A smoothed out, catchy little downtempo bobber from a cool late-winter night in The Vault.  Makaya bounces on a flammed rimshot, Abrams jumps in quickly with some nice bass chords, Justefan colors the progression with his singing vibraphone harmonies, and Marquis tops it all off with a gorgeous trumpet melody and solo verse.

In June of 2022, Zahir began to bridge his directing craft and musical upbringing by executively curating and releasing ‘From a Potter’s Hands’, a musical compilation with artists such as Wakai, Nelovesbias, Ezy and others. Since this release, he has met and studied under major influences such as Saba, Halsey, and Pharrell among others. Taking these lessons along with him, he crafted his debut musical single ‘Unusual’ bringing in burgeoning artists, Phoenix James and Wiseboy Jeremy, to craft the perfect R&B/Alt Hip Hop vocal introduction labeled by many as a “stunning depiction”. Unusual is the first single off of his widely anticipated project debut releasing later this year.

The third installment of our storm-mix series recorded while watching the blizzard roar outside of our little love box. 

The series first began with "Magic Corner" in 2011 when NYC shut down in anticipation of Hurricane Irene. We decided to record a follow up mix during the next city-wide shutdown due to Super Storm Sandy during which we recorded "This Is the Place." You can thank the Blizzard of 2016 for this one. Celebrating Light In The Attic’s 10 year anniversary in 2012, we are releasing a series of very special colored vinyl 7”s and digital downloads. The series features contemporary artists covering a track reissued by Light In The Attic on the A-side, plus the original version on the B-side.

Charles Bradley – known as “The Screaming Eagle of Soul”, and for good reason – tackles ‘I’ll Slip Away’ by one of Light In The Attic’s big success stories, Rodriguez. Dating back three years before his defining Cold Fact album, ‘I’ll Slip Away’ was the Sugarman’s 1967 debut single for Impact Records. In Rodriguez’s hands, it’s shuffling, tropicalia-tinged folk. In Bradley’s hands and backed by the inimitable Menahan Street Band, it’s a vintage soul stomper.

A side is produced by Thomas Brenneck and recorded at Dunham Sound Studio, Brooklyn, NY, July 2012. B side features the original Rodriguez version as remastered by Dave Cooley.

Dark, triumphant and mysterious; the new Menahan Street band 45 single "Light's Out" conjures images of hard-fighting pugilists battling it out under a bare bulb, of a matador's graceful execution of a lumbering bull, of sweat, romance and victory.  Brought in by a rollicking, almost tipsy, Hammond melody and backed by a smoky smooth guitar line, “Keep Coming Back” eventually erupts into a swanky nightlife anthem, complete with red velvet curtains and a garnished highball.

There is something simultaneously both brand-new and retro about 'All News Is Good News’ - the debut album from Melbourne's instrumental soul group Surprise Chef. It sounds like something dreamt up by lo-fi cousins of David Axelrod and Janko Nilovic, with dramatic Library-music-esque cinematic arrangements echoing both light and dark, delving into moments of dissonance and positivity. There is a meticulous education of 1970’s soul on display that touches on the legacies of the great composer / producers, yet at the same time, this is a truly contemporary record that could have only been made now. 

The first limited pressing of 'All News Is Good News’ was released on the band's own 'College Of Knowledge' imprint in November 2019. It slipped rapidly into the collective consciousness of underground music lovers around the world, with all copies selling out within a week and becoming a firm favourite at Mr Bongo HQ in the process. We felt Surprise Chef had made something very special, a future-classic, and that needed to be heard well beyond those lucky enough to have bagged those limited first copies.

Formed at the end of 2017, Surprise Chef have grown within the fertile, creative, and supportive Melbourne music scene. Whilst the band is comprised of four core members, the album features friends and family as guest instrumentalists on flute, saxophone, vibraphone, congas, and assorted percussion; all adeptly recorded by engineer Henry Jenkins from the band Karate Boogaloo. The warm-raw-authenticity of the album was captured in the recordings live to tape over a handful of sessions in the band’s home studio in Melbourne’s inner-northern suburb of Coburg. As band member Lachlan Stuckey explains “All of the music we record is tracked live to tape, simply because so many of the records we love most were made that way".

The results are a captivating journey of instrumental cinematic-soul that will connect with the hardened Axelrod, Truth & Soul, El Michels Affair, and Daptone's fans, as well as the open-minded first-time listener. We are very excited to share this first slice of Surprise Chef’s world, with plenty more magic from these guys coming around the corner very soon.
