Norway’s finest purveyors of off-kilter, crystalline pop, Soft as Snow aka Oda Egjar Starheim and Øystein Monsen, are back with a brand new release. The 4-track ‘Chrysalis’ EP is the duo’s second original release, following their 2014 debut - the ‘Glass Body’ EP, which was also issued as 'Glass Body Remixed', a striking collection of reworked versions by Lucy, Gabe Gurnsey of Factory Floor, Maria Minerva and Brian DeGraw of Gang Gang Dance.

Opening track ‘I Adore’ is characterized by abrasive synths and shimmering inflections, while ‘Fluid’ builds from glassy restraint to a synth freak-out. ‘Mouth’ is a menacing statement of intent, all tribal percussion and primal yelps, calling to mind the unsettling production of Mica Levi’s soundtrack for ‘Under The Skin’. The EP draws to a close with the energetic, skittering ‘Her Blood Is Gold’, with Oda’s strange, otherworldly vocal binding it all together.

The release was mixed in LA by Timothy Wiles, whose engineering credits as Q include Factory Floor and Liars, whilst his production career as Überzone stretches back to the USA’s mid-90s rave boom. The 12” is pressed to hot pink vinyl and housed in a high-gloss sleeve with artwork by Kytten Janae, in a limited run of 500 copies.

Norwegian duo Soft as Snow makes experimental pop for the interplanetary set, echoing the sounds of minimal wave and early Warp releases. Their approach to music making is hands-on; avoiding laptops in favour of analogue synths, drum machines and samplers, mixed with idiosyncratic vocals and heavily processed guitars. They’ll be releasing their debut EP, 'Glass Body', for Houndstooth on July 21st, 2014.
 
Soft as Snow is Oda Egjar Starheim and Øystein Monsen’s first electronic venture, yet their collaboration was initiated years ago through art related performances and projects  – including creating their own utopic art and music festival in the Swedish forest, and performing at events in cities such as London (where they are now based) and Oslo.

The duo has invited Julie Born Schwartz to design the cover art for their EP, which also features a remix by Asher Levitas of Old Apparatus, Saa and Penny. Meanwhile, their first upcoming video for the track “Halo Heart,” created by Michael Crowe from Overshare Records, Penny and Mysterious Letters, is currently on display in DZIALDOV Gallery in Berlin.

The title of the album is based on a feeling I believe all artists experience. Whenever I'm working on music (or anything for that matter) I'm always trying to chase an idea I have in my head and present it in reality where it can be observed, quantified and appreciated, only to realise that my idea or vision is too extreme or disproportionate to my skill set, leaving me constantly in a state of abandoning my art at a point where it can be classed as 'complete I guess' and settle for mediocrity.

TLDR: Art is never finished, only abandoned. We all settle for mediocrity.

Cissi Moon changed my life! It was in a now refurbished part of Stockholm in a futuristic cafe/club called Holger that i had my first encounter with loudly played club music. The night was called dB and we lined up with our fake IDs every Saturday to hear Cissi Moon spin Drum & Bass records and let the bass engulf our beings.

At the time the art of making electronic music was totally alien to me, I could not for the life of me work out how to ever make music that carried the same emotional and physical impact as I felt on that dance floor .
I have spent the last 17 years or so trying to get back to that state of being at one and completely lost with the music. 

This record concludes a trilogy of EPs by Peder Mannerfelt on his eponymously named label. What comes next is everything and beyond.
