Lead single Bad Man begins proceedings with a groove so gangsta it makes G Unit look like the Jonas Brothers, whereas Selfish offers 2025’s best screw face inducing synth line. Changer switches things up with a futuristic soundscape before the drop obnoxiously slaps you around the chops and fails to apologise. 

Feel the Vibe comes in as cold as the arctic circle with its hypnotic swing, before Play flips proceedings to a technical playground of shaman sorcery - with EP closer Perfect gradually building to a wall of dub influenced bass weight and reverb drenched rim clicks.

Los Angeles based Jordan Hill a.k.a no puls has been slowly amassing an impressive catalogue of tribal inspired, future-facing compositions heavily rooted in the ‘beat-scene’ provenance his home town & its famed ambassadors have immortalised. Alongside his two presciently named pitbulls Onyx & Quasimoto, Jordan - originally of Orange County - is a resident of the Highland Park area of L.A; a vibrant nerve-centre of instrumental hip-hop talent including members of Low-end Theory organisation Team Supreme and the Courteous family collective - the latter of which no puls has been a long-standing member of.

In a naturally Californian fashion, his music is the coming together of psychedelic cosmic leanings, stoned grooves & high technology. Much like other members of the Courteous Family, no puls harnesses a distinctively low-fi crunchiness to his music worthy of a comparison to the Toe Rag Studios aesthetic. It’s analog futurism cut from the same cloth as Danger Mouse & Madlib, tailored to fit the post-dubstep landscape.

In this inaugural outing beyond the Bandcamp / Free-to-DL paradigm, an incredible command of both patience & maturity is displayed. In an era of west-coast beat making often characterised by restless technical one-up-manship and bold lurches from one concept to the next, no puls is able to cut through the orthodoxy and channel his efforts into ear worm-orientated structures that develop with restraint yet still glow with technical flair.

“Tongues” E.P drops on 9th March Featuring 4 original compositions, and a guest appearance from Slugabed on the 5th track with his remix of “Fiji Quija”.

The ninth edition of Communication Themes brings fresh names and established regulars together once again for the first steps into a new decade of electronic music.

GALVA's first contribution to the Renraku discography is a strong introduction to his knack for catchy, rhythmically intricate beats. “Midas” pushes this even further with well-seasoned bass design and a hook that completes the groove with class.

DFNKT and VHSCERAL join hands once again for “Roodboy Bowman”, putting deep subs to work underneath an easy rhythm for an impactful combination of their signature styles. Aggressive, degraded basses gradually raise the energy to a solid level as an ode to Renraku’s ringleader.

PULSEYE shapes new areas in classic Renraku territory with aggressive drums and sharp basses that punch straight through every element of “Materialize”. Vocal chops and countless other carefully mutilated sounds are placed purposefully to keep it fresh over several (much recommended) repeat listens.

HNGIN and KAGE match sound design expertise with a moving, danceable beat easily at home in any club or venue with massive speakers. “Race” creates its own suspenseful, spacious atmosphere though rattling textures and full lows meant to seize and hold attention as the grand finale of Communication Themes Volume 09.

Vhsceral’s sophomore contribution to the Renraku Global Media imprint speaks volumes about where the California-based producer resides in bass music. Me Time is a flowing expedition to the left field of his production on a path shrouded by cloudy textures and thick lows, exploring personality and cognitive dissonance through a diverse sonic palette. It reaches into a deep reflecting pool of sounds and influences and comes away as a robust second step into Vhsceral's perspective on electronic music.

 

Loud, rumbling ambience carries “Middle School” in, starting Me Time off with pizzicato strings forced into holding up a weighty atmosphere. Playful rhythms and instrumentation eventually give way to an authoritative saw lead, pulling everything back together last-minute. "Plosive" dips back and forth between melodic pleasantry and lethargic sound design, and "You Time" follows up with hot-headed aggression capable of melting itself down into a spacious, brooding aura. 

 
"Rekkaturvat" shoves stumbling house drums into a gelatinous sub, leaving this club-ready combination more than prepared for its sound system debut. A chirping top line poking through the surface of a muddily harmonious pool splits up these heady interactions until the song collides with its finish. “Upstairs” and “Me Time” bring groove, melody, and flow together, first stretching out towards distant trains of thought and then reassociating just before this release's conclusion.

 
Vhsceral gels together an auditory rendering of interlaced musical and personal experiences. A pensive self-examination with much ground to cover, this collection represents undervaluation, overthought, and dreary solitude.
