Dsum returns to Back Door Records with a record that dips into classic electro and Detroit influences vibes. This varied collection tips its hat in a few directions. Showing respect to underground roots across the board.

Each side of this record offers different but compatible visions, from the ethereal Electro of 313 Clones and the bite of D'voidofunk. To the dream House of Fantasy and depth of Love Machine. The journey the artist takes through different sounds is part of what makes this record so special.

From classic electro influences to lo-fi dub techno, the new Dsum's release is landing in a mystic zone, exploring breaks, reverse kicks, and low tempo rhythms.

The first track, "313 Clones" is a Detroit-influenced "trap" with deep melodies alongside those seventy's vocoder samples. On the other side, "Fantasy" is the producer's favorite, dub essential, profound, with a bass made from the reverse kick and a sequence going out of tune to land into that spooky vibe.

For the House side, "Love Machine" is the neutral rhythm and relaxing track of this EP, Funky and chill with a great bass line that gives you that head move. Also, in the end, a hypnotic "loop" tool for those creative DJs!

A defining time for many musicians pursuing the arts of exploring sonic palettes is the moment of learning a song, an instrument and recording it. The procedure of selection and layering of sounds. The idea of dissolving this mysticism and truly being in control of something. The realisation that there's a lot more enigma coinciding with simplicity in music that you may not have realised before and discovering new journeys from there on in. The knowledge of its technicality brought with a background in contemporary songwriting becomes a quest for sounds surrounded by layers of storytelling. To establish a sonic aesthetic that represents yourself and what you want to present to the listener.

The recording of Passerella took place at the end of the summer of 2022 over one week of isolation and songwriting in a house on the shoreside of the lake Lugano. Layered with references from a contemporary approach to 80s synth pop, post-punk and dark wave, with subconscious derivations of Canzone Italiana as a foundation for a musical piece derived from Infesta's childhood listening habits. Bare genuineness, emotional and aggressive at the right places, the way in which music captures the purity of intense feelings. Infesta’s work is presented in a raw quality which intimates the listener with an aspect of humanity grippingly relatable.

Cemented songs with a focussed vision, Infesta’s dark yet familiar world is one confused but shared among us all. The conceptuality of a traditional album dissolving into a musical diary. The music within this record is a rendering of the importance of having these songs compiled side-by-side as a way of storytelling. To keep the same picture of the exposure of a person through their music. Conflicting inner thoughts frolicking side by side. A gentle hand caresse gleaned by an author to its listener.

Lead track ‘Weltschmerz’ sounds like an instant Berghain classic; dark, massive, trippy, and with an emotional character all too rare within the genre. The kicks are banging, the verbed out percussion is fierce, and it all moves around a haunting melodic breakdown that artfully dances on the right side of ‘progressive.’ It’s a killer track that perfectly sets the tone for the whole record.

‘Damage Control’ is a straightforward flex-a-thon, a housier rhythm that struts along confidently. The technical term is ‘floor-filler.’ ‘Lonesome’ brings the emotion back, with it’s super-tense, unresolved melodies, this is perfect for all your mega-club yearning & gurning needs. ‘Relatives of None’ is the nastiest of the bunch, and probably the most at home on Turbo, built around a screechy synth hook. Finally, ’Weltschmerz (Melodic Theme)’ provides an epic ambient outro, crystallizing the emotional tones of the EP and establishing a sense of artistic vision that ascends well beyond the pedestrian.

Shift Work (@shiftworking) are an electronic duo who have previously released on JD Twitch’s Glasgow label Optimo Music. They debut on Houndstooth with ‘Document II’, an EP developed from live jams on outboard analogue gear. ‘Abandoned Hands’ is lean and raw, an angular bassline and indecipherable vox punctuating the relentless 4/4 kick drum and pattering percussion. ‘SBFM’ is fuller-bodied, with the modulating bassline taking centre stage, draped in loose synths and topped with a deadpan vocal refrain.

Shift Work invited remixes from their associates, and the results are impressive, with DVA Damas (@dvadamasdvadamas) dialling down the tempo and stripping back ‘Abandoned Hands’ further still, whilst Factory Floor (@factory-floor) return to remix duty on Houndstooth with a typically subtle yet infectious building take on 'SBFM'.

Nico Motte, the man behind the visual identity of Parisian imprint, Antinote, marks his label comeback with Life Goes On If You Are Lucky. Following on from last year's beautiful debut 12" on the aforesaid label, Nico's dialogue with his musical machines continue in the seven tracks of his new LP.

Touching on LGOIYAL's housier tip, "I.C.A" builds complexity through its layers of synth pads, synthesised woodwind, basslines and percussion – all incredibly melodious in nature, and orchestrated with ease by Nico. Behind the multiple structures hides the heart of the song which, after several listens, grows on you before you've even truly realised. Nico's multi-craft of composition, arrangement, conducting and production is plausible once experiencing the seven (not so much tracks but) instrumental suites in Life Goes On If You Are Lucky. An opus that experiments bravely with the sonic spectrum in its entirety, from live saxophone to vocals in the form of Syracuse's Isabelle, and explores human fragility in its fullest, frankest form.

Life Goes On If You Are Lucky comes out on 14 December via Antinote.

Nico Motte "I.C.A" - Boiler Room Debuts

For our final record of the year, we turn to Glasgow's man of the year - Denis Sulta.

Like a good chunk of the Numbers family, he has earnt his stripes working at the coalface of techno aka Rubadub. He has crafted two excellent twelves for our bare-chested cousins at Dixon Avenue Basement Jams and is beginning to carve himself out a reputation as a DJ of some repute, expertly blending in the bangers with Sulta-certified weirdness. Denis is part of a new wave of Glaswegian artists who are doing amazing things and whose music is continuously exciting us.

‘It’s Only Real’ created by Sulta during a burst of inspiration one Sunday, takes us back to a time when techno was intricately melodic but still kicked hard in the club. Made with only the purest of intentions and a dedication to the art of moving heads and feet.

The clouds were light and fluffy, they concealed all the chaos and pain which lurked on earth down below. In the morning glow the shape of each wispy bubble was unique and beautiful as they floated atop what was an endless floor of dense white. He'd always wondered whether he might make it to the pearly gates, would they let him in? Now as he held hands with an angel he wondered why he'd ever begun to worry or threat. He had lived a good life, down there amidst the normality of the city life. He'd never guessed that one day he might float away some place else, into the beyond. In heaven he was, in heaven we are. 

Vanessa Worm will release an album via the longstanding Glasgow based record label, Optimo Music, later this year. This is the first single taken from the forthcoming LP.

This EP is a post factum of the great Industrial music phase in the 1980, where there are so many
fragments of the genre itself. And Aditya manage to mutate those tracks into a new club territory,
tested before and a sure highlight for any adventurous DJ.
