Deep Wave (Houndstooth, 2018)

The Norwegian-born, Berlin-based duo Soft as Snow will release their debut album ‘Deep Wave’ on April 6th. It was created by Soft as Snow members Oda Egjar Starheim and Øystein Monsen, with additional mixing and production by WIFE of Tri Angle Records.

Their oblique leftfield pop recalls Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle, deep Detroit techno, 90s IDM, Fever Ray, cold wave and the ‘Mutazione’ compilations, but is simultaneously fresh, original and groundbreaking, crowned with Oda’s esoteric and otherworldly voice.

“We’ve been experimenting with arrangements and production. The sound is rawer, more experimental and noisy”, explain the duo. “What maybe differs most from the other releases is that we decided to keep a lot of recordings from the initial jams. Several of the tracks are more or less kept in the original form.”

When Moby released his 'Hotel' album on Mute in 2005, it was accompanied by limited edition disc 'Hotel: Ambient'. 

Long out of print, the American artist - who's covered everything from hardcore breakbeat to experimental house and techno in his two-decade career - is reissuing the record with a bunch of unreleased tracks.

As part of Swedish noir-pop trio @dnkl, RBMA '13 alum @andrelaos has been making some serious waves as of late. Even though we very much enjoy the group's icy, melancholy output, we were happy to hear about André's new solo record on @monologues.

"Tragic Tofu" is the EP's title track, and we're proud to host its premiere. A concentrated effort that revolves around a fluorescent synth line, "Tragic Tofu" is the kind of cut you'll want to serve up to a crowd just as it's settling into a rhythm.

Next up on Espai Music comes 'Collider', the new single from DJ/producer, Dimitri from Amsterdam.

With over 30 years of record spinning, it's tempting to use the term 'veteran' in the case of this firmly rooted craftsman. Releases on Carl Craig's Planet E and gigs at some of the world's finest nightspots are testament to the fact that this curator is still very much at the top of his game.

The original combines the rhythmic with the emotive. Landscapes of twisting textures, brooding melodics and gorgeous chord progressions provide an underbelly for a spiralling analog sequence which embarks upon a stunningly trippy journey of it's own.

Sigward takes on the first of three remixes, with all the character of the original soaked effortlessly into a deep, chugging slice of techno.

Pina adds a further variation, intrepreting the original in unique fashion. A suspense and unease prowls amongst the dubby bassline and broken beats.

Completing the package comes the remix of Claudio Mate. A straight-up slice Detroit-infused melodic techno, Claudio provides more nourishment for the peak-time dancefloors.

Throwing Snow presents ‘Xema’, the final instalment in a trio of EPs that pair his ear for melody with club-ready drive. “Built for the summer, yet seen through a wintery prism,” they have formed the recent backbone of his ever-changing live set. Its predecessors ‘Lumen’ and ‘Glower’ have been picked up by DJs from Gilles Peterson to Four Tet to Sasha, and ‘Xema’ is set to be the biggest hit of the trilogy to date.

‘blind’ is a reflection about human limitations. Interviewed about agnosticism, David Attenborough brilliantly stresses the point whether we’re missing senses to perceive and understand the world around us - what a pretension it would be! Built as a subtle transition from acoustic to electronic, the piece blends genres, deconstructs categories, pushes back boundaries alongside a spectrum reflecting human’s potential to self-transcendence. Might we be blind at night, at least we aren’t deaf.

'blind' est une réflexion sur les limitations humaines. Un jour interviewé à propos de l'agnosticisme, David Attenborough s'interrogeait à savoir si nous possédions tous les sens nécessaires pour percevoir et comprendre le monde qui nous entoure - quelle prétention ce serait d’y croire! Construite en subtile transition de l'acoustique vers l'électronique, la pièce métisse les genres, déconstruit les catégories, repousse les limites en proposant un spectre reflétant le potentiel humain à l'autotranscendance. this is one of the themes i have composed for " Roundtrip " , a film by  the Syrian director  Meyar Al-Roumi.
this piece was recorded between Beirut and Fraizer Park California .
I recorded Buzuk , guitalele , kalimba and melodica 
Miles Jay recorded Lyra , accordeon , contrebass and percussions.
This version is different from the one in the movie. I hope u ll have the chance to see it at the Dubai film festival , if it wins a prize it will hopefully be screened in some theatres around the world. ( finger crossed )
