East London's Simbad is a character who prefers to remain in the shadows.
Minds in the industry know him as one of the most gifted engineers out there and switched on lovers of bass from his many remixes and 2008's acclaimed LP 'Supersonic Revelation'.
Collaborator with Zed Bias, Phil Asher and Karizma, he's produced for Roots Manuva and a close affiliate of Gilles Peterson and his Brownswood label. Most recently he's remixed Deetron, Quantic and Cooly G and he's worked with Mala in Cuba. Chances are you've probably already got Simbad's gold-encrusted gems in your artillery and didn't even know it.
As a DJ, he's simply wicked. Embracing everything from classic rare groove, disco and soul to Y3K funk, footwork and world music, his selection hinges on stone cold quality above all else.
Simbad, we salute you! He's laid us down a superb mixtape chocked full of unreleased (*) good shit.

"Each and every fan of Ninja Tune‘s turntable tricknology, or Warp Records‘ leftfield dance leanings, should be familiar with the work of Dylan Richards, recently going under the moniker House of Black Lanterns. If not then perhaps you need reminding that his killer Way of The Ninja mix under his King Cannibal guise was probably one of the best mixes to come out of the Ninja stable.

The record was not only a real lesson in mixcraft. 250 tracks in 74 minutes is no mean feat, yet Richards managed it with ease, and the result is nothing short of monumental.

He’s managed it again with our GITmix, seguing 47 tracks into 45 minutes, so prepare to have your little sockies blown clean off your feet. The mix features a blend of styles, from techno, through electro with a quick stop in Baltimore for some bass-related fun.

Dylan also collaborated with Buddy Peace, as Zilla, on Warp Records, in order to curate their Watch and Repeat Play promo mix.

Of late, though, Dylan has been releasing tracks under his House of Black Lanterns name. The tracks he produces as HoBL are very much dub-infused techno beasts, growling and snarling at the listener as they breathe and emanate an organic energy. Check out his most recent offering, You Were Telling Me of Mountains, which you can purchase via his bandcamp page.

House Of Black Lanterns is an artist close to our heart; as part of the Houndstooth roster he's released a critically appreciated album Kill The Lights and further EPs on the label. Having seen acclaim as King Cannibal in the past with his bass weighted bashment influenced releases on Ninja Tune, with this project he presents a deeper side to his musicality that has certainly been turning heads recently. For the uninitiated, his sound draws on several influences, most prominently dub-infused techno, Dance Mania classics and modern gritty techno. 

Here he presents his high-octane sonic vision for us, taking us on a fast-paced journey through DJ Funk classics to Cajmere's seminal Percolator all the way to more recent tracks from the likes of Jimmy Edgar. With a very unique mixing style he keeps the energy level high, that will undoubtedly blow the cobwebs out of your home speakers. 

Catch him play alongside Robert Hood and Marcel Fengler in Room Two at the end of the month to celebrate EPM's 15th birthday. With an EP out on the label in late April for the music platform, he should feel right at home.

As a child of the 80s, Homemade Weapons (Andre Delgado) witnessed the birth and growth of many musical styles, and has always favored the extreme ends of the spectrum - from frighteningly heavy to delicately soft. Having fully internalized the musical ethos of his native Baltimore/DC, and his more recent backdrop of Seattle, WA, his music exhibits a combination of subtlety, power, and depth, rare in any genre, but much more so in the confines of Drum and Bass.
As of late, the right people are taking notice of his solo and collaborative efforts. His music is presently supported by Loxy, dBridge, Skeptical, Clarity, Hybris, The Upbeats, Ruffhouse, The Insiders, Quadrant, Bachelors Of Science and Sinistarr to name a few.
Plans for 2013 include a another trip overseas and North American dates in the Spring. Expect forthcoming releases on acclaimed labels such as Cylon, Architecture, 117 Records, Fokuz, Broken Audio, and more to be announced.

Inspired by catching a special late nineties set by Dillinja a number of years ago, where he played dipping in and out of different styles, together with my continued love of old One In The Jungle rips, this is the first in a new series journalling my favourite drum & bass tracks, across all shades and sounds of the genre, including but also beyond the usual big tracks that come up in most history style mixes... House of Black Lanterns is the latest artistic guise of Dylan Richards (formerly known as King Cannibal when working on Ninja Tune and Zilla on Warp Records).

Championed by the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs, hand-picked by Björk to work on her recent ‘Biophilia’ project, selected by Liam Howlett to remix the Prodigy, invited to compile retrospectives of the Warp and Ninja Tune catalogues as Zilla and King Cannibal respectively and DJ Mag Best of British 'Best Mix CD' award nominee, Richards is no stranger to critical recognition when it comes to twisted, layered soundscapes.

House of Black Lanterns delivers a defined change in vision and style with the material already receiving widespread support. The debut album 'Kill The Lights' on Fabric's imprint 'Houndstooth' retains the earlier influence of DJ Krust’s sprawling drum & bass soundscapes, House of Black Lanterns sees Richards develop his sound to incorporate the dub-inflected techno textures of Rhythm & Sound whilst nodding to the catchy, yet bleak floorfillers of Trax, all inspired by the modern noir visual style of Michael Mann.

In between sets at both Berghain and Panorama Bar, The Roundhouse, Boileroom, Fabric and Melkweg, remixes have been traded with Breakage, Dave Clarke & Mr Jones's _Unsubscribe_ project, followed by a  EP on Hypercolour and a release for Doc Scott's 31 Records.
