It feels strange to say that an act who have been around for over a decade releasing more than half a dozen albums should be ‘Ones To Watch’ in 2014, but cousins Josh Doherty and Rich Bevan aka Posthuman’s career has never exactly followed the rules.

Originally part of the, then, thriving UK Electronica scene at the start of the new millennium Posthuman instantly made an impression with a series of releases on their own Seed Records imprint, Manchester’s Skam and legendary UK techno label B12 Records, with their debut album picking up plaudits from Pitchfork as "one of the best IDM-oriented albums of 2001" Over the course of the ‘00s the cousins would go on to release several albums experimenting with everything from pure ambience and techno to post-rock, ‘The People’s Republic’ being hailed by DJ Mag as "joining the dots between early Autechre and Mogwai”, and 'Syn Emergence' being hailed by LFO as "one of the best techno albums ever".

All the time though Posthuman still kept at least one foot on the dancefloor throwing the now-near legendary parties such as the series of raves in Aldwych’s disused tube station that featured everyone from Aphex Twin and Luke Vibert to Goldfrapp and S’Express’ Mark Moore - and since 2007 both promoting and holding down a monthly residency at I Love Acid (Corsica Studios).

The past 18 months though has seen Doherty and Bevan fully turn their attention back to the dancefloor releasing a series of 12”s on labels such as Tusk Wax, Balkan Vinyl, and RSI that have caught the attention of DJs like Daniel Avery, Ben Sims, and Disco Bloodbath’s Damon Martin, combining grinding Detroit inspired Techno and bubbling Acid House basslines with icy precision.

Which brings us to the ‘Decompression’ EP - the soundtrack to a corrupted AI system’s final moments, corroded circuits firing and misfiring to produce 4 new tracks of hypnotically dark acid plus a remix from Houndstooth artist House of Black Lanterns. From the abyssal ‘Decompression’ through to the percussive ‘So Cruel’, ‘Back to Acid’s snake like bleeps and onto HOBL’s elegiac remix, this is an EP sure to dominate dance floors from underground bunkers to warehouse raves alike.

The first of two new 12”s to be released on the Bruxelles-via-London imprint Body Work (Waze & Odyssey, LPZ, CVNT and more), the ‘Decompression’ EP arrives hot on the heels on the heels of their remix of Bohemian Groove for New York’s Throne of Blood, and ahead of their upcoming "30 years of Acid" Solid Steel show in April marks another important milestone of this act’s ever evolving career.

Premiere: House Of Black Lanterns - Grey Leather Glass

House Of Black Lanterns is the latest musical project from Dylan Richards, the man behind the King Cannibal and Zilla monikers (on the Ninja Tine and Warp Records labels respectively).  With an album and two singles out in 2013 on the highly respected Houndstooth label, Richards returns with a deadly EP for Hypercolour, backed with a very fine Mosca remix.  

In its Original Mix, ‘The Smack’ is a dense and atmospheric production, the slow pace and chugging bassline evoking shades of early Chicago house but with a thoroughly modern UK twist.  Filled with tension and drama, ‘The Smack’ is a big sounding record that cuts through so many genre sounds from dub techno to dubstep but sounds entirely individual and unique.  

Mosca steps up to the remix, following on from the launch of his new label Not So Much, and remixes for Alland Byallo and Sweatshop Boys.  Taking ‘The Smack’ up to an altogether skanking tempo, Mosca plummets the Basic Channel school of sound for the aptly titled ‘Dread At The Controls’ version.  Spring reverb all over the joint as Mosca works the droning synths and fire & brimstone vibes over a watertight, dub heavy workout.

‘Grey Leather Glass’ takes things up a notch, continuing the HOBL theme of dark & shadowy techno sounds with heaps of drama and sinister twists and turns, like some cinematic score to a Wes Craven slasher epic, and ‘8 Million Stories’ cuts up vocal chops, finger snaps and piano stabs over a brooding house production. Glasgow’s Darkroom Dubs continue on form and add to a gleaming 12-year-old catalogue with another addition to their limited vinyl series courtesy of long-term label friends, Of Norway who make a welcome return. Describing their own sound as ‘like being lost in the woods in Norway’ they have released EPs through labels such as Dialect and Afro Art and now, in the follow up to their ‘Accretion’ LP on Connaisseur Recordings the Norse duo present their ‘Black Desert Disco Cult’ EP: a record that adds further refractions to their deep and foggy catalogue whilst remaining true to their trademark sound.

Road tested by the Darkroom Dubs squad and doing the business in Of Norway’s lauded live set - ‘Blackened Fez’ kicks things off. Galloping hats and dramatic snare whacks scuttle together towards a purposeful, rotating bass pattern before Arabesque guitar tones are filtered in and out of focus. Whining synths bleed then in and add to an accumulating sense of tension before Dame-Music owner Bloody Mary weighs in with a stripped and functional remix that drives armoured 909 drums with a churning sequence. Percussion is deftly handled throughout a rolling groove that keeps the pressure up.

The title track then heads up the B-side and kicks off with a textural synth line darting over thick stabbing bass tones. Mangled acid lines then roll into focus and are propelled by resonance control ahead of an 808 bass pattern and a rapturous synth line guaranteed to do the business on the floor. Hypercolour and Houndstooth affiliate House Of Black Lanterns then offers up a cold yet compelling take on Blackened Fez. Deep and dubby tones are set chugging under atonal drones and delayed percussive knocks that set a rich and tenebrous tone that caps off another fine addition to the Darkroom Dubs series.

Presented on a double CD and digitally, ‘Tessellations’ charts a path from Guy Andrews and Aïsha Devi’s widescreen soundscapes and the offbeat electronic pop of 18+ and Snow Ghosts, through the analogue 4/4 pulse of Marquis Hawkes and Shift Work, to Akkord and Special Request’s visceral re-imagining of hardcore.
