The Brooklyn Gypsies are a group of NYC based musicians/ producers whose creative influences draw from the constant shifting of an ever changing urban sociopolitical landscape while retaining their unique cultural backgrounds through what has come to be recognized as “Gypsy” music.

Originating from Spain, Japan, Russia, Italy & U.S.A. BK Gypsies truly represents Brooklyn’s diverse ethnic heritage and style. The gypsies came to be in 2012 within Williamsburg Brooklyn’s Studio BPM music scene. Members include: Carmen Estevez, Takuya Nakamura, Tina Kristina, Brandon Lewis, Troy "Mobius" Simms & Zeb "The Spy From Cairo". After a number of collaborative projects between the artist were explored the opportunity to form a band that incorporated elements from each project arose. The groups sound is an infusion of Mediterranean, North African, Arabic Themes with Electronic, Dancehall and Dub Reggae. The term "Gypsy" was incorporated into the band name representing the nomadic spirit & way of life within this musical journey.

You might be familiar with Houston guitarist Tom Triplett from such groups including but not limited to The Real Energy, No Talk, Hammatsu Tom & the Kroger Sushi River Band and the Homopolice.  In more recent times, perhaps you've stood, jaw agape, stunned by Tom's performances and recordings with OBN III's or BLAXXX.  Now, in the summer of 2015, Tom emerges from the shadows of those acclaimed projects, preparing to cast a huge shadow on HIS NEXT BAND. 

Tom is accompanied by drummer Josh Wolf (Secret Prostitutes, Sick Abuse, Crime Wave, The Real Energy, Bloody Hammer, Lysol S.S. and many, many more) and bassist Manie Chen (Titan Blood)

Muxama is the 34th reference of three:four’s catalog. It has been obvious that the symbolic number should be honoured by an artist that we admire. Norberto Lobo is the one. 
With Fornalha, his first record on three:four released two years ago, Norberto Lobo began to move from a fingerpicking into a more personal and adventurous playing. Muxama is the following step. The reference to americana music are less and less obvious. His technique skills are not only in his hands but primarily in his feet. Adding live effects to his guitar playing, Norberto Lobo distorts the time and space to bring music in a new dimension. Modulating volume, intensity, phase and pitch he enters in a nonlinear, free interpretation of his pieces. All classical bearings fall apart; Norberto Lobo leads you to a new way to grasp his music. In “La claire fontaine” the french writer David Bosc says about Gustave Courbet “No way is the way of freedom. People, when they are free, go through all paths”. So does Norberto Lobo.

Lisa/Liza is the lo-fi, psych-folk recording project of Maine-based guitarist, singer and songwriter Liza Victoria. Deserts of Youth is her debut LP, after numerous limited edition cassette and CDr releases. Deserts of Youth is an intimate collection of seven original songs, recorded at home by Victoria, using just her voice and her acoustic guitar.

Liza explains:
"Deserts of Youth is an album about the parts of our past that remain within us, and visiting these landscapes with recognition of ourselves instead of a meditation on what has been lost, or is no longer a resource or a path we can use. It is about meeting the past and facing it with a sense of ownership instead of abandon; the idea that one can see a desert as a place of desolation or a place of needed reflection, full of life, and strength."

In an email to Robert on February 3rd 2016: 

Dear Robert.

There’s a lot I’d love to tell you about this music.

The inspiration really came when I decided to learn to play John Cage’s In A Landscape on the piano . . . I listened to a recording I had over and over again, five seconds or so at a time, picking out every single note. Then cross referencing what I’d learned with other versions of the piece as well as the original score. The feeling of playing this piece really brought me close to the piano again, and brought new life to my own piano songs.

Beyond Cage’s music, his life and practice have interested me more and more, after having read about his love for foraging wild foods and using chance operations to compose music, in a sense taking his ‘self’ out of the music. I love his so-called ‘mesostics’ and began to write several poems using that method, around this phrase:

When it came time to record in the studio, I rolled two dice to decide how many poems to read. I rolled 5. Then I assigned a number to each poem and rolled the dice to see which five poems would be read and in which order. That’s the first track Partners, which is also the last word of the last poem I selected through this chance-based process. Track two is my version of In A Landscape. I love playing that piece so much. Carried  is a piece I wrote in Berlin which I’ve played live from time to time. There was a soft vocal loop playing out through an amplifier in the room while I played the piano.

