This track is entitled XIX which is the number 19 in Roman numerals. So named because it is based on a pulsing rhythm of 19 quavers (7/8, 5/8, 7/8). The angular and uncomfortable sense that this delivers is relieved by the more melodic middle section in a comparatively relaxed and comfortable 5/4.

I originally intended to have 19 instruments too but sadly this was composed in response to Covid 19 and recorded during lockdown and it just wasn't possible to get hold of the instruments to make this possible so it is scored for 13 brass in the end: piccolo trumpet, Eb trumpet, 4 Bb trumpets, flugelhorn, tenor horn, baritone, 2 euphoniums and 2 tubas. 

I played trumpet, piccolo trumpet, flugelhorn, tenor horn, baritone, euphonium and tuba on this recording, Carol Jarvis played trombone and tuba and Sam Ewens also played trumpets and tenor horn.
