Gilles Peterson-endorsed Bristolian, Typesun, makes his next chess move following on from a queue of primo productions over the last few years. "The PL", which featured the softly softly croons of an anonymous vocalist, was an undisputed 2013 jewel. "Water Song" was a swaddling pool of Latin loveliness; so good we had to take a dive ourselves. Now he's recruited MOBO-award winning jazz quartet Empirical’s Lewis Wright (vibraphone) and top guitar session player Miles James alongside a group of Bristol’s finest musicians for "Make It Right". Infused with smoke-tinted funk and pinned down by Typesun’s finely-honed production chops, it's the ideal mid-night foot-shifter.

Two years ago I played at Studio 9 in Vilnius, Lithuania. The following day I missed my flight home and ended up spending an extra day, which gave me a chance to explore the city with my friend Linus, who took me to the Contemporary Art Centre. It was there I spotted a book named ‘Rojus’, that Linus told me translated as ‘Paradise’. The word and striking cover of the book stuck in my mind. A few days after returning home, I turned on to a National Geographic documentary named ‘Designed To Dance’, explaining the courtship rituals of Birds Of Paradise. As I watched, i jokingly began drawing similarities between these birds’ attempts to captivate and impress the opposite sex with dance, and the way strangers try to attract one another in clubs and interact on the dance floor. This gave me the idea of creating a record of functional club music, sequenced as if it were a club night, from doors to closing, using samples of these Birds Of Paradise and their habitat. Thus, Rojus.

This wasn’t a song directly about Brexit, but it was being written going into the vote in the UK.  At the same time, debates were taking place in the USA about Donald Trump’s potential leadership campaign to be President.

I’ve always had a fascination with political ideas and how they shape the messages that are given to us.  Clearer, throughout history, there are those who have seized upon a given set of circumstances and had the ability to persuade others about the path to follow, sometimes for good and other times with extreme consequences.

The lyrics reflect a feeling that traditional politics are slowly being rejected, but it’s not certain what will replace them.  It’s not supposed to be pessimistic, but asks the question about what comes next – and whether we are headed towards a time that makes it more likely that those with more extreme ideologies will capture the hearts and minds of more and more people.

Back in stock, the 2012 debut full-length from Austin-based electronic quartet S U R V I V E is available once again with yellow and black alternate artwork. A fresh U.S. repress is in high demand for this modern classic, as the band enjoys a recent surge in notoriety on the heels of members Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein’s soundtrack work on the hit Netflix series Stranger Things. Recorded from 2010-2012 at the band’s own Omniverse Studios in Austin, this record chronicles the early days of the group as they developed and defined their familiar yet original style of dark soundscapes. 

This record’s full spectrum of synth-based composition returns to LP and cassette, with CD and limited clear and black-colored vinyl editions available for the first time. S U R V I V E ’ s debut full-length marks the culmination of countless sessions recording and crafting a remarkable balance of songwriting and experimentation. The band’s signature sound is a combination of vintage and modern synthesizers, recorded live and carefully processed to draw character out of every enriched sound wave before joining the mix. 

Originally released in 2012 on Berlin-based Mannequin Records, 
S U R V I V E ’ s premiere is a fusion of reserved minimalism and lucid hooks. Underlined by the band’s uncompromising standards in sound design, this album maintains a damaged quality that is nuanced and cohesive across all nine emotive tracks. Ambient pieces such as “To Light Alone I Bow” and “Deserted Skies” are beautiful hybrids of harmony and tension that represent the record as a multifaceted work of both mood and melody. In contrast, the cold and brutally propulsive pair of singles “Hourglass” and “Omniverse” are strikingly addictive, making their way onto the soundtrack of the 2014 feature horror film The Guest, directed by Adam Wingard.

Having already debuted on the Pinkman main label, Identified Patient now steps up for the Pinkman “Broken Dreams” series for your stripped back content. The whole EP is furnished with the sinister and commanding vocals of Sophie du Palais, also known as “Vrouwe Fataal,” creating an infectious vortex of panic and scare to abort your dreams.
 
Throughout the release, hazy percussion is carefully seasoned with the bitter synth lines and guitar riffs from Lasznkioff. The first track, “Peaceful Panic” is in full seduction and fetish mode, setting the scene for the better corners. “Sleep Without Rest” violently tightens up the leather and gives you your kicks for thrills. The EP ends with frenzy: messed up intermezzos with Lasznikoff, mixing up an 808 with his destructive guitar rig and, as he states, “everything is done.”
