Noémi Büchi’s debut album ‘Matter’ captures the tension between growth and decay, consonance and dissonance, mirroring Büchi’s own catharsis through music. Her most personal material to date, ‘Matter’ is an opus of refined, sculpted beauty, one that aims to blur the distinction between ephemerality and physicality. Inspired by late romantic classical music and early 20th century contemporary music, ‘Matter’ is driven by the compositional methodologies of Igor Stravinsky, Alexander Skrjabin, Gustav Mahler and György Ligeti to modern sound forms, adapting and expanding upon their ideas in an awe-inspiring exploration of cutting-edge potency and tactility.

Büchi structures the electronic works that constitute ‘Matter’ in movements, stratifying myriad instrumental parts like the constituent sections of an orchestra. During her work on the album, Büchi engaged in extensive research, obsessively studying specific chords and progressions, and searching for transcendent intonations with resonant properties; complexions of sound with the ability to connect with the listener’s body. Transforming our inner worlds into zones of suspension and levitation, Büchi exposes the listener to intoxicating slipstreams of sound. Prominent voices ascend, tectonic disturbances threaten the foundations, perception and sensation becomes subject to elemental countercurrents and inversions. ‘Matter’ illustrates the fraught pursuit of momentary equilibrium, and makes the fragility of euphoria tangible.

BIO:
Composer & sound artist Noémi Büchi creates electronic, symphonic maximalism. Her music is defined by delicate electronic-orchestral forms and textural rhythms. She strives for a combination of harmonic and dissonant sonorities, to evoke both intellectual and emotional euphoria. Büchi has appeared on the Light of Other Days and Visible Dinner labels, and is now an affiliate of -OUS, releasing ‘Hyle’ her debut EP on the label in spring 2022. As well as her solo output, Noémi Büchi is currently working with Feldermelder on their collaborative project Musique Infinie. Their debut album will also be released via -OUS in the near future.

pre-orders available now via IMPREC.comIn 1970 Harry Bertoia had been developing his sonic sculptures for over ten years. He had only been composing/recording for two years and the four long pieces chosen for this CD find him starting to arrive at the sonic forms he had been searching for.

Hints Of Things To Come is one of the most unique and melodic pieces discovered so far in the Bertoia tape archive. In this piece we hear him slowly create and articulate a musical riff.  Bertoia builds this phrase patiently until the composition reaches an intense climax where the riff is played heavily and distinctly.

7 ½ & 7 ½ Combined, another historic standout, is one of the earliest examples of Bertoia overdubbing by playing a tape and then performing along to the playback.

This CD is defined by ambient passages, long drones, gongs that sound like whales, shimmering harmonics and the feeling of an artist searching for sounds deep within his own sonic sculpture.

Hajú is an old Moravian word that loosely translates to “hush hush”.

With the lead single and title track from his upcoming album on Slowcraft, Tomáš' weaves together acoustic elements, soft synthetic manoeuvres and evocative field recordings to spellbinding effect.

Assisted by Pavel Rajmic on strings and Marie Puttnerová on vocals the Czech composer and field recordist has perfectly captured the spirit of both his homeland and the season.

A moderate wind is sweeping in the high reeds of Makholma shore. Down near the waterline there's absolute calm. The dense reed is working like a perfect windshield made by nature itself. In the background one lonely Whooper Swan is yoking in a rather same manner than in late october when migrating begins.

Recorded in a dry river bed on the Limpopo river at around 5.45am, about an hour after dawn, on the 28th of November, 2014. 
The dominant birds in this recording are a group of Natal Spurfowl's (Pternistis natalensis), other species calling include: Woodland Kingfisher (Halcyon senegalensis), African Hoopoe (Upupa africana), Red-eyed Dove (Streptopelia semitorquata), Bearded Woodpecker (Dendropicos namaquus), Tropical Boubou (Laniarius aethiopicus), Green Woodhoopoe (Phoeniculus purpureus), Egyptian Goose (Alopochen aegyptiaca), African Fish Eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer), Southern Boubou (Laniarius ferrugineus). There are quite a few other birds calling that I haven't identified yet, mainly all the tweety birds which I always find difficult to identify.
Recorded at Mmabolela Reserve, Limpopo, South Africa, during the 'Sonic Mmabolela' residency organized by Francisco Lopez & James Webb, many thanks to everyone involved in the residency!

Morning At Umzumbi

A few cicadas (possibly Oxypleura quadraticollis) call together, slowly ascending to an incredibly ear-piercing chorus in which microtones blend in and out of each other to create a surreal high pitched drone which soon descends to quiet. They did this on and off for about an hour with intervals of 5 minutes or so between. This is the last time they called before they fell silent until dawn the next morning, in which they called so loud that they almost distorted my microphones, it was about 2-3 times as loud as the climax in this recording! In the background you can hear the rhythmic chopping sounds of a group of African Scops Owls (Otus senegalensis) calling in the gallery forest by the river bed.
Recorded in a dry section of the Limpopo River, at Mmabolela Reserve, Limpopo, South Africa, around 11.30pm on the 24th of November, 2014.

Cicadas In The Middle Of The Night

A composition made from sounds recorded recently in Kiama, during a short break while I was heading down to Murramarang National Park on the south coast of NSW. 
A cool Autumn wind sings melodiously through the wires at the viewing platform for the famous Kiama Blowhole, which was exploding large amounts of coastal water out as I recorded this, surrounded by many spectators. Layered with hydrophone recordings I got in a large rock pool a hundred or so metres away. These two recordings were gathered within 30 minutes of each other and since they are so close I feel that they are intimately related. They live side by side every day, yet we would never be able to hear them together without the aid of listening devices such as these microphones.
Recorded between 2:30 and 3:00pm on the 28th of March, 2015.

These recordings are done in AB stereo with omnidirectional microphones. With this technique everything in the field will be equally meaningful, even the silence behind the microphones. That's why you should use headphones!
