With a remix and a compilation cameo already under his belt, Canadian figurehead Priori makes his Kalahari return for the debut proper. 3 squelchy incursions complete with a hefty remix from fellow Oyster Cult acolyte Sansibar.

Known for traversing breezy, horizontal zones, the NAFF co-founder sets downbeat and ambient concerns aside for the direct and propulsive. Expect insistent, urgent forays down the wormhole as nocturnal jaunts made of ritual and darkroom throb coalesce with meditative, essential rhythm.

This is fractal gear born from the the traditions of European, Japanese and American Mid-West techno; tunnelling and immersive, conjuring moments of ascension for the gathered masses.

Finishing on Sansibar’s meaty refit, the one-two punch of seismic kick and dry-as-bone snare propels Priori’s original in a whole new direction.

Prolific duo Pig & Dan land back on Cocoon Recordings, which is familiar territory having had their debut single released on Sven Väth's imprint in 2001. Here they deliver a pair of techno ballads in their 'Reset Your Bassline' EP, which features the driving, dreamy and emotive techno cut ‘Lost Another Angel’.

Dan describes the vision behind the melodic arrangement: “It’s all about hand played synth parts, twisted melodic riffs and a hypnotic yet groovy bassline.”

"This song is a reminder not to play around with people’s hearts. It is a song about finding yourself in a new romantic situation and, for the first time in your life, your partner is the one who is far more infatuated than you are. Ever sensitive to what it’s like to be on the other side of this, you try to handle it delicately, but you completely lack the experience or know-how to do so. Inevitably you do something to break their heart, and it is only then that you’re able to feel how deeply selfish you acted. The guilt of misuse can feel almost as bad as the heart break you’ve caused."

Buried under layers of blankets, attempting to sleep in -45 degree wind chill, TWINS’ Matt Weiner was shivering on the couch in mix-engineer Jeremiah Meece’s living room. He’d already named his record ‘New Cold Dream’ before traveling to Chicago on the coldest day since 1985 to mix down the recordings; the fact that the city was in the midst of a polar vortex when he arrived was just a bit of cosmic irony. Still, this frosty scene is a perfect microcosm for the album itself - New Cold Dream is, in his words, about “staying warm in a cold world.”

Though TWINS’ sound has always drawn on synth-pop, his second LP takes the ‘80s influence a step further, interpreting our current climate of fear and uncertainty as a direct result of the economic policies set into motion during the Reagan/Thatcher era. The conditions under which New Cold Dreamwas created serve as evidence that the New Gold Dream that Simple Minds were singing about in 1982 has coalesced into something much darker. In the 21st century, the idea of the “American Dream” has been replaced by a cold new frontier. If life in America is a new sort of Wild West, then Weiner is its gothic cowboy chronicler, staring into the vast expanse of rising inequality, social stratification and environmental collapse.

Still, NCD isn’t a pessimistic record - Weiner seeks to embrace the unforgiving nature of these realities. Balancing our optimism with cynicism, oscillating between hot and cold. This duality can be heard throughout the record - from the foreboding refrain of “Slow Decline” to the sublime choral tones of “Misuse.” Ominous, industrial beats offset dreamy synth melodies, while Weiner’s fervid vocals reconcile tensions throughout. New Cold Dream is a thoughtful yet heartfelt amalgamation of dark electro, synth pop, and industrial dance music. “Lie Awake,” an irresistibly classic dark-electro song underpinned by an infectious dance beat, embodies this balance perfectly. Past influences abound - from John Maus to Bauhaus, from Suicide to Depeche Mode - but this record lives distinctly in the present.

Hot vs. cold, fear vs. courage, light vs. dark. TWINS finds the similarities in what appear to be opposites, and invites us to do the same. “I want people to feel moved; both moved to get up and move and also moved in a deeper sense of connecting with ideas that may not have made sense before,” Weiner says of his project. It’s music for contemplating while dancing, for letting go while you hold on tight. As we grow tired of a world that deals in extremes, we wake up to a new cold dream.

Hard at work for over a decade now, EDND is one of those artists whose influence on her local scene rolls deep and yet feels subtle - she's been silently honing her craft surrounded by a healthy mix of VSTs, classic drum machines and second-hand synthesisers of all kinds in her home town of Portimão. She's also never stopped playing a part as an important cultural agitator in the south of Portugal and Lisbon alike, taking part in jam sessions or community-led parties in all sorts of DIY venues, as well as gracing established clubs and festivals with hers and her duo's Roundhouse Kick mesmerising live acts.

For her first solo EP 'Rupture of Plane', EDND finds a fitting home at Paraíso, where she explores the border between inventive experimentation and dancefloor effectiveness. The opener 'Quartz Composer' layers a bouncy bassline with mystery-drenched melodies and carefully sound designed percussive elements while the sparse vocal inspires a state of loving ecstasy. The infectious rawness of 'Field Effects' follows; its visceral, playful kickdrum pacing a dizzyingly trippy synth and an enticing suggestion of the rougher side of acid. 'While Sleeping Watch' ensues, bringing an even moodier, industrial-leaning piece of top-form EBM and techno. Paraíso regular Photonz steps in for a powerful rework of Quartz Composer, infusing it with a tough, whole new broken electro groove and an addictive synth re-design.

We welcome for our final release of 2019, Germany’s very own Max Hock aka Es.tereo. This, our third release on our ‘Earthbase’ series, sees Max arrive with an already solid pedigree of output via such labels such as the now defunct but seminal Hidden Hawaii imprint, as well as German modern dnb staples such as Absys Records and Urban Poetry. His perhaps most notable previous work is arguably  his ‘Theme’ project (via Samurai Music) which saw universal praise from the leftfield dnb scene and beyond , taking the landscape of dub techno atmospherics into a whole exciting new format of 170bpm-led excursions, when most people where hypnotised by minimalist sub-lead dread.

‘Ra’ Sees Max taking on a whole new level of sonic architecture, with dense and complex arrangements that almost lean into modern experimental breakbeats, remaining coherent enough for dancers at your local jungle rave. The levels are however undeniable, this is modern atmospheric jungle taken to a different level altogether. 

‘This EP was conceived whilst focusing on different energies and the translation of mixing those energies into soundscapes.  Ultima’s Breath was the beginning and is the centre of the EP. It´s the ultimate Unification/Union of those energies I feel that came out of that process. All the other pieces came with the flow subsequently and I decided to explore the different vibrations and facets which lead to this similar feeling. I feel the result is this balance of 4 expressions of this energy.’

The EP Sets the scene with ‘Ultima’s Breath’ a frantic but atmospheric breakbeat meditation that opens the doorway to new levels of breakbeat layering that might excite fans of skee mask, square pusher and remarc alike, moving swiftly into the heavy hitter ‘Temple Of Ra’, a half-stepping but still energetic sound-system staple, coming with a kind of tribal slow/fast style but taking the idea to a whole new level of intricacy, whilst maintaining a concrete backbeat that DJ’s can be sure to be drawing for years to come. the B-side opens with a complex tech-stepping dnb roller in the form of ‘Ancestral’ wherein The Alternating breaks provide grounding for yet another complex landscape of percussion and brush strokes of reverb and melody that orbit around the core gracefully. The EP closes with ‘Flying Disc’ - a Frantic medley of minimalist percussive motions that seem to levitate above a dominating saturated sub-bass line that will test any decent system to it’s limits.

‘RA’ is the ideal blend of dancefloor and headphones that we feel we have been honing with our output at Cosmic Bridge, and we are happy to be a part of what may be the evolution of a dnb artist about to potentially transcend the genre itself. 

This is put simply, fresh as fuck.
