If we had to highlight one of Roberto Auser's qualities, it would surely be his great virtue for working in different fields of sound and ensuring that all his music has a homogeneous sense, that he knows how to make you enjoy whatever style he uses. Throughout his career we have seen that he handles perfectly with any genre, from ambient to experimental or even jazz, but also with musical trends such as techno or house, which a priori can be more conventional but, if it passes through his hands, the elemental nature of these styles takes a different direction.

Second Sun is the album that inaugurates the new series of releases that the Hungarian label Dalmata Daniel dedicates to the full-lenght format. For this, the Rotterdam producer expands his range of sounds with 10 tracks that, although they show certain properties that we can perfectly associate with him, also add less usual components. The result is an extraordinary album with an organic sound that combines shades of industrial, EBM and electro, with percussive elements and old-school bass lines but with a modern and fresh character. 

Manifold, the track we present to you exclusively, is the last cut of Second Sun, and as such, it acts as an outro, detaching itself from the energy of the album, adopting a condition of degraded atmosphere.

In 1993 he founded his very own Plasmek label.

Lost Soul Enterprises mastermind and crucial figure in the New York City dance music scene, holding residencies at Good Room, H0L0, and The Lot Radio; the Brooklyn-based producer and DJ Richard Gamble cut his teeth running the DIY space Odessa, in Memphis, which laid the foundation for his unique stroke.
Gamble hails from Memphis where he grew up making lo-fi rap beats, seeing post-punk electronic bands, synth-laced garage rock and experiencing the wild disco and soul of Hollywood Raiford's Disco. While the German producer Martin Matiske averages a new release under his given name every few years, there was a long stretch of time in which sightings of his Blackploid alias were much more rare. After dropping an EP for Frustrated Funk in 2006, fans found further material hard to come by over the next decade or so. However, Matiske has reinvigorated Blackploid in recent times, with the project making a few compilation appearances and dropping a couple of EPs across 2020.

That run now culminates in Cosmic Traveler, a four-track affair which marks Matiske’s debut appearance on Sheffield’s Central Processing Unit. Given the long wait, it’s great just to see Blackploid back among the fray once again. But for the project’s CPU curtain-raiser to be an EP of such high-quality techno jams? Now that really is spoiling us.

Cosmic Traveler’s title nods towards the sort of stargazing aesthetics one finds in classic Detroit techno. However, while there are undoubtedly ties to the Motor City in this music, the record ultimately steers less towards spacious atmospherics and more towards the taut, lean machine-funk of seminal practitioners like Dopplereffekt.

Matiske sets his stall out from the off. Opener ‘Electric Engine’ begins with a run of stiff-necked 808 kicks before hissing hi-hats, a grizzly bassline and all manner of futuristic sounds enter to warp the tune into hyperspace. Following cut ‘Night Drive’ repeats the trick of ‘Electric Engine’ but adds a pleasingly dinky synth lead in order to nudge itself slightly towards bleep-techno territory.

The two cuts on Cosmic Traveler’s B-side are pure late-night goodness, a pair of mid-set heaters primed for dark basements. ‘Pleasure Activism’ delivers on the promise of its title and then some, pushing the Kraftwerk template to extremes by bringing a load of gnarly synth lines into play over a wobbling acidic chug. Finally, EP closer ‘The Race’ is reminiscent of both the twisted machine-funk of Gerald Donald’s Japanese Telecom project and the playful modern evolutions of artists like fellow CPU high-flyer Jensen Interceptor.

The resurgence of Martin Matiske’s Blackploid project continues with Cosmic Traveller, an EP of timeless electro-funk and techno.

Auser has been into cinematic (or b-videomatic) electro for more than a decade now, with releases on Viewlexx, Pinkman, Gooiland Electro/Enfant Terrible and more, ranging from atmospheric and hypnotic to tight and grim, but always loaded with a vision of a storyteller. In a Dutch way, for sure. Though Second Sun is, again, an audiovisual trip, that's not the primary concept here – it's probably the purest album-like experience of Robert Auser so far, presenting most of his characteristics and sounds, and also new elements, still, all are coherent and organic parts of Auser's projective language of electronics."
