2013 has been a pretty special year for Houndstooth. In December 2012 we were staring down the barrel of a daunting release schedule all giddy from the excitement of it but understandably nervous at the same time. It’s all the same energy though, nerves and excitement and the artists we’ve worked with and released have done more to inspire us and stoke our sense of pride over the past 12 months than anyone or anything else. So as a bit of a thank you to them and as a means of underlining our first year in existence, we asked our roster to remix each other’s music and create something uniquely Houndstooth for the year’s end. 

HTH vs HTH is a 7-track EP that pits the production processes of our artists against one another with Special Request and Akkord tackling each other’s stems whilst Call Super and Second Storey trade tracks alongside interwoven interpretations of House of Black Lanterns and _Unsubscribe_ and a chilling Snow Ghosts cover version.

Searing, tormented darkside f**kery from Miles Whittaker and Sean Canty’s Demdike Stare on their rinse and run Testpressing series. On the A-side ‘Fail’ is a slowly descending panic attack of pealing hi-end frequencies and impending bass doom reaching a pit of noisy no return. On the flip, ‘Null Results’ bruks loose with a scything jungle attack; frantic 16th note hi-hats and cone-crumpling subs laced with a rudeboy mentasm to incite warehouse capoeira. Come test.

Premiere: Shackles 'Move'

Metalheadz rounds off an incredibly successful year with an EP from core label producer Mikal, who also brings some friends along for the ride.  

META013 is a project that shows the versatility of Mikal. His take on the Headz sound includes steam train steppers, halftime dancehall grooves and classic reinforced era jungle. The EP is an expansive project that includes collaborations with Break and Nymfo, from South Country UK across to Holland.

The dancehall and dub parts of Mikal’s armoury are strongly on display here - his contribution to the long lineage of dancehall influenced drum n bass is a confident- take no prisoners attitude,  typical Metalheadz.

The package is broken down as a four track vinyl EP, with an exclusive digital only fifth track. There is also an accompanying video for the lead track. 

The EP is five tracks worth of intent and is the tip of the iceberg for Mikal’s future in terms of sound and presence on the label and we keenly await his next outing.

Wow! Melodica Recordings is one. To celebrate this momentous event I have sent some of our favourite releases on the label to some of our favourite artists, on the label and elsewhere, for a retake, a look back, a flash forward, a new version of the original. It's helped to make the creative family feel that I was after at the start of this process to feel real, we're all swapping ideas and tunes now, helping each other to grow and surprising each other with great new sounds.

So here we are at part two in the series : "Grows Without Bound" on the A-side is a monster; a noisy analogue session ressurected from the burning embers of Industrial and Noise, harnessed into an unstable growl that slowly makes room for a barely-there percussive stumble - think somewhere between Vainio and Nate Young. Over on the flipside "Primitive Equations" takes for inspiration the bare-boned, hyper-tense production of Photek's still devastating "Ni - Ten - Ichi - Ryu",  slugging out feral, steely noise and 'ardcore torque forged by calloused hands and burning minds to cruel, propulsive effect.
