Which kind of woods sing this song more - a real (natural) forest or a tree plantation (most common ecosystem in Finland)? Natural trees are more infected by Fungi, hence assumably more moist. It is the freezing water inside trees which causes the bangs. On the other hand, cultivated trees are more solid. This recording collection is from nature protection area. I have a house in cultivated woods, and there soundscape like this is naturally common on equal Centigrades. Maybe mushroomy trees are more flexible and do not explode as often.

Arctic Geese migrating - 4/10/2020 - Makholma Night

Wednesday night, playing with loops, one seven beats long, the other eight, then layering occasional accent notes. Fade in and out just turning the knob on the amp once the loops were left to their looping. Recorded to phone put in front of the amp. Not sure why the eight-beat loop is more prominent than the seven-beat one, except perhaps that it's in 4/4 so the brain registers it more easily. Also not sure about that one hiccup at :46 seconds. Something suddenly went out of alignment and then came just as suddenly back into alignment. The bit at the very end isn't a tape cassette stopping. It just sounds like that.

Snoring Sea Ice - 28/1/2021 - Loukkeennokka Shore

This is a compilation from an over night recording in Kirpakka woods with 15 small cracks in chronological order and as last a bigger bang from one long recording earlier in february.

I had the microphones out in Kirpakka small preservation area over night (from sunset to midday) during the coldest days when temp went down to -20C.  There was practically no sign of life except some road noise and machines from a nearby farm.  Daytime there were a few Crows and two Ravens, one Great Spotted Woodpecker and in early night the distant call of a Tengman's Owl.  

One recording of 18 hours earlier didn't result in any sound of life except a very weak Crow at 11 am. and the big crack in the end of this recording.

There seems to be a great loss of tits and crossbills in Finnish forests today.

But the trees were keeping a good amount of cracks and pops, specially in the early night when the temperature change was as fastest.

Ploughing aural fields in remote North.

Field recordist, bird watcher and a digitized former darkroom rat living in little Makholma village on the West Coast of Finland by the Baltic Sea - 61N 21E

These recordings are done in AB stereo with omnidirectional microphones. With this technique everything in the field will be equally meaningful, even the silence behind the microphones. That's why you should use headphones!
