Bury Me Alive was one of our favoured children from this album, the track just fell out of us (us being me and Phong, my producer for the album). The first time we heard back we got tingles when the beat drops at the first chorus... ! This track maybe has the most metaphoric lyrics on the album, every sentence describes some angst towards the system that is destroying us..

Evolution grows into the darndest things. Babies who had the ability to recognise a smile on their mother’s face had higher probability to connect with their progenitors on a motion level, resulting in a higher chance to stay alive. The hominids who recognised shapes of both predators and preys between the dense forests lived longer to pass their genes to futures generations.

However, evolution recons that it is better for certain faculties to be developed in excess, than in scarcity. Various perceptive phenomena came as side effects from that excess, which is the case of the Apophenia, the recognition of patterns in random data. Maintaining a motional link with particular notions could also offer evolutive advantage, in a pre-scientific method world. Still, when cognitive fallacies get collective acceptance, they tend to grow stronger and stronger without any room for reasoning. Indeed, it is easier to grasp or chase a familiar concept than acquire updated information that ravishes lifelong personal beliefs. Our only tools to fight this tendency is patience and early education. And so, this is not meant to be a harsh criticism on post-truth, but an explicative sound narrative containing a factual core for why said fallacies and cognitive phenomena are formed.

Burning Pyre ripples outward a new aural 'alloy' for Amulet of Tears  — all filtered through the vapor murmurings of a synthesiser and emerging phonography.  The flux as the respective halves float in the immersive aspect of synth drift & cultivates a new modality as an emblem of modernity by syncretic belief.  The mix remains largely fertile in impressive arrangement of electronic ingenuity.  More broadly, Christopher Macarthur has crafted a graceful approach to contemporary ambient and minimalist works across a number of releases for Opal Tapes, Perfect Aesthetics, Vaagner, Eastern Nurseries and Vienna Press under the moniker Burning Pyre.

Some words from the artist follow - 

The main inspiration of this project is « Amazing Grace », a well-known Christian hymn written in 1772 by the Anglican clergyman and poet John Newton, and still vividly interpreted in the Anglo-Saxon world. The text has been arranged musically with several melodies through past centuries - the most famous one being composed by William Walker around 1835. 

This hymn evokes the remission of sins by faith in God and salvation by grace, themes linked to the personal experience of the writer, former slave ship worker and trader John Newton who became a slave in his turn for 3 years in West Africa. He had, during a violent storm at sea in 1748 while he was rescued from his enslavement, called out to God for mercy. This was the beginning of his spiritual conversion to Christianity. He considered himself later a repentant sinner saved by divine grace.

I composed the EP during Avril 2020 in Paris, during the confinement and the pandemic episode which is still affecting our world and societies. The growing loneliness of my daily life, the emotional and physical distanciation from those I love, combined with a heavy sense of a possible end of mankind, pushed me to read poetry speaking of grace, divine and religious conversions. I stumbled upon « Amazing Grace » on the internet, and behind my screen, felt the urge to compose something uplifting, full of hope and mercy for my specie. Reading the life of John Newton and his progressive repentance, I decided to build a project about the life of this man and my own need of spiritual elevation, facing the fear of death and the perpetual human hesitance between Vice and Vertu.

The beginning and the internationalization of the Black Lives Matter movement after the death and assassination of George Floyd in Houston, May the 25th, gave to the project a new sense - a new interpretation ; a tragic one for sure. More than two centuries later, racism, racial violence and discriminations linked to skin color are still vivid and effective all around the world.

‘Penelope Three’ is the third and final instalment of the Australian-born Brighton-based musician’s trilogy. She completes her ambitious and other-worldly triptych with an album of healing, on which she looks to release herself from fear and into love, evoked in Penelope’s signature ambient gothic dreamlands that are equal parts shoegaze pop and surrealist soundscapes.