Under The Bridge is my first ever chance-based composition, written by assigning different numbers to different notes and then rolling dice to decide in which order to play those notes. Conspiraling is another piece I’ve been playing for a while. Actually a version of this was recorded in the session that became ‘How They Are’, but it didn’t quite feel right. I like to pretend my voice is like a synthesizer in this song. Then there’s Up Niek Mountain which is a piece I finished composing while in residence at a farm in the Netherlands back in 2010, and is named after one of the family farmers there, Niek, who passed away shorty after I was there. We miss you Niek. The last song is a cover of Brigid’s Sometimes. Brigid to whom I dedicate this recording.

And then there’s Tucker, Mr. Martine, who agreed to record this album without me ever hearing the mixes. We talked about all the sounds and he set up several devices with which to manipulate the sound live, as it was being recorded and mixed down to tape. Francesco also agreed to master the record without me hearing it. I like to imagine maybe one day, five or ten years from now, I’ll walk into a café or roadside diner and hear it for the first time, playing as background music while people eat.

OK surely that’s enough for now! Sorry for blabbing, Robert. Your support has really meant a lot to me. I’ve loved having you in mind while working on this project, knowing it could very well have a home on your sweeeeeet label. Hope all is well.

From the sadly sanitized bowels of Berlin, PUFF comes correct to the Slovenly / Mondo Mongo roster once again with the madcap “Living In The Partyzone” LP. These mysterious dumpster dwellers deliver 10 tracks of electro-analog chaos, heavy on the attack and decayed beyond recognition. Housed in despicable cover art that we fully endorse, PUFF’s beatification of German forefathers THE MONKS with a heavy nod to DEVO creeps into your psyche with helium-headed punk goop. PUFF has been known to cause erectile dysfunction and red eye with half broken organs and barely repaired synths, pairing with misappropriated guitars to create an animated racket that is intended to destroy the party (people). Absurdist lyrics pilfered from the journal of taxi driver turned comedian Travis Bickle weave around John Carpenter samples and itchy melodies to construct music that’s grown like mold from an over fermented pair of minds, transforming “garage music" into music from a dilapidated garage containing a broken dishwasher and a forgotten collection of Joe Meek records. Buzzing synth spars with surf guitar twang on "Psychological Survival", one of only a handful of tracks sung in English, with the rest mouthed in the mother tongue. Animatronic frivolity reigns supreme here, with sounds fit for a post-apocalyptic arcade game, and lyrical outrageousness that never wavers regardless of their chosen language.

Welcome to the rock’n’roll manifestation of Eddie Murphy’s 1987 “Raw” concert. If you haven’t seen it or listened to it lately, it’s a remarkable, rapid-fire onslaught of hilarity that rages with new ideas and jokes that you hadn’t heard before at every turn, and Eddie never misses a beat. Enter “Leisure Opportunity” by PROTO IDIOT - né Andrew Anderson, also of Manchester’s THE HIPSHAKES, and his pals Callum Darley (drums) and Michael Seal (bass). “If you like that, then you’ll love this” is the maniacal chant on “I’m An Artist.” Hear it enough and you’ll believe it! The Eddie Murphy parallels shouldn’t be too much of a stretch, but if it seems a bit obtuse, think Ray Davies with Attention Deficit Disorder. Better? Either way, “Leisure Opportunity” is no comedy album, per se, but it’s riddled with humor on both the musical and lyrical fronts. Try not to guffaw at a line that tells you what you’re listening to: “DRUMS! BASS! VOCALS! GUITAR!” on “Yes Yes Yes Yes,” but the unintentional appropriation of Gloria Estefan’s “Turn The Beat Around” chord progression on “Angry Vision” deserves a “HEE-HAW!” at the very least, to say nothing of Anderson’s first person narrative on the “Theme” when he declares “I can’t even play guitar.” Spoiler: he can indeed play guitar, and the orchestra is also proficient on DRUMS! BASS! VOCALS! (debatable) respectively, with composition / production duties that can cream virtually anyone making kid’s music today.
