Canny Unco Swither - Ross H Frew (The NewBridge Project x Slack's 27-29/10/21)

David Foggo and Helen Shaddock work collaboratively as marginendeavour to explore our affinities with text and design. 

The Back And Forth is a reflection on our collaborative process and explores the potential of the spoken word; emphasising the rhythmic, layered and repetitive qualities within the narrative.

It was created for Group Show2, an art podcast series curated by Caitlin Merrett King covering topics like work, collaboration and criticism.

The Back And Forth

Mostly consisting of hydrophone recordings made at Fontburn Reservoire in Northumberland, this piece was made to accompany an exhibition of Louise Plant's stone sculptures (see image) based upon the eddies and vortices made in water by rowing. I was struck by the bright, almost glassy quality of the hydrophone recordings, and so have also done some convolution filtering with samples of crystal wineglasses. The piece is quiet and contemplative, playing with the idea that elements can transform into one another. Just as Louise has transformed forms observed in water into stone, I've tried to find a solid resonance to the sound of water. Louise's exhibition runs 224th-26th August, then again 31st Aug to 1st Sept at Cheeseburn Grange Sculpture Gardens, near Stamfordham, Northumberland.

I am a multidisciplinary artist based in Newcastle working with installation, performance, sound, video, writing & sculpture. My work addresses the complex struggle to achieve equilibrium & balance in society today. It is rooted in contemporary experience in both an emotional (feelings & thoughts) and physical (materials & situations) sense. Language, in all its forms, is central to my current practice & my research examines how it can immerse an audience in multi-layered psychological & physical situations.
