A year and a half after its first release, Pilote, Syrinx Music is back with another V/A release, Ballast. Meanwhile, Syrinx set various events up in the Paris area, and took great care of this new EP. Just as the device it takes its name from, Ballast aims to find a balance in contrast, in line with Syrinx’s aesthetics: an open vision of electronic music, linking both club & experimental dimensions.

On Ballast, this contrast goes with the idea of duality. The A Side of the vinyl (pressed as a dubplate in a very limited edition) gathers three artists of the most adventurous side of the French bass scene. Cyberlife kicks things up with an atmospheric and aerial breakbeat track, which melts into Fechos’ (a member of the SeekSickSound crew) « Fire Famine », which goes for crazy breaks and a self-evolving melody. The founder of Virtual Forest Records, Fluid Matter experiments with grime and trap on « Jagged Peaks », with its minimalist rhythmic structure, hardcore kicks and unsettling melodic lines.

Side B slowly advances towards abstraction and experimentation. Abstraction Mathématique expresses its percussive inventivity with « Il Fait Souvent Le Même Rêve Que Verlaine »’s cinematic atmospherics. Hourvari mixes the double bass with electronics, leaning on the dark side with « Parade », a track that slowly progresses towards drone. The EP comes to an end with Dress Rehearsals, who contribute « Confluences Des Cordes », melting acoustic & electronic sounds, light & darkness, peaceful ambient & noisy outbursts.
Ballast seeks both eclecticism and cohesion, each track flowing, stylistically, towards the next one, while the overall line remains open from breaks to drone, from grime to IDM. This V/A release also comes with an artwork hand-drawn by Cath’rin, which was then transformed through AI. It will soon be following by a new series of solo Eps on Syrinx.

Syrinx Music :

Syrinx Music is a Paris-area based microlabel, founded in 2020 by No3sis and both members of Haxo, around the idea of experimenting with new music formats and open aesthetics linked with digital arts. Syrinx's music aims to be diverse and located in the numerous crossroads between electronic and experimental music, visual and digital arts.

Syrinx seeks to melt styles and genres, blur lines between noise and breakbeat, electroacoustic and bass music, improvised music and techno, thinking about these styles in terms of spectrum, rather than frontiers. Syrinx wants to open borders, play with shades and promote new talents; its aim is exploratory music, that starts with shared references to progress towards the unknown, that plays with hybridation, accident, unforeseen music events. Syrinx was born with the experiences of its co-founders, and wishes to create an open canvas to host the experiences of other artists and listeners.

Syrinx is anchored in such inspirations: noise, cognitive science, accidents in creation & music, sound studies, pop culture, chaos theory, experience and experimentation, no wave, (a)tonal music, networks and graphs, surveillance society, algorithms & filter bubbles.

Syrinx Music is a weird bird, an invitation to surprise and an ode to divergence.

You’ll be able to catch Benk0 at Venue MOT on the 1st April for the first Folly party of the year, playing alongside Otik, Beneath, Ifeoluwa, k means and Folly residents. 

Speaking about his approach to this mix, Benk0 says, “I wanted to explore the eerie, deconstructed and experimental sounds that inspire me , with each blend taking the listener to new and unexpected soundscapes. A mix full of dubbed out, percussive, pumpy and bassy tracks that spam a wide range of different genres and tempos. I wanted to capture the essence of the type of nights i like to attend  and play at, from warm up to peak time.”

An organic asymmetric approach was the basis for the whole aesthetic exploration. A dialogue between repetition and irregularity whose sum is leading into a playful yet dark gloomy nature.

In CREATURE I investigated the relationship between technical knowledge or rather the rigid imagination of an idea to the unpredictable fluidness of creation. Every track sort of becomes a CREATURE that deeply wants to be itself and given that, it feels ultimately brutal wanting it to fit in in any way. It was a deep, dark track already but he's grabbed it and submerged it down into the abyss in a way that only he can. "What attracted me to remixing 'Squares & Triangles' was the sense of mystery. I had never heard of the artist On Man, nor the MC F-M-M-F, and so i had no preconceptions nor obstacles. I loved the fact the vocals provided more questions than answers. And as a fellow freak, in a time where so much music is made to fit blandly into a conformist box, I totally admired the fact this song existed in its own, uncommercial, non-aligned zone.
I just knew as soon as i heard the original, i instantly dug the ice-cold mood and felt I wanted to make it both heavier and deeper simultaneously." ~ The Bug


"F-M-M-F's twisted verbals were hyper-tense and psychotic, so the challenge was to try and intensify the deadly narrative of the lyrics still further...
