BA 2010).  With a liberal arts background from undergraduate studies, his experimental sonic practice has explored various ways of storytelling techniques on digital platforms with human voice and electroacoustic environment. His works are mostly based on the creative narrative structure blurring boundaries between noise, pitch and various tones of sounds under natural/electroacoustic environment.  He also gained recognitions as the first place winner in X-RAY FM Radio (Portland, USA) Storytelling Contest Prize in Portland, as an experimental sound storytelling. Executing diverse intermedia projects, he published his compositional autobiography book "소리, 세상을 담다(Sound the world)”, and he has been collaborated with Gwangju national science museum in Art-Science Festival since 2021 as a composer and contents planner. His intention is always to raise consciousness by using the media and audio. Especially he is interested in the increasingly blurry boundaries between word, songs, and poetry such as any kinds of languages and art forms including voice expression of oral storytelling. His creative art world was introduced in KBS 1 FM Radio (97.3Mhz in Seoul) interview programs.
